Disagreements over what temperature to have heating set to.

Partner and I rarely disagree on much, but he’s getting strangely wound up over the temperature of the house.

For context, I rarely have heating on until the winter months, but I do like it on when people are bathing/showering so you come out to a nice warm towel and aren’t freezing in the bathroom.

I only have the thermostat set to 18 degrees so I don’t feel it’s overly warm, but he’s walking round trying to throw the windows open whereas DD and I are shivering and chucking on layers. He’s the type of person who would permanently sleep with a fan, and we do have a summer duvet on all year round to help with him over heating in the night and I just whack extra blankets on me. Every window in the house is also always slightly cracked open because we like the fresh air.

How do I resolve this? What’s the happy medium? And for interest - do you think 18 degrees is too warm inside?

Ours is set to 15 or 16 because we have large dogs with a double coat and anything warmer isn't fair to them. We never argue about it and we tell visitors to wear warm clothes when they come to us.

Whats the temp without heating on? My draughty Victorian ( but terraced) only gets to 15 when it’s much colder than this. You must boil most of the year if your ideal temp is really 15.

On these threads I always wonder where the thermostat is.

If it's in the hall or an outer wall your 15 is likely higher elsewhere in the house.

Quite. I also think a lot of people must have unreliable thermostats.

What a lovely host you are.

My aunt was also someone that was liked her home cold and wrapped up with layers BUT when we visited she would make it lovely and toasty because she knew her guests liked it warm

Surely 18 is 18?? Or do you mean your house is damp so feel colder at a given temp? If so would a dehumidifier help you at all?

We lived in a new build previously,at 18 we felt warm,we bought an older property for more space but at 18 in this house there is still a chill in the air, doesn’t feel warm,we had a piv unit installed,no damp anywhere,we have upgraded the flooring a whole new central heating system/radiators,solid brick houses seem to hold the cold more.

Yes, it's really very low for an "ideal" temperature. It's been that, and above, outside until recently.

Popfan · 18/10/2025 17:46

We have ours on at 20 - 22.... 18 is cold and the aforementioned 15 is arctic conditions!

Hohumdedum · 18/10/2025 17:47

Can't believe people saying 15 degrees is OK!

We have ours on at 18.5, which is fine if I'm moving around but too cold if sitting still without a blanket! DH would have it at 21 degrees if I let him, so as a compromise he has a little heater in his study and an electric blanket on his side of the bed.

Recommend 100% wool clothing. Obvious, but it made a huge difference to me when I replaced all my ineffective cotton jumpers.

childofthe607080s · 18/10/2025 17:50

18 is the minimum most health authorities would say is acceptable - lower than that and lungs are under stress and the whole family will be more prone to respiratory illnesses

our thermostat is in the centre of the house and is set to 19 during waking hours ( always someone home) and the living room tends to sit at 20 as a result

if there is heat from cooking the thermostat would mean the hearing would not need to fire up

we can adjust each radiator

everyone feels temperature differently which is why some will wear shorts when others are in jumpers but going below 18 seems foolish

those happy at 15 must hate most of the year as too hot

dottiedodah · 18/10/2025 17:50

Ours is around 20c .we are in the south of England. Do feel cold though. Some of you sound quite tough! Apparently women feel about 4c less warm than men.you are not alone

mamagogo1 · 18/10/2025 17:52

18 is fine for us, warm house so rarely comes on. 21 is common though

Tulipvase · 18/10/2025 17:52

Silverpaws · 18/10/2025 17:31

Our heating comes on if it dips below 9 degrees. I am permanently cold, he's in a tshirt.

Seeing as a fridge can have a temp of 5 degrees, surely your heating must never come on if it’s set to 9?

yeesh · 18/10/2025 17:53

18 would be freezing for me. I like at least 20

This is abusive @Silverpaws

you don’t have any children?

He’s in T-shirt and shorts and too warm, I’m in joggers, T-shirt and oodie and cold 🤦🏻‍♀️ I’ll look into a heated throw!

Is hw over weight as this iw common with people who carry a lot of extra weight especially in the middle. I know as me and DH have the same issue. I am over weight and always on the warmer side and rewct exactly as your DH does. My DH has alreayd atartes to put heartng on at 20 newrly everyday. Even at night I wake up soaking and livid. Even my toddler who is in a full sleep bag is hot and sweaty. So not just me. But DH could live on the sun and still be cold

RumJerrySailorRum · 18/10/2025 17:58

We dont really use our central heating.
The bathroom towel rail is on all year round. The rest of the radiators only come on if the temp falls well below zero.

We do however have a woodburning stove.

If I'm cold my husband lights it. My comfort is more important than his discomfort. But its only in one room amd we dry our.washing in it.

The bedroom windows are opened every evening no matter how cold it is outside.

FleurDeFleur · 18/10/2025 18:04

Extraordinary, @RumJerrySailorRum . So you live in a house where the temperature can be just above freezing?
I'm not surprised you sleep with the windows open, it'll probably be warmer outside.
I genuinely don't know how you tolerate it, nor stay healthy. You may as well sleep at the bus depot.

Titasaducksarse · 18/10/2025 18:04

19 to 20 is fine. Below 18 is blooming chilly.

childofthe607080s · 18/10/2025 18:05

A wood burning stove is heating though

just bad for your lungs and less controllable heat around the home

The stove is in one room only. I'm guessing so that their pants eventually dry and don't freeze solid. True about the lungs, though.

Devilsmommy · 18/10/2025 18:09

Jesus, he'd have a right fit at mine. It's set for 22🤭 18 would be freezing in mine. Luckily my DH is of the opinion that I can put the heating on whenever I want at whatever temperature I want. I'd be telling yours to piss off, if your daughter is cold then put it on. Kids before partners always

Indianajet · 18/10/2025 18:18

20 is my ideal, just me and the labrador and we agree that is comfortable.

20 by day

I would freeze at 18. 21upwards for me. All the people who say they keep their temperatures low for the dog, don’t you walk the dog in the summer? I had a couple of long walks with a friend and her golden retriever this summer. The dog was fine and enjoyed the walks.

Edited

We don't walk ours at anything above 19. They would either get walked at 6am or not at all on a very hot day.
