Disagreements over what temperature to have heating set to.

Partner and I rarely disagree on much, but he’s getting strangely wound up over the temperature of the house.

For context, I rarely have heating on until the winter months, but I do like it on when people are bathing/showering so you come out to a nice warm towel and aren’t freezing in the bathroom.

I only have the thermostat set to 18 degrees so I don’t feel it’s overly warm, but he’s walking round trying to throw the windows open whereas DD and I are shivering and chucking on layers. He’s the type of person who would permanently sleep with a fan, and we do have a summer duvet on all year round to help with him over heating in the night and I just whack extra blankets on me. Every window in the house is also always slightly cracked open because we like the fresh air.

How do I resolve this? What’s the happy medium? And for interest - do you think 18 degrees is too warm inside?

I have not turned the heating on yet but I just said to DH I think it will need to go on next week. I have been overpaying through the summer to build up winter fund.

thisishowloween · 18/10/2025 19:12

Between 17-18 is perfect for me - any hotter and I get a headache, any colder and I'm shivering.

I’m trying not to come across as goady, but probably failing, I appreciate your answers.

im just surprised your house is only 14 degrees currently.

I also have no heating on and always have bedroom windows open and have a fan on all year round. Love a cold bedroom.

my house is around 18.5 degrees currently and if I weren’t going out I’d light the fire, as I love a fire but I wouldn’t have the heating on yet.

Same here. There was a similar thread this morning where someone reckoned their house was 13 degrees. They must be living in a paper thin house if it isn’t retaining any heat at all. 18-19 degrees is average in my house in the rooms that don’t have open windows.

The competitive underheaters are out in force.

18 is a good compromise for normal people. Generally speaking it's easier to warm up (layers) than cool down, so I think the cold blooded people should compromise more than the warm blooded.

I agree.

They are either skint
Morally superior
Overweight
Menopausal
Pregnant
Or have health conditions like hyperthyroidism, diabetes or other conditions that lead to feeling too hot.

The problem is that those of use who feel the cold more easily have to suffer because the hot people always get their own way.

I don't turn the heating on. The thermostat kicks in when the temperature drops below 20 degrees, which means we go by temperature and not the calendar. TBH, find it surprising that so many mumsnetters don't have room thermostats.

You are wrong. 18 is the optimum temperature according to the NHS. 15 might be OK if you ars moving around but it is too cold for tha vast majority of people when sitting still.

Exactly. It's about good health, not who can tolerate living in a fridge.

Yes, that's shocking insulation!

Really? Im assuming youre not just sat down? Do you wear a jumper and coat? What do you wear when youre walking out and about?

I'm sitting on the sofa with my cat and a mug of tea.

I wear jeans, jumper, Barbour jacket and walking boots when I go out in winter. Isn't that pretty normal wearing a jumper and a coat when you go out in colder weather?

Oh thank you, that's very kind 😏

16 degrees is not cold.
Fortunately our family and friends are all sensible people who don't like their houses to be tropical either. My closest friend actually bought an air conditioning unit specifically because her pets were getting too warm.

And if guests on a bitterly cold day In Jan ever asked you to turn up the heating from 15/16 degree.., you’d… what? Tell them to put on another layer @SmallDogsAreScary

jokkkshfjjf · 18/10/2025 19:17

Our house only gets down to 18C when it’s literally freezing out, without the heating on. Well insulated new build.

Feeling the cold easily has nothing to do with not being sensible Hmm
Can you not appreciate that some people are either ill, underweight or have a poor circulation? Or are you always this morally superior?

16 degrees is too cold for most normal people sitting still while wearing a jumper. It is the minimum recommended temperature for office workers.

Try none of those.
Just a northern person (Orcadian Norwegian ancestry) who grew up in cold houses with no heating aside from an open fire and who has always struggled with heat. I get asthma and migraine in summer and I have summer SAD.

Why can't you accept that we're all different? Some of us feel more comfortable at a cooler temperature and it doesn't have to mean there is something wrong with us!

Comefromaway · 18/10/2025 19:22

I’m a menopausal woman with hot flushes and I think 18 is low. My heating is set to 18 or 19 mornings & evenings.

16 degrees is not cold.. Fortunately our family and friends are all sensible people who don't like their houses to be tropical either.

So, anyone who wants a house to be warmer than 16 degrees is not sensible? Perhaps you could try not to sound so morally superior about it then.

I’m aware that im far too invested in this!

i completely understand where you are coming from with regards to your personal preference but I still don’t see how so many people actually have houses that are that cold (Whether they want to or not).

I’m off out now so will leave you in peace.

Onegingerhead · 18/10/2025 19:27

Not yet, but in the winter we keep our thermostat at 20C during the time we are at home. Off for the night.

I'm not being morally superior in any way. I was asked about the temperature in my house. I have asthma during summer. I have fibromyalgia and I weigh 8 stone so yes I fully understand about illnesses and disabilities. . The "sensible" comment was in response to a snotty remark about me being a good host. It was not addressed at anybody else. So will you please stop bitching at me!!!

I don't give a fuck what temperature anyone else has their house at. I personally just don't like being hot! End of story.

QuietLifeNoDrama · 18/10/2025 19:29

I’d be feeling the cold at 18. Ours is usually set to 21/22. No way I’d want the windows open. Not really sure how you resolve it. You can’t really cool someone down. The only thing you can do it wear warmer clothes but I wouldn’t want to be sat at home in tons of thick layers

That was in response to a morally superior put down on me by somebody else and I'm actually pretty sure you know that.
Try reading the quote history before attacking someone. If anyone here is morally superior it's you.

Well no, you very clearly said "sensible" people don't like warm houses. If you've realised that was silly then say so rather than pretending you didn't say it.

People put dogs before guests. Very weird to me. But I am from a culture where hospitality is everything!

Please don't twist my words - read it in the correct context, which was in reply to the other poster. I'm not pretending anything. It was a snotty response to a snotty comment directed at me. If you want to make more of it then frankly that is your problem, not mine.

BeRoseSloth · 18/10/2025 19:42

And if these dogs can’t hack temp’s above 15/16, why the heck are they somewhere that has summers with temperatures often in excess of 16 degrees 😆
