Support vs Laugh

AIBU to think that the new "Support" emoji is just as likely to be abused and used sarcastically as the abolished laughter emoji?

OP posts:

I hadn’t noticed it until then but I like it. I don’t see how or why it would be used sarcastically.

BuffetTheDietSlayer · 14/10/2025 18:03

Yes, I was thinking same earlier. It’s easy to use it as an ‘aww diddums’/tiny violin response.

Brightbluesomething · 14/10/2025 18:06

I did wonder what the bunch of flowers was. I won’t be using it. Bring back the laughing emoji.

Why?

Yes, that's exactly what I mean.

Why?

Because people don't tend to give flowers sarcastically?

IvedoneitagainhaventI · 14/10/2025 18:15

I thought it was a really good idea when the Spport emoji was suggested on Site stuff.
I'm glad MN have actually introduced it.

I'm trying to work out how it can be abused.

And no they definitely shouldn't bring back the laugh emoji. I'm assuming most of the MNers who keep harping on about bringing it back are the ones that abused it in the first place

Don't be so insulting & ridiculous!

Personally I liked being able to show appreciation for someone's witty remark, and it was also nice when posters showed they found something I had written funny. I'm pretty sure I didn't ever use it sarcastically.

But unfortunately the 'mean girls' spoiled it.

Well you can still show appreciation of a witty or funny post by quoting it back or tagging the poster and actually telling them you found their post amusing. Many many posters do that .

And I'm glad you didn't misuse the laugh emoji but many posters did. They used it very maliciously and caused a lot of distress.

Catssuddenlyappear · 14/10/2025 19:29

I think it's as lame as hell that you can't see the reactions to other posts, particularly if it's one that's gone down like a sack of shit.

I don't think that only having quote posting as the way to express disapproval works either, sometimes it would be nice just to laugh/anger react and get on with your day, secure in the knowledge that the poster knows that you hated their post ❤️‍🔥

This would mainly be for posters who don't read the thread and just want to put the boot in, especially when the OP is vulnerable

Then your assumption is wrong.

Why would you need to laugh secretly though? There's still a laugh emoji you can reply with.

EchoedSilence · 14/10/2025 19:36

I think there are more mean girls in plain sight on MN than secret mean girls.

Well if you weren't one of the ones who misused it have you no empathy or sympathy with those who were the target of the mockery and derision?

You can still show your appreciation of amusing posts without the laugh emoji reaction.

So why do you want to give the malicious posters the tool to cause others distress?

Because I don't think the whole of MN should lose something that many posters want back because of the actions of a few.

There are very many vulnerable people who post on MN. A lot in a very bad place mentally.

You obviously don't care about the damage to these people.

Just so long as you get the emoji back. Even though there are alternative ways of showing appreciation of amusing posts.

I suppose you are aware that a suicidal poster was mocked with the laugh emoji? But hey what does that matter?

I find the tone and accusations in your posts more offensive than a secret wrongly placed laugh reaction.

But everyone can see and judge your comments,so there is that.
