Opinions on these two houses?

Posting here for traffic, apologies! My friend did similar recently and found the advice really helpful (these houses are in a similar area).

Which do you prefer out of these two houses? Any comments or observations welcome.

House 1:

House 2:

https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/165007046#/?channel=RES_BUY

I think we are edging towards house 1, as the plot is better (driveway parking and doesn’t open on to street) but there is a footpath nearby which gets quite busy as near a shopping centre. Not sure if anyone has experience of living near similar?

House #1 every time, it's bigger, I prefer the layout (so sensible with bathrooms on every floor) and it doesn't look overlooked so would feel more private (unless the road at the front/back is super busy).

House #2 looks cramped, some of the rooms are a weird shape, there aren't enough windows & they're all too small, it's overlooked from every angle, corner plot means the garden and garage are small & at odd angles, plus being on a corner means you get all the traffic noise and pedestrians walking past your windows all the time. Lacks privacy.

Ladybugheart · 16/10/2025 16:12

1 without a doubt. You could make it look much nicer than it is

GreyChicken · 16/10/2025 16:12

#1 definitely!

Bikergran · 16/10/2025 16:15

I just look at the floorplans and the main external photo, as decor etc can be changed. I think you'd do better with property 1.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 16/10/2025 16:18

2 if I had to but stuck on the corner would put me off.

Ginandslimlinetonics · 16/10/2025 16:22

I am shocked by some posters saying that the houses are both awful.
So , so many people would give their eye teeth to be in a position to have either!
So many cant afford a house.

Op Id say the first one for flexibility if space- but either are fab .

Enjoy !

bloodypowerbi · 16/10/2025 16:27

They're both in Swindon, therefore neither.

*I live in Swindon. Would choose 1 if I had to choose.

Teathecolourofcreosote · 16/10/2025 16:33

House one. Although I agree it looks very cold at the moment but this wouldn't be hard to improve.

Things on the negative list.

I'd want to check if the bits over the access are actually cold. It's modern and should have decent insulation but this isn't always the case and that room could suffer.

Three of the five bedrooms are very small. This isn't necessarily a negative as few people need them all as bedrooms. If you have two kids and both work from home it matters less and is actually a good use of space.

There doesn't seem to be any storage. Where do coats and shoes go? Perhaps it's just not well shown on the plans but it seems lacking in a house of that size.

Personally I like the one a PP added much better but as I don't know the area this may be out location wise.

childrenwatchthefools · 16/10/2025 16:34

@Ginandslimlinetonicsthe OP asked for opinions. Are we not allowed a negative opinion on something just because other people can’t afford the thing we are talking about? That’s ridiculous. Tbh I couldn’t afford either house, they’re both out of my budget, but I can still have an opinion as to whether I like them or not - and I don’t. There’s nothing wrong with that.

FOJN · 16/10/2025 16:38

I'd choose house 1. The situation is better and the space looks more versatile. In house 2 they have added an awful extension with a kitchen which will date quickly and the downstairs toilet opens into the kitchen which I didn't think was legal in a house of that age but maybe the rules are different if you are extending the house.

Butterflywings84 · 16/10/2025 16:39

Houses are so personal. We love character houses with high ceilings so these don’t appeal at all. However that doesn’t mean they are awful per se. What do you feel when you walk in? Feels like you are going for a practical decision - do either of them give you THAT feeling?

MarmiteMustard · 16/10/2025 16:39

I wasn't keen on house 1 til I saw house 2. I prefer the kitchen way more on House 2 but that's where it's appeal ends.

One key thing I did notice is house 1 is a lot of natural light and house 2 has every bloody light on in the pictures so it's quite a dull house, the decor is obviously changeable but what's the weird wardrobe in the hall way? Plus one of the bedrooms is extremely small.

The garden in House 1 is less maintenance and easy access too.

House 1 needs some proper decor, character and personality though.

