To have cried at Dr not to send me home

For 3 weeks I’ve had left flank pain that’s slowly been getting worse, coupled by loss of appetite and loss of weight for past 2 months (unintended). 3 days ago things really went down hill which ruined my work projects and the pain becoming so bad I started vomiting from the pain and passing out; this prompted me to see the GP who sent me straight to A&E.

29hrs later I’ve finally been told my blood test and urine test suggest something underlying but my CT scan came back clear so I can go come. He said maybe it’s an infection but my temperature isn’t that high.

I just burst into tears at the thought of going home in this pain with no meds to fix anything. He was taken back by my reaction and asked if I felt I needed to stay, I explained what’s been going on and he was surprised as he hadn’t realised how long it had been going on for (I had said on arrival and it was in my GP letter). I then begged to not be sent home and he has agreed but now I feel silly.

My friend had a tumor in her intestines and the same symptoms as you , it was benign but had she waited long enough it would have killed her . Push them to more tests , never regret advocating for yourself or your loved ones

“Suspected sepsis” should be treated as actual sepsis until proven otherwise. I’m really shocked they have discharged you.

I agree 100%

That is shocking behaviour!!! And how exactly is a patient supposed to self manage "suspected sepsis " themselves anyway?? If the OP had called 111 with the symptoms she'd have been literally told to go to a+e as an emergency!! 🤨

https://www.cosinuss.com/en/2020/03/11/rethinking-early-warning-score-ews-in-the-digital-age/

you can also use parts of this to monitor overnight

Respiratory rate (breaths per minute), pulse, temperature. Oxygen sats if you have an oximeter, BP if you have a monitor

But please, please use the sepsis list that another user posted above

DSis has just come through sepsis and getting her help was bloody hard

Hello DSis! 🥳

OP I’d honestly go back and not leave until they’ve sorted you, it’s not worth getting this wrong. Hope you get better soon!

mummymetalhead · 16/10/2025 23:48

The way you’ve been treated is appalling.
keep pushing and advocating for yourself and take someone with you if you can.
I’ve nearly died at the hands of drs and the only thing that stopped that was me refusing to back down.

I overruled my GP last week. Went for my pre op assessment. Was told to go straight to my GP because my blood pressure was too high which meant they wouldn't operate.

Phoned GP who said well take your BP twice a day for two weeks then call the surgery back. I forcefully explained that the surgery had noted my BP was too high two years previously and I didn't bloody have two weeks to fart around with machine taking a reading the hospital insisted that I went on tablets immediately. Otherwise they wouldn't operate.

I'd already wasted two years not being believed by the surgery so in despair went private. The consultant sent me straight down to x-ray who confirmed both hips were stage 4 and one hip the ball had disintegrated, the bone had migrated upwards and I must be in agony. I admit I broke down at that news because someone finally believed me.

Then I got mad I could have wrapped my two sticks around the GPs neck if they'd been standing there.

So no I won't take any shit from the NHS anymore.

egganbacon · 17/10/2025 00:08

OP I hope you are safe at home! Absolutely any indication that you feel unwell again please go back to AE . As a nurse who worked in AE many years ago your treatment is alien to me …fucking shocking!

Lougle · 17/10/2025 00:15

Northerngirl821 · 16/10/2025 23:32

CT is the gold standard for kidney stones, OP does not need an ultrasound scan “to rule out kidney stones”.

The vast majority of people with “suspected sepsis” do not have sepsis.

"The vast majority of people with “suspected sepsis” do not have sepsis."

But the ones who do die or end up with life changing injuries from the massive doses of vasopressors needed to keep them alive if they aren't treated promptly. That's why we always treat as sepsis until it isn't.

It's quite possible that @Whatsthematterwiththebatinthecave 's blood tests and other observations were reassuring. If the doctor had taken 5 minutes to explain that to her, then she probably wouldn't be posting about her discharge summary which says 'suspected sepsis.' If the d/c summary listed the reassuring results, that also would have reassured @Whatsthematterwiththebatinthecave that she had been given the appropriate assessment and treatment.

Have you taken a screening test due bowel cancer?

Italiangreyhound · 17/10/2025 01:07

100% you did the right thing.

I hope you will be OK.

Bowies · 17/10/2025 02:53

If you had all the IV antibiotics they could give you as a precaution/prevention and nothing else came back as worrying, I can understand why they discharged you home.

The main issue was their communication was poor at the end and you were left with a lack of clarity and feeling judged.

Hopefully you are feeling much better and can follow up with your GP.

Are you able to take regular paracetamol and ibuprofen at home and monitor your temperature? If you become really unwell again despite this I would have a low threshold to return to A&E (maybe a different hospital if there is a choice).

Have you taken a screening test due bowel cancer?

^^ this

I had the same symptoms but mine went on longer

Many telephone GP appointments, several visits to A&E, the last I was shouted at to get out, after being brought in by ambulance on some very good drugs, and told I was time wasting and a drug seeker

I had bowel cancer

Whatsthematterwiththebatinthecave · 17/10/2025 03:39

Bowl cancer could account for the bloody stools. Dr said it’s nothing at my age though, probably something I’ve eaten.

i honestly feel worse, I’ve woken up shivering and my temp is back over 40, I’ve taken paracetamol but isn’t touching the pain or the temp. I’m too nervous to go back in now tbh, I feel so anxious

Whatsthematterwiththebatinthecave · 17/10/2025 03:41

I suppose I’m just shocked they didn’t take my bloods or check my urine yesterday, especially given the day before the urine nd bloods came back with infection markers

FeeFiFoFummy · 17/10/2025 03:53

You need to go back to A&E, OP

Go in OP…likely a different team on anyway. Are you able to take Ibuprofen as well meanwhile?

PennyRest · 17/10/2025 04:01

Agree, please go back in. Ask your Dad to go with you perhaps, but do go OP.

reginaPhalange1990 · 17/10/2025 04:26

Go back 100%

Zanatdy · 17/10/2025 04:26

Go back if your temp doesn’t settle. This doesn’t sound right at all.

FeeFiFoFummy · 17/10/2025 04:38

How are you OP? Did you go back to A&E? I hope you did

Iocanepowder · 17/10/2025 04:42

Sorry to read this op, please do go back, or ring 111 at the very least. Please do also ask for Martha’s rule.

ItWillBeDone · 17/10/2025 04:50

I'm sorry you're feeling so poorly and have had such a poor experience. I also encourage you to go back to hospital, the care you've received isn't good enough. Good luck.

Pilfer · 17/10/2025 05:00

Another one saying that you need to go back.

springintoaction2 · 17/10/2025 05:01

You need your CRP (infection marker in blood) checking again - I would be very concerned with fever of above 40

justasking111 · 17/10/2025 05:12

Please Go back to the hospital.

Sparla · 17/10/2025 05:12

Have they asked you to go back for more antibiotics? When my daughter had a UTI (age 10) which had spread she had to do daily IV antibiotics for a week or until they identified the bacteria. We went home with more antibiotics after that - they didn’t find the bug which isn’t uncommon but it was definitely an infection. It was ok to be home between the IVs. I hope you get similar treatment. My daughter had only got worse one night before then - vomiting and fever.

If you need a bit more pain relief you can try cocodamol at the pharmacy. Just be careful to not take too much paracetamol.

Menopause can result in being susceptible to UTIs. You can ask for prophylactic antibiotics if it’s happening a lot.
