Disagreements over what temperature to have heating set to.

Partner and I rarely disagree on much, but he’s getting strangely wound up over the temperature of the house.

For context, I rarely have heating on until the winter months, but I do like it on when people are bathing/showering so you come out to a nice warm towel and aren’t freezing in the bathroom.

I only have the thermostat set to 18 degrees so I don’t feel it’s overly warm, but he’s walking round trying to throw the windows open whereas DD and I are shivering and chucking on layers. He’s the type of person who would permanently sleep with a fan, and we do have a summer duvet on all year round to help with him over heating in the night and I just whack extra blankets on me. Every window in the house is also always slightly cracked open because we like the fresh air.

How do I resolve this? What’s the happy medium? And for interest - do you think 18 degrees is too warm inside?

@thatswhatshesaid36 your nighttime temperature issues may be easily resolved by the purchase of ‘partner duvets’ which have one side higher and one side lower tog rating. Also, you can get heated mattress toppers which are dual controlled so you can have your half on throughout the night as long as you want and the exact temperature you want whilst his half can be completely cold if he wishes!

Whats the temp without heating on? My draughty Victorian ( but terraced) only gets to 15 when it’s much colder than this. You must boil most of the year if your ideal temp is really 15.

We don't have any heating on yet. It's currently 15 upstairs, cooler downstairs. We both hate summer. We're fine from September to May, but June, July & August we struggle to keep the house cool enough to be comfortable.

Goldenphoenix · 18/10/2025 18:36

I would buy a heated throw for you and your daughter then you will all be comfortable?

Blanketpolicy · 18/10/2025 18:36

I would say if someone is already in just a tshirt and still too hot the temperature gets lowered as they can’t do much else to feel comfortable. Anyone cold can more easily layer up/wear warmer clothes.

who feels too cold / hot has changed over the years for us (thanks menopause) but we have stuck to that general rule.

18 in my house would be freezing in winter as it’s a very old house,in a new build that would be toasty.

You know 18 degrees will be 18 degrees everywhere in the world regardless of the age of the building?

I assume you live somewhere pretty cold?

FartyAnimal · 18/10/2025 18:41

I have the thermostat set to 20 in the sitting room of an evening. Husband still claims it's freezing and tries to set it to 24.

Rogerthat14 · 18/10/2025 17:43

What a lovely host you are.

My aunt was also someone that was liked her home cold and wrapped up with layers BUT when we visited she would make it lovely and toasty because she knew her guests liked it warm

Oh thank you, that's very kind 😏

16 degrees is not cold.
Fortunately our family and friends are all sensible people who don't like their houses to be tropical either. My closest friend actually bought an air conditioning unit specifically because her pets were getting too warm.

Squidgemoon · 18/10/2025 18:44

There’s always lots of competitive underheaters (anything above 15° is just indulgent) on these threads, just like the competitive undereaters (I couldn’t possibly eat a whole pizza, I’m stuffed after 2 slices!)

I haven’t had the heating on yet, it’s still pretty warm in the SE and my well insulated house is currently 20.5°. When it gets colder, we tend to have it set to 19° which DH (home all day every day) is fine with but when I’m home I put it up to 20°. I do put layers on etc, but if my nose is feeling cold, that’s too cold imo.

Not really. North West England. Quite high up, but no, it's not cold.

KookyRoseCrab · 18/10/2025 18:49

Sometimes then I’m glad in in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿😂 my heating is at 22 but it’s not come on because it’s a thermostat, but upstairs the radiators are turned down to 1 due to cost , the heating is expensive but I’m sitting under my heated throw

I’m trying not to come across as goady, but probably failing, I appreciate your answers.

im just surprised your house is only 14 degrees currently.

I also have no heating on and always have bedroom windows open and have a fan on all year round. Love a cold bedroom.

my house is around 18.5 degrees currently and if I weren’t going out I’d light the fire, as I love a fire but I wouldn’t have the heating on yet.

Newsenmum · 18/10/2025 18:53

Is he overweight? Often bigger people frel
hotter. 18 is fine. In Europe the standard is 21 and there was a movement in Germany to get people to try and stick to 18 to save energy!

Makemydaypunk · 18/10/2025 18:54

FleurDeFleur · 18/10/2025 17:29

Oh, I'm the same. It's never lower than 20°c in my house. I like to relax in comfort. However beware of all the competitive under heaters on here.
Ignoring NHS and govt guidelines, usually!

It’s the first of the seasons competitive who has their heating the lowest thread, has anyone said they don’t put their heating on until at least January yet?

SmallDogsAreScary · 18/10/2025 18:54

It's not competitive though @Squidgemoon , it's just what you're comfortable with, and it's exactly the same with pizza. We're all different. So yeah, I'm a cold house and 1 slice of pizza person because that's what I'm comfortable with. Honestly don't care what you or anyone else thinks.

Really? Im assuming youre not just sat down? Do you wear a jumper and coat? What do you wear when youre walking out and about?

dontmalbeconme · 18/10/2025 19:00

We manually put the heating on set to 18C when we feel cold. Generally we feel cold (in a jumper) at around 16C. So our house is generally between 16C and 18C.

We also have heated blankets & throws, so, if needed, we could get can extra blast of heat.

RampantIvy · 18/10/2025 19:01

2025VibeandThrive · 18/10/2025 16:18

I think 18 is too high. 15 feels more reasonable to me.

You are wrong. 18 is the optimum temperature according to the NHS. 15 might be OK if you ars moving around but it is too cold for tha vast majority of people when sitting still.

ArtTheClownIsNotAMime · 18/10/2025 19:02

The competitive underheaters are out in force.

18 is a good compromise for normal people. Generally speaking it's easier to warm up (layers) than cool down, so I think the cold blooded people should compromise more than the warm blooded.

SauvignonBlanche · 18/10/2025 19:03

Ours is set to 21.5 and DH is still sat next to me in a jumper and a blanket, he’s like it much warmer.

Ohtodostarjumps · 18/10/2025 19:08

SmallDogsAreScary · 18/10/2025 16:45

21 is far too hot for a long coated dog like that.

Agreed. I should have written OR.

WTAF?

If you go outside on a day when it’s 15 degrees, you aren’t talking about how warm it is. That’s nuts. I hate things being too warm. I sleep with a bedroom window open even in the winter. Even I have my house armed than 15 degrees.

@thatswhatshesaid36 The answer here is the rule of majority. You and your daughter are cold therefore you have the majority vote. He can surely cope with 18 degrees, it’s hardly balmy.

He doesn’t get to control it just because he is the man. If he opens a window, you close it.
