Viewer stole from my house?

Calcaata · 18/10/2025 20:29

I have a Diptique candle, 3 wick and cost £180. I’ve had two house viewings today, not done by myself but by the estate agent. I’ve come home and it’s missing.

Aibu to expect the estate agent to reimburse me?? I won’t be able to contact them now until Monday.

Fuck me, people are paying £180 for candles? How the other half live...

That was my first thought. Although theft is inexcusable.

We had this as well, but it was a vase, luckily it was a flat we were selling so we could see the estate agent on cctv leaving with a fully intact vase, so they couldn’t pretend they had broken it.

The agent took it?! That's terrible!

Ironfloor269 · 19/10/2025 05:29

I read the title as ‘viewer stole my house’ 😀

Getamoveon2024 · 19/10/2025 05:29

FFS. Why on earth are people twatting on about the price of a candle? Is it really a revelation that a) people like different things to you and b) they can spend their money however they want? No law against either. There is however a law against bloody theft!
This is awful op, I am assuming you don’t have cameras? I would definitely report it to the EA. I told my EA when one particularly disgusting viewer left a giant unflushed shite in my en-suite! People can be vile.

Why would I have to justify anything I buy for myself by giving to charity? How about I’m not in debt, pay my bills, have savings and can do whatever I want with my money?

And for what it’s worth, I volunteer 3 hours a week online teaching adults to read, I have three direct debits set up to charities. Every morning I’m in the office I buy the same homeless man a coffee, I know his name and we talk as I want him to know he’s seen. I used to take the elderly woman that lived across the road from me food shopping every week and would have a tea with her on my lunch break until she died in March.

None of this makes me an angel or even a good person. But apparently I have to justify how I use my disposable income.

you don’t have to defend it.

It is quite tedious to see the predictable and thick comments about the cost of the candle here. That is not the point of the thread at all.

I’m shocked that people have stuff stolen on viewings. I never knew this happened. Appalling.

Kimura · 19/10/2025 05:40

spoonbillstretford · 19/10/2025 03:02

In absolute terms they donate more. But less well off people actually donate a higher proportion of their income so they are more generous.

I'm aware. As for that making them 'more generous', that's very much a matter of opinion.

LittleMoreLegAction · 19/10/2025 05:55

The focus on the candle cost is so stupid. I have never had a candle close to this price range but I can understand the appeal. A diptique candle looks nice in itself so it’s a beautiful ornament. I imagine it will give many hours of pleasure by burning a nice scent chosen by the OP.

Many things cost money that I would not pay for. I don’t drink alcohol. I see cocktails costing over £10 each, and it seems so expensive to me. But people enjoy them and that’s fine. A few nights out could easily cost £180 if somebody is drinking. I bet the OP gets more hours of pleasure from the candle.

People are so silly by getting so worked up about the cost of a candle. This thread is about the theft of an object of whatever cost from somebody’s house. Yet bitter and jealous people are getting oh so exercised about the cost of the candle. It’s pathetic. And boring.

Bluecrystal2 · 19/10/2025 06:40

I doubt that it's the first time they've stolen something in that way. Report it: EA might be able to join the dots, or at least note it in case it happens again. Could have been the EA, as I've heard stories about them before.

It's a good warning for us all not to trust.

Pricelessadvice · 19/10/2025 06:43

Does it matter how much OP paid for a candle?
Someone stole it from her house, that’s the issue here.

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 19/10/2025 06:55

The judgement is WILD on this thread (shock 🙄). There is at least one poster judging the op that has been on a perfume thread recently and their perfume of choice is the same price as the candle so it’s baffling why they think it’s horrifying to spend that on a candle.

And why should the OP buy cheap candles? Why shouldn’t she buy the one she wants? Why is the judgment not that some scummy fucker has stolen an item that doesn’t belong to them?!

That's not really the point is it..

Kulwinder54 · 19/10/2025 07:06

You must have the full names of the viewers via the agent. Send an email to agent saying all names will be reported to police by a certain date if it is not returned to you.

thepariscrimefiles · 19/10/2025 07:13

Emonade · 18/10/2025 22:41

It is a waste and I don’t know how people can live with themselves unless I am being totally unreasonable and they are also giving significant amounts to charity

OP has confirmed that does give significant amounts to charity and she also volunteers. I hope you donate the majority of your salary to charity and just live on the minimum wage.

