Is anyone else planning to leave the UK?

AuntieMeemz · 17/10/2025 09:59

Everything we gain, earn or get is taxed and we are not seeing the benfit we would expect from it. We have a government that is not representing all of us.
I have always taken a keen interest in current affairs, in the UK and abroad so it's not a rash decision (and i don't want to trigger a debate about my reasons for leaving). I have learned when it is time to walk away.
Even before all this, we had decided to leave the UK, but we are speeding up plans. Is anyone else doing the same?
The grass will not be greener on the other side (have lived in 3 other countries when i was younger). We will be working on line for our last couple of years before retirement.
'We' means DH, DD (18 )and DS (21). DH totally onboard. DD and DS not, so we can't just leave them.

All countries in Europe are having significant problems.

Ageing populations are a big issue everywhere in Europe that means higher taxes for the foreseeable

I understand leaving for better salaries or because housing is too expensive but where is this utopia with low taxes & excellent public services?

Yes, @teacupzs. I’d love to live in that country too, if someone can tell me where it is?!

FKAT · 17/10/2025 18:13

No, it's mostly nice here. It has its problems but so does every where. Please let me know what country in the world is immune from inflation, war, rising cost of living, racism, decline in public services, climate change and poverty?

The very few affluent egalitatarian countries with very high standards of living versus the UK have their own challenges. Do you want to pay the tax rates in Norway? Live next door to Russia in Finland? Find out exactly how multicultural and inclusive Denmark is? If you already have the wealth and qualifications required by Switzerland then your life is pretty good now.

I'd rather stay and spend my energy solving problems than flounce. Also the key to a happy life is having a close community around you. It's very hard to build one from scratch in a foreign country even if you do have a job on the ground there. Many immigrants I know - even the ones who are happy with their choice - experience loneliness and miss their circle, their family their language and not having to constantly culturally adapt to the new country.

I'm curious about that too (Irish, long resident in the UK). I actually think Ireland has very similar underlying issues to the UK, in terms of an ageing population, housing, health care, immigration and the resulting tensions etc. Irish politics is I think also beginning to shift rightwards (we tend to be a decade behind Europe in those kinds of shifts). Though we obviously had the sense not to leave the EU I guess!

Yes, I've noted a shift towards the right, and there have been attacks on migrants and ethnic minorites. There is also a housing problem. All these issues are increasingly common throughout Europe.

My dh has to give the government £1m next week in tax. We’re waiting for the budget in a few weeks and if inheritance is up we’re off. After working his arse off he wants his kids to benefit. He’s done his bit. Enough’s enough.

Or another way of looking at it, as tax is a smaller percentage than you take home, you've done really well out of the UK and now you want to leave to dodge tax on a fortune you've earned or acquired.

PurpleChrayn · 17/10/2025 10:31

Yes.

We’re moving to Israel where DH is from. Life has become pretty intolerable for Jews in the UK. Several incidents recently, involving our young children. Were sick of feeling unwelcome.

When are you actually moving?

I only ask because I recall you saying it for a long time now... certain user names n all.

Such a big move.

acorncrush · 17/10/2025 18:28

Taxes aren’t the issue.
Things like spontaneous “free Palestine” celebrations when people are murdered are the issue.

Not at present, but I will certainly consider it if Reform gets in. My dd would probably leave at that point anyway, so the only thing that would keep me here in that scenario is my elderly dad.

We've had years of sluggish growth and under investment in public services, so things aren't great here at the moment, but as you said, the grass isn't necessarily greener elsewhere.

This. We have savings started and intend to move if reform gets in. Would otherwise never consider moving but knowing we have the option to leave if those clowns are in charge gives me some comfort

I am genuinely very sorry to hear this. No minority group should feel so threatened in their own country. I hope you and your family keep safe.

localnotail · 17/10/2025 18:51

You need to tell us where you are planning on moving/ which country you consider to be better than the UK. In terms of tax and " current affairs".

This would show everyone what your real issues are. If you cant say I think you are a Reform troll.

Edited: France - good luck if you dont speak French like a native. Portugal - I have Portuguese friends living in London who cant move back as there is no work... US and Australia - erm, how are these are better than the UK? US especially.

Papyrophile · 17/10/2025 20:35

I think we might have moved, partly for tax but more for weather, five years ago but we have a business with employees that we want to see sorted and taking the company forward. I speak French and (increasingly) Spanish quite decently. Since then, we have had three very hot summers out of the last five, and DH cannot spend more than a few minutes in full sun now. So no move is likely.

The UK is small and very well located in temperature. Rarely freezes its population in winter, and only has a few days above uncomfortably hot in summer. Sorry about the rain, but it makes the UK one of the best countries in the world to raise high quality livestock/meat. Not relevant if you are vegan of course, but actually, the UK is nearly perfect. Climatically only New Zealand is equally agreable as a place to live.

Oillj · 17/10/2025 20:39

We’re in the process of moving in the NY due to a work opportunity for dh, theres many things about the UK we love but have had things that have made us feel unsafe and just wanting to try something different.

In what ways do you think that NY would be safer than the UK?

Moving in the new year, not New York

Oh sorry! I completely misunderstood! 😃
Where would you move to?

teacupzs · 17/10/2025 20:46

Our climate is a major plus

We’re moving to New Zealand, which while not perfect (nowhere is) we are looking forward to a new start.

Ok, well I'm very sorry to hear that you feel unsafe, that's terrible. I hope it works out for you 🤞

Asosbabe · 17/10/2025 20:50

I'd leave if I could. Not in a position'. Living in the UK stinks now

GypsyQueeen · 17/10/2025 20:53

I'm keen on Jersey......

BoredZelda · 17/10/2025 20:56

I would consider it, but not sure where I would go. Everywhere seems to be just a different flavour of shit, so what would be the point.

There’s a lot good about living here, I do like it, but I don’t like how the future is shaping up politically and I’d love to escape that. Sadly I think it’s going to be a global problem and I’ve yet to find somewhere I’d like to live that’s untouched by it.

EmeraldRoulette · 17/10/2025 20:56

How old are the DC that don't want to go?

Also, what is a "snowflake" existence?

I'm not going anywhere. The only place I'd actually like to go is America and I don't have any skills they need. I do wish I tried earlier in life.

I have an elderly mother that I wouldn't leave, but at the moment I don't want to leave anyway. I'm thoroughly pissed off but I don't know if the things I'm pissed off about are as bad or worse in other countries.

Luddite26 · 17/10/2025 20:57

No not at all. I would miss the beautiful countryside. I had the chance to leave 30 years ago and the train journey from Manchester airport to Yorkshire in January made me stay.
I love the drab winter scene I love the emerging spring, the heavy summer garden and Autumn is stunning. I was in my element last week looking at all the beautiful colours driving through the Cotswolds.

notnorman · 17/10/2025 20:59

I quite fancy Portugal. The visa is less expensive. We have a place in another European country but the non lucrative visa price is huge - so that’s out.

SeaAndStars · 17/10/2025 21:08

"Everything we gain, earn or get is taxed"
That has pretty much always been the case.

"and we are not seeing the benfit we would expect from it."
What benefits are you expecting?

"We have a government that is not representing all of us."
When did we last have a government that represented all of us?
