Opinions on these two houses?

Posting here for traffic, apologies! My friend did similar recently and found the advice really helpful (these houses are in a similar area).

Which do you prefer out of these two houses? Any comments or observations welcome.

House 1:

House 2:

https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/165007046#/?channel=RES_BUY

I think we are edging towards house 1, as the plot is better (driveway parking and doesn’t open on to street) but there is a footpath nearby which gets quite busy as near a shopping centre. Not sure if anyone has experience of living near similar?

I prefer 2, although neither are really my taste.

NotrialNodeal · 16/10/2025 15:32

I don't like either but gun to head house 1 just cause it seems more spacious.

Gingercar · 16/10/2025 15:34

2 is a much nicer house, slightly more character. No 1 looks almost clinical to me. But the garden and parking is better. I don’t love either of them

Sassylovesbooks · 16/10/2025 15:35

Personally I would go for property 1. You have plenty of off road parking. Property 2 is a lovely property but I bet being a relatively new building, you have parking for 1 or at a push 2 cars. Usually the roads surrounding these new build estates are for access only, and you aren't allowed to park on them.

TheatricalLife · 16/10/2025 15:37

Number one for the space, although it's not very appealing from the outside.

The purple room in number two is...different. Not that it has anything to do with your choice, but it's certainly, um, eye catching!

childofthe607080s · 16/10/2025 15:38

One looks less cramped, simpler for furniture, less stairs

Ashy987654 · 16/10/2025 15:41

I wouldn't go for either.
2 is the nicer house IMO, however the plot is poor and parking looks awful.
1 just doesn't appeal at all.

Sunfloweranddaisy · 16/10/2025 15:43

House 1 definitely. Better garden and parking.
Its also more of a blank canvas then the other so you can do it to your taste over time then house 2 with the coloured bedrooms.

House 2 has too many little window areas I personally wouldn’t like. Makes it feel smaller than it actually is. Only nice room is the kitchen.

TMMC1 · 16/10/2025 15:45

It depends what is important to you with this move. Do you ah e a check list of what you are looking for and the deal breakers/musthaves?

1 has a better space and offers you the opportunity to renovate and make your own. 2 is done so that’s what you will be living with. 2 has keen appeal, 1 doesn’t.

neither are for me, I can only comment on the details as I don’t know what you need in the property or how long you intend to live there.

pikkumyy77 · 16/10/2025 15:49

Honestly I agree with those who say both are awful. But 1over 2 if I had to pick because being on that odd corner with so much street exposure feels worse than the first house even though the first house looks like a covert abattoir.

What don’t you like about them? Not disputing opinion of course, but interested in why! :)

FreyaFromTheFens · 16/10/2025 15:57

Both are awful! Keep looking would be my advice.
I have a footpath/bridleway at end of my garden and it drives my dogs mad every time someone goes past, although it's edged with hedges and house 1 you linked to is walled off so you probably wouldn't notice people walking past but it might be noisy especially if used as a cut through at night.

Do you have children or a dog to consider as those gardens are tiny and not very nice spaces to spend time in?

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 16/10/2025 15:57

Property number one as it’s more spacious. Outside area better too. At the moment it is looking as though the previous occupants purchased the property but ran out of cash when it came to furnishing, but it will look completely different once you’ve got your own furnishings in. You can choose to decorate later if you wish and put a bit more personality on the place.

Not at all keen on the second property .

renovationqueen · 16/10/2025 15:58

I don't really like either of them but prefer 1 - I don't like that 2 is on the corner like that.

Reasons I wouldn't buy either are the fact that they are arranged over 3 floors. I would personally prefer all bedrooms on the same floor, maybe a guest room or older teenagers room on a third floor.

MrsDoylesTeaTray · 16/10/2025 15:59

1 looks awful, 2 has more curb appeal, but I’d worry the render will look crap in a few years. Is there an option 3 because neither are great?

MellowPinkDeer · 16/10/2025 15:59

Don’t know anything about the area but unless you specifically need 5 bedrooms house 2 is much nicer .

Garamousalata · 16/10/2025 16:01

I like number two best.

Ionlymakejokestodistractmyself · 16/10/2025 16:01

No 2 has weird angles and less natural light from the photos.

No 1 id need to spend a lot on internally to make it to my taste.

Bedrooms in no 1 aren't massive but I think I prefer the general house layout.

childrenwatchthefools · 16/10/2025 16:03

Number 1 is the most depressing house I’ve ever seen on here! It’s so impersonal. Two is a nicer house (though why keep matching the carpets to the paintwork in the bedrooms?) but looks cramped like all new builds, and I don’t like the angled wall in the kitchen.
I have to say I don’t like either - both look very impersonal and bland. I like older houses though so I’m probably not the best judge! On the upside they are both big and I like the massive upstairs floor in house 2.

CrotchetyQuaver · 16/10/2025 16:04

How wide/tall is the archway to the garage on house 1? Would you be able to get your cars through there?

Favouritefruits · 16/10/2025 16:06

Yeh not keen on either, both have flaws! But if you like them then that’s all that matters. I’d go with 1 over 2 because of the garden I hate corner plots.

Bluevelvetsofa · 16/10/2025 16:06

I don’t like the cladding, or whatever it is on the exterior of house 1. The kitchen would need redoing for me and I don’t like the wardrobe doors. I’d want to redo at least one of the bathrooms too.

I like the exterior of house 2, but don’t like the plot it sits on.
The kitchen is very stylish, but probably appeals to a limited market. Is pic 6 the winding bit between the garage and the main house? What would it be used for?
The blue and purple carpets would have to go very quickly.

I don’t think I’d go for either of them, but perhaps there’s something more appealing in them that you’ve seen OP.

SpudsAndCarrots · 16/10/2025 16:10

I prefer 2, unless you need the 5th bedroom.
Nicer layout and looks more modern and light. 1 looks like it'll need a bit of tidying up and doesn't look as spacious.

Favouritefruits · 16/10/2025 16:10

This is in your area, needs updating like the other two houses but much better layout and gardens in my opinion.

oldFoolMe · 16/10/2025 16:11

Prefer the kitchen and floors in house 2 so for me I wouldn’t need to do a lot straight away and that’s important to me. But that’s just my preference!
