Is panelling nice or just “Chavvy”?

Just read a post online where someone said panelling is “chavvy”! I’m a little upset as I was planning to panel my hallway.

It’s a new build but I just feel the hallway needs something. Hallway is quite large. What do others think? Please be honest

It is chavvy and it will date like feature walls.

BatchCookBabe · 19/10/2025 14:26

I don't think it's ch@vvy (I hate that word!) But I don't much like it. Not modern panelling. Old houses with proper wood panelling is fine, but modern panelling I don't care for, especially on the whole wall. I think it looks a bit shit. Sorry @Diy322 I don't mean to be rude, it's JMO. If you like it, go for it! Maybe the bottom third of the wall? I think that will look better.

AbsentosaurusRex · 19/10/2025 14:26

Original panelling nice. New mdf panelling looks ok for a while. Will soon be an avocado bathroom.

UnhappyHobbit · 19/10/2025 14:28

No it’s not chavvy. It’s a traditional style which is now popular.

I dont know why people have to demonise past trends. Will it last forever, no. But that doesn’t mean it can’t be appreciated now.

Climbingrosexx · 19/10/2025 14:29

Not sure I would use the word chavvy but like anything which is very fashionable now it will date and become a buggar to fix.I dont know what your hall looks like but is it not possible to use 2 different colours or a mixture of wall paper and paint that compliment eachother? Not sure if I have explained myself very well there.

DiscoBob · 19/10/2025 14:30

I don't see the point in it tbh. Not chavvy per se though. Just find some nice artwork and frames and hang pictures.

Carandache18 · 19/10/2025 14:30

Everywhere was new build once upon a time. You do whatever makes your house feel like home. There's no such thing as chavvy anyway.

MelonElla · 19/10/2025 13:04

I wouldn't say it's chavvy but it is very popular and will probably date quickly.

Hasn't dated in 800 years. I think not.

nosleepforme · 19/10/2025 14:32

I like it!

@Naws come on! Of course I don’t want something in my home which is co dusted chavvy! I don’t know that’s why I’m asking! It’s something that will cost a lot of money for need to do my research,

A dado rail does not partition a wall into halves but more like a third and two-thirds. It does not belong in a new-build house. Can’t you just paint it a colour you like and then use pictures, a console table, a rug, etc?

Zebedee999 · 19/10/2025 14:34

Diy322 · 19/10/2025 13:10

What would you do to a hall way to make it look less boring and flat?

Could you put a dado rail in and have dark colour below and lighter above etc? Or pannelled style paper below and plain above?

MyCatPrefersPeaches · 19/10/2025 14:35

If you’ve got that width in your hall, I would be looking at a mixture of furniture and wall art, to be honest. A nice table to drop keys on. A unit to store mitts/gloves, etc. Somewhere to sit down and take shoes off, and to store them. Of course, you may have these already!

Shelves and plants would be nice. A big mirror to reflect the light around.

If panelling would make you happy, do it. But I think there are lots of other good ideas to make good use of the space which would be easier to change cheaply and quickly if you changed your mind.

Fedupworking2 · 19/10/2025 14:36

‘I’m a little upset’ - get a grip, OP. Pathetic!

Cappuccino5 · 19/10/2025 14:36

Chavvy in a new build. If it’s in a grand old house that has had panelling for years then it’s quite charming.

Fabulously · 19/10/2025 14:38

To be honest I don’t think I understand what “chavvy” means anymore, can someone explain?

I’m in my 20s and I guess when I think of chavs, I have a specific image of roadmen or women that dress/act a certain way. I don’t think I’ve really heard the term used much in recent years so I’m going off when I was a teenager.

However it seems like on this thread, chavvy just means things that are modern or have become trendy on social media? Or things that young people generally like? Cause I don’t really think traditional chavs are buying houses let alone renovating them.

bombastix · 19/10/2025 14:38

Naff. Really naff thing to do to your house.

FourIsNewSix · 19/10/2025 14:39

I agree with the floppybit.

I'd do with just a two colours paint in some kind of horizontal split, the lighter colour for the top part and ceiling and darker for lower part, without the actual dado rail.

The split can be horizontal on most of the walls, follow the stairs up on the right wall and maybe use some very simple geometry - V shape or some inversion in the middle of the left wall.

As you've already realised, it would mean just painting the second colour for now, so quite budget friendly.
And if you don't like it enough, you can add fake pieces/rail/wallpapers/panels later, when you'll have a better grasp of what works for that space.

Hang some art and a big mirror?

BatchCookBabe · 19/10/2025 14:39

Following up to my post, proper traditional oak panelling is fine (like the first 3 pics,) but the panelling in the second 2 (which is much more likely what the OP means,) doesn't look great ... (JMO.)

Re; the comment that panelling has been around for 800 years, yeah maybe, but the way it's done now is nothing like how it used to be. It's much cheaper, and quite honestly, usually looks a bit naff. (And most people these days will paint it in grey, blue, black, or dark navy!) 😬

We used to live in an old house that already had wood panelling , that was lovely .
I am in a new build now which was feeling bland ..we recently decorated and chose a few colours carefully , added more pictures on the walls , I also want to get a nice rug for the hallway.
Some neighbours homes are a bit “ greige “ for my liking but they do look calm , uncluttered and tidy .
I think panelling in a brand new home can look a bit out of place but not necessarily “ chavvy “ .
i think you could choose colours to make the home feel less bland to you ?
decorative items too

converseandjeans · 19/10/2025 14:44

It looks ok in period homes but in a new build it’s a bit like having a giant TV in a media wall. I think you can add interest with big mirror, some nice prints & perhaps a radiator shelf with plants on it. However it’s up to you & I think if you like the look of it then go for it. It would I think be expensive to remove if you change your mind.

Irritatedandsad · 19/10/2025 14:45

Actually ai know someone that used a panel look wallpapaer in their new build and it looked really nice.

MagentaRocks · 19/10/2025 14:46

If you like it then do it. It really doesn’t matter what other people think.

I have grey and white walls, furniture etc in my house. It’s a great base for changing colours with accessories. Obviously on here grey and white is the worst thing you can have but at the moment I have teal to brighten it up. If I change colour again it isn’t such a big task.

I'm not sure how you can get through life if an opinion from an internet stranger is getting inside your head.

How does that work?

What if you decorate and then see a different comment from a different stranger saying they don't like that sort of thing?

The only opinions that should matter are those belonging to the homeowner.

This absolutely. Who gives a flying fuck what other people think, its YOUR home!
