To have cried at Dr not to send me home

For 3 weeks I’ve had left flank pain that’s slowly been getting worse, coupled by loss of appetite and loss of weight for past 2 months (unintended). 3 days ago things really went down hill which ruined my work projects and the pain becoming so bad I started vomiting from the pain and passing out; this prompted me to see the GP who sent me straight to A&E.

29hrs later I’ve finally been told my blood test and urine test suggest something underlying but my CT scan came back clear so I can go come. He said maybe it’s an infection but my temperature isn’t that high.

I just burst into tears at the thought of going home in this pain with no meds to fix anything. He was taken back by my reaction and asked if I felt I needed to stay, I explained what’s been going on and he was surprised as he hadn’t realised how long it had been going on for (I had said on arrival and it was in my GP letter). I then begged to not be sent home and he has agreed but now I feel silly.

This is a shocking thread.

Please go back to A&E, and take your dad with you.

babyproblems · 17/10/2025 05:46

totallly justified @Whatsthematterwiththebatinthecave i hope you feel better soon!
Ive only been to a&e a couple of times but I get the impression they don’t take anything seriously unless you arrive in an ambulance and very close to death. You did the right thing!!!!

babyproblems · 17/10/2025 05:47

Just seen your update op - fgs! Go back with your dad. Is there another A&E you can go to?? Go back. Xxx

PollyDarton1 · 17/10/2025 06:06

You need to go back in I think OP. If they’ve given you IV antibiotics they are quick and you should feel some kind of relief from the high temp relatively quickly.

The fact your temp is still high and you are still showing signs of infection means whatever you’ve been given is likely either not worked or not strong enough to tackle whatever infection you have.

I (sadly) can quite believe they’ve sent you home - I had sepsis 3 years ago, I presented at A&E with a 40.5c temperature and was going in and out of consciousness, but left on a chair in a waiting room. I started throwing up and begged for at least a bed because I was in so much pain and dizziness. My CRP was 489 and I had cellulitis, and was then diagnosed with sepsis. They gave me fluids and IV antibiotics, and once I felt better they discharged me for day patient care so I had to go back once a day for 2 weeks to get hooked up to an IV and have my ankle/leg checked out. They didn’t have any beds, and my Mum had to come over to care for me. The day unit were fabulous I must say, but it was a terrifying time and I genuinely felt like I was dying (which is one of the ‘symptoms’ of sepsis). If I hadn’t advocated for myself in the A&E ward, I don’t know what would have happened as they’d placed me in minor injuries with a 4 hour wait ahead of me.

liveforsummer · 17/10/2025 06:19

I hope you are back at hospital now OP. Does not sound good at all!

Blarghism · 17/10/2025 06:32

Where is the 2nd closest A&E to you? Go there.

Ladybugheart · 17/10/2025 06:51

MaurineWayBack · 16/10/2025 20:23

You’ve been on an NHS chair fir 29 hours?!?

Thats such a long time.

I hope you’ll be able to get some rest now and the pain will calm down 🫂🫂

The same happened to me, literally 28 hours on a chair in a and e. Horrendous, was so ill I stayed in for a week.

DeQuin · 17/10/2025 07:09

When you are feeling terrible it's so hard to advocate for yourself because you want it all to go away so hard. I'm so sorry you've had this happen to you OP. Hope you went back and went with your dad so he can advocate for you, and hope you get sorted and feel better quickly.

TroysMammy · 17/10/2025 07:09

@Sparla "If you need a bit more pain relief you can try cocodamol at the pharmacy. Just be careful to not take too much paracetamol."

You do realise the "amol" bit in co-codamol is paracetamol and it's 500mg the same as a paracetamol tablet. Co - together, cod - codeine, amol - paracetamol. You shouldn't take co-codamol and paracetamol together.

WhitePudding · 17/10/2025 07:28

Might it be gallstones?

mummymetalhead · 17/10/2025 07:34

Please go back xx

Marcipix · 17/10/2025 07:47

Get your dad to take you back and don’t take no for an answer.
it’s really important that you are seen again

Mischance · 17/10/2025 07:53

I could weep reading this. I speak as one who has had to use A&E a great deal due to heart problems. Just reading these posts takes me back to the chaos and sense of total impotence.
Please get your Dad to take you up to a different hospital. I know the prospect will feel daunting after what has gone before, but that is where you need to be.

Scotsmare77 · 17/10/2025 08:10

If you have blood in your stool, high temp, weight loss and pain you need a colonoscopy.

You could very well have Crohn’s disease. Ask for a calprotectin stool test to check your levels of bowel inflammation.

Best of luck x

Ocelotfeet27 · 17/10/2025 08:17

Go back to hospital with a man to help back you up (sad, outrageous but seems to make a difference with some doctors). Say you are feeling even worse. Hopefully a new set of doctors on that won't fob you off. Try to get some bloods done - and ask to see the actual results. If your CRP level is higher refuse to leave until you've had more IV antibiotics.

Unfortunately the system is failing right now. I had sepsis and went in to see four different medical professionals over a few days and kept being sent away. Eventually one person realised something was very wrong- just in time as I nearly died.

Whatsthematterwiththebatinthecave · 17/10/2025 08:17

It’s a trip to my GP isn’t it that I need I think?

Although I do now have such a throbbing headache and cannot use one of my eyes

Dads dropped me back home with husband and the kids, so being monitored by them now.

I haven’t returned back to A&E as it could be the flu I guess? I also feel so unwell I cannot stand the thought of being stuck on a plastic chair again for over a day

I agree with this OP. My CRP was more than 950 and they still didn't seem very bothered. Apparently a CRP that high is very bad.

Don't let them fob you off - ask for a second opinion, say you want to speak to PALS etc.

Your GP can't do a blood test and get yhe results back quickly like the hospital can. But you could go to the GP who hopefully will assess you as very poorly and then you will be back at A&E with a medical professionals recommendation to back you up.

I don't want to scare you OP but sepsis is nasty and it can quickly turn into septic shock which you really, really don't want.

My son had septic shock last year. One minute he was a healthy 8 year old and the next minute, he was fighting for his life and in intensive care for 7 weeks.

Please, please don't be fobbed off.

TeddyCatCentral · 17/10/2025 08:36

Your symptoms remind me of a couple of years ago when I had a burst ovarian cyst that became infected. I’m astonished they sent you home when they’ve mentioned sepsis as a possibility. By all means call GP but I think when you list your symptoms they’ll send you to A and E. (I was in for over a week on antibiotics, fluids, morphine etc). Please call GP or go back to A and E!

Petitchat · 17/10/2025 08:39

It's so awful I don't know what to say OP, except I sincerely hope you get something done soon and feel better.
Sending you kind thoughts and strength..Flowers

Iocanepowder · 17/10/2025 08:40

So are you at least going to get seen by someone today op? Are you contacting the GP or 111 if you don’t want to go back to a&e?

capybaracapybara · 17/10/2025 08:40

Is there a different hospital near you, can you go to a different A&E from before??

BitterSweetBirthday · 17/10/2025 08:42

I don't say this lightly but you need to go to A and E now!!!

Mischance · 17/10/2025 08:49

I hear you when you say you can't face the hours in a plastic chair - I know this so well and have stayed home against advice before because it all felt too daunting. But you MUST go and be seen.