It sounds as though you think that it serves OP right to have someone steal one of her possessions and that you are on the side of the thief?

SparklyGlitterballs · 19/10/2025 07:15

MrsSkylerWhite · 19/10/2025 00:23

180 quid for a candle? Why?

Some people burn through the equivalent value on a dozen packets of ciggies and probably no one would comment on that. At least the candle would smell better and not harm your health.

PortSalutSherryHello · 19/10/2025 07:17

God how predictable from those desperate to show they had no idea you could pay that for a candle and to think they have some right to berate others for what they do with their money. Where people get off is beyond me.

I dont ageee with the above...

I'd report to the police and get a crime number, I'd concurrently phone or go into branch and advise the EA that one of the 2 viewers has stolen from you and that the police have been contacted (crime number pending).
They should make all EAs aware so other sellers aren't also victims of theft.
Separately id say something like
"I am angry and disappointed. I entrusted my property to X Estate Agents and expected the EAs to do their job and supervise viewers.
In my view you are clearly in breech so there's two choices;either agree to release us from the contract so we can sell with your competitor or you can assure me this wont happen again and agree to deduct the equivalent £180 value from final selling fee.
How would you like to proceed?"

Then be very silent.

Edit: I didnt mean to quote myself and cant remove it 🤦‍♀️ 🤦‍♀️ 🤦‍♀️

@Calcaata
I realise its a tangent... but instead of winding yourself up responding to goady antagonists with chips on their shoulder who want to berate your for owning something not 100% practical (like almost every other human on the planet)...
maybe bother engaging with (and / or thanking?) the posters who took time to directly respond to your OP and actually provide useful advice.

My reply on page 1 had (IMO 🤣) great advice (30 other users also think so) and hasn't had so much as a thank you click <mild flounce>

I'm being tongue in cheek but I'm amazed / mildly annoyed you are take the time to do the former but not the later as...
A. It won't make you feel better after this honestly quite horrible incident
B. It's mildly rude to ask for help and not acknowledge when its given.

TorroFerney · 19/10/2025 07:29

Emonade · 18/10/2025 22:29

Maybe don’t waste so much money on a candle

Is this an insight into the mind of someone who steals? Stupid op bought something expensive so what can you expect.

TorroFerney · 19/10/2025 07:30

PickleSarnie · 18/10/2025 23:28

Ffs. The fact that OP chose to spend her own money on a £180 candle is not the point here. People are allowed to spend their own money on whatever they want. Apart from heroin and flick knives.

The issue is someone stole it.

Indeed, emotional intelligence on here declines by the day I swear.

Twatting on 😂

MrsSkylerWhite · 19/10/2025 00:28

It’s not a stupid question. No candle is worth that. Anyone who thinks it is is daft. No need to read the whole thread.

You should let the brand know, they’d be desperate for your luxury candle market insights.

Empress13 · 19/10/2025 07:35

Good luck with that one , you can try but I’m doubtful without proof they will reimburse you. That’s the risk you take having agents showing strangers who they very often let wander around the house on their own whilst they stay downstairs

Dollymylove · 19/10/2025 07:36

I think its unreasonable to pay 180 quid for a candle 😉

It's a good warning for us all not to trust.

In the back garden of our last house there was a beautiful peach tree in full fruit at the time we were selling. The EA showed viewers round one afternoon and after they had gone, the security camera at the back of the house showed her taking a cutting from the tree and then filling a big carrier bag with peaches before she left.

My DH sent the footage to the EA from his phone and asked if they intended to deduct the cost of them from our bill. We got a very red faced apology from the manager, who assigned us to a different member of the sales staff, and we did our own viewings from that point on !!

kfarm · 19/10/2025 07:39

I am sorry for your loss. Our Estate agents said they would rather the house was empty of people when doing viewings so we could not be asked questions and we agreed only to come home and find all the tiny items had been stolen from my daughter's playmobil hospital. I reported it immediately I realised and the estate agent did pay up and claimed she knew nothing about it and it had never happened before but did admit that the viewer had 2 kids she had left in my daughter's room playing!
