To think most 5AA and 4AA rated embryos are boys?

wanttobegirlmum · 17/10/2025 14:23

I live in a country where it’s not possible to find out the gender of the embryos before transferring, like it’s possible in the USA for example, although we’ve done PGTA genetic testing. For personal reasons it is likely that the next successful embryo transfer (if we are lucky enough to have a successful one) would be our last baby. I really strongly have a preference towards a girl but our clinic doesn’t let us select embryos. This time I asked to go for a lower graded one, we went for the top graded one anyway because they missed / ignored my request, maybe didn’t pass it onto the embryologist who was defrosting, I don’t know. The next embryo we would go for a 5AA day 6, although they say that it was ready for PGTA only at day 6 but was a blastocyst by day 5. That’s most likely a boy, right? The next one down is 4AA day 6. I’d rather go for our 5BA or even 4BB as I’ve heard more chance of girls with lower grades. Is there any way I can insist on going for a lower graded one? In your experience were your higher rated embryos boys?

I’m sorry you’re struggle to have another child, it’s so tough. But you must not project your experience onto OP who has equally had a hard time.

Gender preference is common and totally understandable. Especially for people who already have one or more of the same sex. Acting like it’s unethical is really unkind to OP who just wants a chance of having a particular sex.

Embryos are not children. In the same way we must not shame women who have abortions. These are cells.

Gender selection is unethical. I am very glad it is illegal here and in the OP's countryside.

Blondeshavemorefun · 18/10/2025 07:50

No. Mini blondes was 5AA. And def pink

Blondeshavemorefun · 18/10/2025 07:55

Why on earth would you use a lower grade embryo

the higher the better

yes obv some low grades do work

friend years ago was 3cc and only had 2 embroys and was told both low grade and 10% chance but obv would put them back in

now strapping 6ft rugby players who are 20yrs old

NotEnoughKnittingTime · 18/10/2025 07:56

No way would be the clinic use the worst embryos first.

A 4AA embryo's gender cannot be determined by its grade alone; it must be confirmed with genetic testing like PGT-A. However, some research suggests that in IVF, male embryos may develop faster, leading to a higher chance of being graded highly, which could skew the observed gender ratio in a pool of top-grade embryos. Ultimately, the sex of a 4AA embryo is determined genetically (XX for female, XY for male), not by its grade, which describes its physical development.

It is unethical though. Which is why it’s widely banned

GetToHeaven · 18/10/2025 08:02

We used our 2 highest grade embryos (5AA & 4AA) and ended up with a boy and a girl.

Princessconsuelabananahammock9 · 18/10/2025 08:24

It’s always about having a girl. I’ve yet to see a gender disappointment thread about wanting a boy.

Ive seen a couple
but theyre rarer.

In real life I still know a few people obsessed with having boys. I know of two very wealthy people who did ivf in the states to have boys.

Namechangetry · 18/10/2025 13:19

Firstly you're talking about sex, not gender, embryos don't have a gender.

Secondly, the only way to choose what sex your child is is to adopt. You can't choose what sex your child is like this, and you should think about how you'll feel if you use a lower rated embryo and still get a boy, before you do anything.

I think posters are being a bit mean to the OP. It appears that embryo selection gives some element of sex selection.

I think most of us, who had standard pregnancies, if given a magic wand to choose a sex, would definitely waggle that wand, especially if we knew (like OP does) that subsequent children are far from guaranteed.

I think the OP is not wrong in wanting a girl, if that's a possibility, but needs to balance this with the ramifications of a lower grade embryo, not resulting in a successful implantation

She is not compromising the health of the foetus by choosing a lower grade, just the possibility of getting pregnant.

OP, are you transferring one or two embryos?

Coffeetime25 · 18/10/2025 14:48

so if you get the dreaded boy what are you going to do discard this kid and keep going untill you get a girl or what

QueenClinomania · 18/10/2025 16:11

ResusciAnnie · 17/10/2025 15:55

This is quite sickening. Allllllways about the boys!

How so since the op wants a lower quality to hopefully get a girl because statistics seem to show higher quality are male?

No actually
that choice would mean I don’t have my 3rd son
the actual live 18 year old I love with all my heart

I'm with the "give your head a wobble" poster.

As someone who had four IVF miscarriages I just cannot comprehend the gender disappointment mindset.

This.
id be grateful for a baby never mind what bloody sex it is

You're projecting.

On a population scale it’s unethical, yes.

But OP sharing her desire to have a girl isn’t unethical. Loads of people time sex, eat special foods, have sex in different positions etc to attempt to have certain sex child - may not work but it’s human nature to have preferences.

Dont make OP feel guilty for being human.

Well that’s you. People shouldn’t have to feel guilty because others are struggling.

Should I love every minute of life because I’m lucky I didn’t die of a childhood illness unlike some people? Should I walk around thanking my lucky stars I’m breathing everyday because others aren’t?

Youre projecting. It’s very sad when people suffer with infertility, life changing sad. But that shouldn’t mean OP can’t have a gender preference (like lots/most of people have at some stage).

Gabbycat245 · 18/10/2025 19:25

I can't really answer as my 3 day transfer wasn't graded, other than being an 8 cell. She's wonderful - though I was convinced she was a boy. I genuinely didn't mind that I thought she was a boy, though I am pleased she's a girl.

We have two that were frozen on day 6 as a 5CC and 5CB. I'm convinced they're also girls, but we'll never know! I'm sure my DD would have be a similar 'low grade' on day 6.

OP I would wonder whether a lower grade could mean a less healthy placenta or baby. My LG gave me a terrible time - she was small for gestational age and came out even smaller than they thought (predicted 9th centile, born 2nd centile). She had terrible feeding/stomach problems including the most horrific reflux, choking, not gaining weight. I have always wondered how much (if at all) her 'grade' contributed to this. However she's now an amazing little girl and I wouldn't change it or her for the world!

Swiftie1878 · 18/10/2025 19:26

We used 4AA and got a girl. 😁
But seriously, just hope for a healthy happy baby.

You need to seriously catch a grip. Arguing about dying due to childhood illness or being alive is totally irrelevant to this post.
you must not have been through IVF as getting a child at all is the against the odds!

you seem to be going down the thread and commenting on everyone’s post who disagrees with the OP, who by the way posted this on AIBU. Yes she is being unreasonable and it’s you that is projecting!

Rainbowchicken · 18/10/2025 19:31

Surely you choose the embryo that has the highest chance of success? Choosing a lower quality embryo when you have a better quality one available is just fucking bonkers. My 4aa was a girl BTW.

mrwwhite · 18/10/2025 19:34

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 17/10/2025 14:27

I have no idea about any of this but am interested why the assumption is 'lower grade' embryo would be a girl? What is the grading based on?

They develop slightly slower than boys generally so they get a lower grade
