Delivery driver leaving rat poison in my hallway

AIBU to complain to Amazon about their delivery driver today? It's really freaked me out.
I was home during my lunch break today and was in the kitchen seeing to our new weeny rescue pup. I heard the front door open and a male voice and thought it was my other half home early from work.
I went into the garden to see to the pup and when I came back in I saw 2 Amazon parcels on the floor in the hallway and I then had delivery notifications on my phone saying 'parcel handed to resident'.
My OH was no where to be seen and didn't come home til much later so it wasn't him.
I then concluded that the driver opened my front door and put the parcels there without even knocking or leaving them in the safe place as is noted.
I'm really freaked out that someone opened the front door...one thing is he could of let the pup out who isn't allowed out yet as too young and also one of the boxes contained rat poison which the pup then could of gotten hold of.
I'm guessing it wasn't our usual guy as he knows where to leave them and I've never had anyone just open the door before.
I can't see any way to complain to Amazon online but I can escalate it to a phone call.
I guess lesson learned to lock the door either way but as I was going back out shortly I don't usually bother.
But surely that's just so unprofessional?

Lock your door - cheap lesson imo

sosorryimnotsorry · 14/10/2025 22:50

YANBU to complain. I would. I keep my front door locked for this specific reason.

sittingonabeach · 14/10/2025 22:50

So many people don’t lock their doors - why?

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 14/10/2025 22:50

If you were outside at the back you may not have heard the driver knocking, but it may have been obvious you were in. No harm done this time, but lock the door in future. The driver probably didn't know you'd ordered rat poison whereas you did. I wouldn't like someone letting themselves in so would make sure it didn't happen again. I wouldn't bother complaining either.

sittingonabeach · 14/10/2025 22:52

What are your instructions for delivery?

There is a similar thread about Amazon driver trying to open a door. Seems like quite a few do this rather than leaving it outside. Just lock your doors!

ShenandoahRiver · 14/10/2025 22:52

Your title makes it sound as if he deliberately left rat poison in your hallway.

minipie · 14/10/2025 22:53

Sorry I’m just 😮 at your unlocked front door. Maybe the delivery driver assumed you’d left it open exactly for that purpose?

It's hard to get past his different the actual story is to what your headline suggests

youalright · 14/10/2025 22:57

This pretty much same thread was written a couple of days ago. Lock your doors. And pay attention to your delivery tracker. I don't understand why people dont lock their doors someone could be in and out within seconds without you realising and your car keys and car are gone. Or even worse a serial killer or rapist could just wander in. Its absolutely idiotic not to lock your doors.

Tetchypants · 14/10/2025 22:57

I think be grateful if it was a delivery driver and not a burglar or escaped convict or axe murder. That’s not to say I agree he should’ve walked into your house, though he probably just quickly put the parcels down and closed the door. No harm done but lesson learned: if you shut your door just lock it, takes one second and then you and your belongings are safe.

Springflowersyay · 14/10/2025 22:58

If you have a puppy and are ordering rat poison for delivery to your home, it’s your responsibility to know where it is.

With a small puppy, I’d have things like that delivered to a locker for collection.

We live rurally and both myself and OH are self employed and keep a lot of our work stuff in our vehicles on the drive so in-between jobs we are often and out hence not locking the front door if we are back and to loading our vehicles ect.
Either way...surely the guy should of knocked first?!

If the poison was distributed in a way that could fit through your letterbox, how angry would you be? If you ordered rat poison I’d expect you to be on high alert personally!

onwards2025 · 14/10/2025 23:00

He called out to get your attention and trying the door to deliver is a very common thing for a courier to do. If you don't want the possibility of a delivery driver opening your door then keep it locked, the onus is on you to lock the door or put a note out. Complaining would to me be a massive overreaction. He was there to deliver your parcel, which is precisely what he did and no harm has been done.

GarlicPound · 14/10/2025 23:01

Wow, two Amazon drivers letting themselves in through unlocked front doors in two days!

The obvious replies are:
Lock your door
Check your delivery instructions.

A lot of people want their parcels left inside the front door, having some sort of porch/vestibule arrangement, or simply because stuff gets stolen from outside. They leave their doors unlocked when expecting a delivery. Drivers have no telepathic insight into whether your door's unlocked on purpose or not.

Yeah I get that as as I've just replied to someone else we live rurally and if home in-between jobs we are in and out to vehicles several times loading equipment ect.
I don't get delivery tracking except to say it's arriving on that day.
When we are home for the evening obviously we lock the doors

I genuinely don't understand why so many MNetters refuse to lock their front doors.

What is the point of it?

Such a stark contrast between them and those who can't even bring themselves to open their doors!

It wouldn't fit through the letterbox and my instructions are leave it in the safe place. I would not except some doing Thier professional job to just open someone's door without knocking and leave parcels there on the floor. They never have before.

It’s difficult. My settings say to leave in the porch and mist do but then sometimes I think they are really rushed and haven’t time to check so they might open the porch door or front door or ring the bell or dump on the doorstep…
Our front door is always unlocked, well, we do generally lock at night at about midnight then son unlocks it for work at 6am. But we have a dog that barks. But also we have 4 kids, grown up now, but as teens they would be in and out so keeping it unlocked made sense!
Got to be honest though, most people who visit us just walk in. The kids’ friends always just wandered in.

I guess it depends where you live. We have a very very low crime rate. Small village street and neighbours all look out for each other. The council changed the doors a few years ago so they don't automatically lock when shut so if we are just home for a few minutes in-between jobs and back and forth to our vehicles we don't lock the door.
Once we are in and obviously if we are out doors are locked.

I'm sorry but my instructions are to leave in safe place. Not 'just let yourself in'. He could have let the dog out. A knock is the generally acceptable way of getting someone's attention at front door level.

Do you not know what your OH’s voice sounds like? 🤔

I heard the door open and then a male voice to assumed it to be my OH as wouldn't expect anyone else to just be opening my front door!
It wasnt very loud and when my OH didn't appear I assumed he had gone back to his van for something.
I was distracted by letting the puppy out in my lunch break. It was only when I saw the parcels and that OH van wasn't there I realised the Amazon delivery driver had just opened the door and left the boxes there on the floor.
