To have not known marital rape was legal in the UK until 1991

I was watching a video about history earlier and it mentioned marital rape in the UK and 1991. I couldn't believe it so I've just googled to check. And it's true

1991.... I was born in 1991!

I don't have any memory at all of this date being taught in schools. I was under the impression it was abolished in the 1940's 🤦‍♀️

You can't really be unreasonable for not knowing something.

But yes, I remember it being on the news/in the papers at the time.

FuzzyPuffling · 19/10/2025 12:26

Yeah, well I knew about it since I was a victim ten years earlier. But if course, it wasn't a crime, so I couldn't be a victim, could I.

I actually thought it was only about 20 years ago it was actually outlawed. I think in many countries it's still legal. Disgusting.

Chasingsquirrels · 19/10/2025 12:33

It was the year you were born, so obviously you wouldn't remember it.
It would then be over a decade (more likely 2 decades) until it would be something that might impinge on your awareness, by which time it would be accepted law of the period and so the history of it wouldn't be as relevant.

I certainly wouldn't expect it to be something taught generally in schools.

It took another 2 years for it to be a crime in northern Ireland.

TiredOldLady · 19/10/2025 12:40

Just for the record, in Scotland it was 1982. Doesn’t mean it made much of a difference unless there was also extreme physical violence.

Wishitsnows · 19/10/2025 12:57

I bet there is still not many convictions for it.
