to think that DS2's school is being unfair?

mumoftwo37 · 05/06/2008 09:06

DS2 attends a small primary school, only one class per year group. This year the school have decided to take all of them to a local amusement park. They say that as everyone is feeling the pinch at the moment that they will heavily subsidise the cost of the bus but we will all have to pay the entrance fee for our child(ren) - Fair enough no problem with that.
This is the bit I think that is unfair - every family has to pay £2.50 towards the bus regardless of how many children you have got. I disagree totally with that, why should I pay as much for one seat as the family down the road who will use 4? It is not the cost it is the principal. Dh says just pay it but I disagree.

I am astounded mumoftwo37 thought bringing her disability into the discussion was appropriate? What has being in a wheelchair got to do with anything?

mrsruffallo · 05/06/2008 10:33

Don't go then, mumoftwo!
Take him out and spend the 2.50 on him and him alone.
That'll teach 'em

goingslowlymad · 05/06/2008 10:33

For the love of God mumoftwo37 please don't send your child on the trip. Keep them home. I think this is one of teh most ridiculous threads I have ever read.

RosaLuxembourg · 05/06/2008 10:34

YABU. Very. And petty. And rather ridiculous.

flowerybeanbag · 05/06/2008 10:34

How many people have to say YABU before you accept that you are?

mrsruffallo · 05/06/2008 10:35

I can't believe you found two other families as mean as you

Fennel · 05/06/2008 10:35

I think it's a nice gesture by the school. If it's like our school it will have been decided by the PTA, who have been in charge of raising the money, in which case, it's up to the ones who bothered to raise it how it's spent (am not on PTA myself but am aware how hard they work for these things).

NO actually mrsruffallo I don't. What we actually said to the head was if we all pretended to be from larger families would the cost of the coach be covered? She said no and she needed to rely on the goodwill of those of us with one child to pay the full amount to cover the cost of the bus which I think is wrong.
I am going now as I need to go to the Doctors oh and to ring Thomas Cook to ask them to put a premium on my holiday as there are so many large families who believe they should be subsidised by those of us with more "average" families.

So don't send your DS on the trip then.
If you begrudge the £2.50, and you don't think he will enjoy the day, tell the school he won't be going.

I expect the Headteacher is really pleased the school made an effort.

The tale of how she gritted her teeth and smiled politely whilst a group of parents moaned about paying £2.50, and tried to club together to get a discount, will keep them all entertained in the staff room at lunchtime though, I suppose.

Saturn74 · 05/06/2008 10:38

Thomas Cook do holidays for £2.50?
I'm off to phone them too!

mrsruffallo · 05/06/2008 10:39

You are talking about 2.50!!
How large is the laregest family in the school?

IllegallyBrunette · 05/06/2008 10:40

So, the school are subsidising an otherwise expensive school trip, and you are moaning about contributing £2.50 ?

FGS get a grip.

Can you imagine the scene when the bill comes in a restaurant? "Well, I had two glasses of wine and you had one, but you had a pudding and coffee. Your main course was 75p more than mine and I think you had more of the bread, so you need to pay another 17p towards the cover charge. Oh, and I lent you 25p towards the parking meter, but we came in your car so that's all right. Shall we leave a tip? How about we leave 97p - you can leave 90p and I'll put 7p. I think that'a about right - oh no, you owe me 40p No, don't bother about it now - tomorrow morinng will do....."

mrsruffallo · 05/06/2008 10:47

Lol Seeker

wannaBe · 05/06/2008 10:50

What does being in a wheelchair have to do with the price of coach trips? or is it that you object to the term "standing around" [hmm?

I think you seriously need to get a grip over this. but just to spell it out:

the cost of the coach is not dependent on the amount of children that travel on it, the coach would cost the same whether there was one or 60 children on it.

Can't believe such miserable petty-minded people exist tbh.

wannaBe · 05/06/2008 10:52

pmsl seeker. bet the op takes a calculator to restaurants - none of this splitting the bill in half, oh no, in fact I imagine they have seperate bills for each member of the party. .

clam · 05/06/2008 10:52

Too to form a lucid, articulate contribution to this thread.....

...... except to ask if the OP has any idea how complex it is to organise a school trip like this? The staff should be thanked and congratulated, not harangued by a group of parents trying to get a further reduction. I'd love to be a fly on the wall in that staffroom at the moment.

happystory · 05/06/2008 10:56

Excellent seeker!

There are 71 posts now. if we all send mumoftwo 3p, she's nearly paid for it. If we send 4p each she's quids in.

No wait, some of posted several times... you send 10p, I'll send 3p.......

nailpolish · 05/06/2008 10:56

it is coming across to me that you are being a bit childish and looking at the parents of large families and stamping your feet and shouting "its not fair!" are you annoyed because you think these parents and getting favours?

i think £2.50 is cheap as chips, dont focus on other families, think about how your son is getting a fab school trip for £2.50 and just pay it and get on with the rest of the day

you know, some schools dont even have enough books to go round all the pupils never mind subsidise school trips

think about that

scaryteacher · 05/06/2008 10:57

What's living in an MQ got to do with ability to pay? Some of us who live in MQs and pay the rent and bills also have their own properties with mortgages on them. Unless you know the personal financial circumstances of all those living in MQs (which are NOT free), you can't comment, as you don't know their salaries or their outgoings.

Pay up and look big; I think that it's great the school is doing this for the kids. They could of course charge you in full for the coach, which would be more, and how much would it cost for you or your dp to take them there? More than £2.50 I bet!

WigWamBam · 05/06/2008 11:00

What a lot of fuss over £2.50

edam · 05/06/2008 11:00

I see your point but it is only £2.50. So YABU.
