Opinions on these two houses?

Posting here for traffic, apologies! My friend did similar recently and found the advice really helpful (these houses are in a similar area).

Which do you prefer out of these two houses? Any comments or observations welcome.

House 1:

House 2:

I think we are edging towards house 1, as the plot is better (driveway parking and doesn’t open on to street) but there is a footpath nearby which gets quite busy as near a shopping centre. Not sure if anyone has experience of living near similar?

That one looks small downstairs with the internal garage. Nice space at the back though.

WithIcePlease · 16/10/2025 21:16

House 1 over your more recent find imo
I really like it

They’re both not nice. Non existent or depressing garden. Depressing grey inside.

The last one posted is lovely. Although needs a bit of work.

Agreed. There must be a lot of nicer properties in Swindon than those two.

Zov · 16/10/2025 21:28

Sorry @Henesseyus I have to agree with many others on this thread, that they're both something I would never go for. Don't like either one. The first one is better than the second, but they're both bland and greige IMO.

We’ve ruled out House 2 this evening, and also seen a house which was listed a while ago which caught our eye (prior to us being on the market) has returned to Rightmove.

Any thoughts? It’s again by a path which is the only real concern…and side access to garden is by walking round the side of the house.

Edited

This is better than the other 2 IMO. But it's very close to the house next to it. How would you even repair/paint/get to the fence? Or do any repairs on the side where the other house is? I'm not a fan of 'detached' houses that are so close together that you can stand between them, stretch your arms out a bit, and touch both houses! In this case, the two houses look even closer together than that!

This is in your area, needs updating like the other two houses but much better layout and gardens in my opinion.

Yes I like Option Three! I like this game of Location, Location, Location!

Timeforabitofpeace · 16/10/2025 22:02

Neither. 1 for preference.

Silverbirchleaf · 16/10/2025 22:07

I’d go for one as has more space. House 2 has very small windows.

Silverbirchleaf · 16/10/2025 22:08

No 3 is the best.

Irenesortof · 16/10/2025 22:08

Neither appeals to me and I’d worry about the render lasting. But I prefer older houses.

GeneralChatter · 16/10/2025 22:28

Swindon - avoid the P’s and the Hill’s.
Penhill, Pinehurst, Parks.
all the hills in Old Town.

seems like you are focused off Thamesdown Drive. North Swindon area.

having lived in a few parts of Swindon, I would say that North was a preference but now having moved to East I am very settled into old age surrounded by bungalows!

as for the houses added, 1 is okay 5/10. 2 is a no-go all wrong and trying too hard, bad plot and awful design.
the one added in the chat was beautiful but not the right area for what I assume you are looking for (assume kids schools might be a big factor?). Your 3rd house looks good. Much better layout, design and land.

good luck (:

ProfessionalWhimsicalSkidaddler · 16/10/2025 22:28

Number one is missing something - maybe you need to make it a home. I think one is the better plot for parking and looks good. Two straight onto the pavement is not very private but you could decorate the outside beautifully at Christmas. Two is nicer inside and cheaper but I guess that’s location? Or something I’ve missed. I’d prob have to flip a coin.

Mandylovescandy · 16/10/2025 22:29

I also don't like the over 3 floors. I probably would pick house 1 for the utility room, bigger plot

MinnieCauldwell · 16/10/2025 22:51

I don't think I would buy a house with a private road. Are you responsible for maintenance?

bluevelvetears · 16/10/2025 23:47

I don't like either but if forced to choose it's 2.

myglowupera · 17/10/2025 02:10

I don’t like house number 3. It’s got lovely outdoor space at the back but that’s about it.

opencecilgee · 17/10/2025 03:13

House 1 becaUse garden slightly better

house 2 has a weird extension

opencecilgee · 17/10/2025 03:14

Three is best (if you can afford to bring into 21 century) kitchen etc

Bobbyelvis4ever · 17/10/2025 08:01

Of the 2 in Thamesdown Drive, I’d say 1 is better. The area around Tortworth Road is a nightmare for parking.

I’d also not go for Rodbourne Cheney. The last one looks ok, it’s probably a case of what feels best for you.

Confused3456 · 17/10/2025 09:04

Without question house no. 1 as it’s a better position. My only question is, is the gate leading to the path only for that house or can others use it?

StinkyCheeseMoose · 17/10/2025 10:44

House number three is by far the best and a good price too.

The main draw back is proximity to the neighbours, but that is partially mitigated by the big garden and space on the other side.

If you are happy with the small living rooms, I think this one is promising.
