To have cried at Dr not to send me home

For 3 weeks I’ve had left flank pain that’s slowly been getting worse, coupled by loss of appetite and loss of weight for past 2 months (unintended). 3 days ago things really went down hill which ruined my work projects and the pain becoming so bad I started vomiting from the pain and passing out; this prompted me to see the GP who sent me straight to A&E.

29hrs later I’ve finally been told my blood test and urine test suggest something underlying but my CT scan came back clear so I can go come. He said maybe it’s an infection but my temperature isn’t that high.

I just burst into tears at the thought of going home in this pain with no meds to fix anything. He was taken back by my reaction and asked if I felt I needed to stay, I explained what’s been going on and he was surprised as he hadn’t realised how long it had been going on for (I had said on arrival and it was in my GP letter). I then begged to not be sent home and he has agreed but now I feel silly.

Please listen to your intuition. I did and it ended up saving my life. I was sick for a long time and was in and out of hospital and underwent lots of tests. A doctor decided it was all in my head and I was sent home with a referral to mental health support. I kept getting sicker and sicker and one day I woke up thinking something was very wrong as I was freezing cold one moment then boiling hot the next. My intuition was telling me there was something very wrong so I went to hospital and was admitted quickly. Tests revealed I had an infection in my heart and would need open heart surgery to save my life. My cardiologist told me if I hadn't gone to hospital when I did I wouldn't have lived for much longer. I'm not telling you this to scare you but it's really important to listen to your body and to get the answers you need and deserve.

We shouldn't have to fight and plead and beg for basic health care when we are sick.

Pilfer · 17/10/2025 16:22

Reasontoreason · 17/10/2025 11:39

could be covid

For multiple weeks that started with flank pain, infection markers in the blood, blood in the stool and unexplained weight loss?

rainbowunicorn22 · 17/10/2025 18:08

sometimes you have to fight for your corner hope they sort it out for you

Jerseygirl2023 · 17/10/2025 18:08

I hope as the day has went on the abx have had some sort of effect on you. This is so awful you’re needing to do this with minimal medical support x

I managed to go collect our eldest from school, felt like absolute crap and look dreadful but I suppose if I managed that then I can’t be that bad?

(husband had to stay with our disabled child who doesn’t cope well with husband leaving)

Side pain, chest pain (new) and headache is manageable with codeine and naproxen

Go back to A&E. Quote the sepsis diagnosis and demand a Martha’s law review. Please don’t leave it over the weekend.

DeQuin · 17/10/2025 18:19

new chest pain: please call 111

I give up. You've been told what to do.

Motnight · 17/10/2025 18:26

Bloody hell, Op. You are really risking your health here.

MummyJ36 · 17/10/2025 18:32

OP why are you not going back to a&e? It sounds like you have a support system who could help with childcare in the short term (and long term with DH!) so why are you not looking after yourself??

Orangemintcream · 17/10/2025 18:34

For goodness sake go to a hospital.

Mcoco · 17/10/2025 18:37

Is it worth going to another hospital and saying you are still in agony?

Blablibladirladada · 17/10/2025 18:37

Good you said something!

Doctor should have known and you told him so perfect.

Gosh, you poor thing. I hope they give you something and they find out what on earth it is…

Op you need to go back to A&E.

My mum's sepsis was missed despite pretty much every symptom EXCEPT a high temperature, they did not start the antibiotics in time (usual sepsis protocol) and the result was devastating.

In the ensuing investigation the hospital admitted that her body couldn't raise her temperature as it was too busy fighting off the infection. If you have any symptoms you should be treated as if sepsis is diagnosed. It's incredible you were sent home yesterday.

Go back RIGHT NOW. Ask for a second opinion based on the new Martha's Law. Do not leave again until they have recorded a diagnosis on your records. I didn't advocate for my mum because I wasn't aware of the protocols and how fast everything can go wrong. I want you, or your dad, or your DP to advocate for YOU now.

Good luck.

I mean this with kindness because you don’t seem to be responding to all of the experienced posters who have given you really sensible advice.

How will your children cope if it turns out to be something that lands you in intensive care for a month? Or worse? As they grow up, do you think any of them will be mentally congratulating you on how brave you were to soldier on and do the school run through all of the symptoms you have, rather than advocating for yourself?

Seriously, if you’d been as stubborn in hospital as you’re being about going back, you’d have had a diagnosis by now. Stop pissing about and go back to A&E before you collapse and your DH has to call an ambulance at 3am.

chocolatemademefat · 17/10/2025 18:51

You did the right thing. Medics are busy and who knows how hard he studied your file. It’s easier to get treatment when you’re in hospital - it can take time to get re-admitted. Stay where you are and let them help you.

Mustreadabook · 17/10/2025 18:58

If the antibiotics yesterday had worked you’d feel better by now. Did they not give you more to take? Go back.

This is why I haven’t gone back, I don’t think I can be that bad as I managed to collect my child from school.

and yes I feel bad but not that bad to go back in to A&E!

my head is pounding and my right eye still isn’t reacting well to the light but I can still just bout do stuff like collect my child before retreating back to my bed!

(I’ve had sepsis after child birth, was pretty rough for a week - I certainly threw up more than I am now, and had more sweats than I am now)

this thread was only meant to be about whether I was being unreasonable to cry to get seen. I guess it did at least get me antibiotics and fluids, I could certainly be feeling a lot worse if I was discharged without them and I have this further course to finish here at home.

If you’re unwell like you’re describing, get off mumsnet and call 111 for medical advice. I guarantee they will get you seen by someone. Yes you’ll have to wait but you can still use mumsnet whilst waiting. You’ve got children - stop being so stupid if you have blood tests saying sepsis and you don’t feel better after antibiotics. Some antibiotics can affect the retina so you need to be seen.

MissMoneyFairy · 17/10/2025 19:12

What do you mean your eyer isn't reacting well to the light

myheadsjustmush · 17/10/2025 19:17

I sincerely hope @Whatsthematterwiththebatinthecave is okay.

Very similar happened to me a few years back. I felt dreadful; my GP fobbed me off with suggestions to take vitamins etc, etc.

After feeling crap for weeks, and after yet another GP appointment, I was sent to our local hospital. The doctor who assessed me was very sharp in his tone, said I could go home. I broke down and said I felt so ill I really couldn't and wanted to stay.

He reluctantly admitted me. I was subsequently diagnosed with septicaemia and ended up on IV antibiotics for 5 days.