Randomchat · 16/10/2025 16:44

House 1 has a much more sensible plot I think. You can change things about the house if you have enough money but you can't change the plot.

AutumnnotFall · 16/10/2025 16:47

Favouritefruits · 16/10/2025 16:06

Yeh not keen on either, both have flaws! But if you like them then that’s all that matters. I’d go with 1 over 2 because of the garden I hate corner plots.

Agree, I dislike parts of both. House 1: smaller bedrooms, but I prefer the outside and uniqueness, as well as the layout. House 2 is less work, but I dislike the closed in shiny grey kitchen, and corner plot with a cold looking building & garden, imho. It is highly subjective though. If I had the choice I would choose House 1.

MikeRafone · 16/10/2025 16:47

House 1 is better than house 2 imo

house 2 is exposed on a corner, with traffic being close to the front windows. It also has a kitchen with a seating area around a sink - why would anyone do that? Alog with very odd shaped rooms and seems cramped

House 1 has potential, it has a walk way to the side and that is very different from a road with traffic. Plus with people walking passed gives extra security. House one you could decorate really well to give warmth and character, fairly easily and the 5th bedroom you could alter the door to make a dressing room.

House one also has the advantage of 2 lounge areas - which with teen children is ideal for when they want some of their own space and you want an adult sitting room. If yo have younger children it can be a toy room come lounge for now and change as they grow.

Rockchick01 · 16/10/2025 16:50

Not keen on either as I don’t like linked detached. House 2 is too close to the road and looks like it doesn’t have much room for 2 cars.
If I had to choose it’d probably be house 1 if only for the parking.

Summerbay23 · 16/10/2025 16:51

Favouritefruits · 16/10/2025 16:10

This is in your area, needs updating like the other two houses but much better layout and gardens in my opinion.

www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/167265806#/?channel=RES_BUY

Agree with this, this house feels much nicer, more spacious, lovely garden and bags of potential to spruce up and make it your own.

myheadsjustmush · 16/10/2025 16:53

I don't really like either of them - but if I had to choose, I would go for house 1.

The second one looks like it has been built as a "oohh we have got a bit of land spare - what can we cram on to it...." kind of house.

shampop · 16/10/2025 16:53

Definitely 1. Much better plot, more spacious etc. I think it looks really nice with the collyweston stone, I would want to change and update kitchen/bathroom etc but I’m surprised people saying it’s awful?

I dislike house 2. Bad plot, really awkwardly positioned, rooms look a strange shape? Just has an overall cramped and claustrophobic feel to it.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 16/10/2025 16:54

pikkumyy77 · 16/10/2025 15:49

Honestly I agree with those who say both are awful. But 1over 2 if I had to pick because being on that odd corner with so much street exposure feels worse than the first house even though the first house looks like a covert abattoir.

What an odd thing to say!

House 1 is bigger with a better plot. I know nothing about the area though. The proximity of the footpath and the seclusion may make it more attractive to burglars so I'd want to address that. Good that other than you and your immediate neighbours there's no traffic going past.

youalright · 16/10/2025 16:56

I love the decor of number 2 but would pick 1 for space, shape, garden and parking

Alittlefrustrated · 16/10/2025 16:56

House 1.
It looks spacious and as you say is a far superior plot, with privacy, good garden and parking.
It's also pretty much a blank canvas. Nothing offensive or impossible to live with until you get sorted.
There would be nil chance of me buying House 2. with that path right outside my windows. Garden also looks crap.Parking situation is unclear.

Ddakji · 16/10/2025 16:57

Number 1. Don’t really like 3 stories.

Cantseetreesforthewood · 16/10/2025 17:00

Floor plan of 1 is awful, with living space and bedrooms mixed on the middle floor.

Plot of 2 isn't great - we struggled to sell a house with the garage at the back, and I wouldn't do that again readily.

If I had to buy one of them, house 2. But ideally keep looking.

Rubyroses3 · 16/10/2025 17:01

Number 1 because of the garden.
