DD4 is at preschool/nursery full time this year and brings a book home every night. The book is totally her choice and we always read it at bed time.

I've never questioned her choices, last year I read the Usborne first bible stories version of Jonah and the Whale including the references to God without comment, the next week I read one where the boy had two dads the same way. I read the really boring one about different types of tractors as if it was the most fascinating book ever. We even bought our own copies of the Oi Frog series and The Colour Monster because she brought them home so often.

Today for the third time this term she has brought home "Bob the Bogey Fairy" it is awful! It makes me gag! I don't want to read about "scrummy snot you've munched for lunch", "icky sticky flicky" ones and "cluster chunks" the words are disgusting and the pictures make it worse! If she brings it home again I'm going to have to refuse to read it!

She’s got eclectic taste!

I remember my god daughter going through a period of wanting to be read a first aid manual which wasn’t for the faint hearted. If your child enjoys it and it is helping with their comprehension skills then I think you have to suck it up I’m afraid.*

*I mean reading the book, not sucking up the bogey like people seem to like to do on the bus when they can’t be bothered to locate a tissue!

God I bloody hate Bob the Bogey Fairy! It's so hard to get through, and I hate all the pictures and the story is crap.

I tried telling her that Bob the Bogey Fairy would come get her if she didn't stop picking her nose. She replied that he couldn't because "Bob lives in fairyland and we live in real-land".

The story is awful but not as bad as "Beekeeping for Bears", but at least that doesn't have all the descriptions of different types of snot!

Hmm maybe I might revise my opinion if Bob is not being useful! I remember reading Pepper Pig and dropping halfway through to say to my GD: “Erm you are aware that Pepper is a brat aren’t you? I don’t think she’s a good role model!”

Magenta82 · 13/10/2025 21:18

Peppa Pig is a rude brat, but at least you can have a conversation about how not to behave when you read/watch her. I honestly can't come up with one redeeming feature for Bob the Bogey Fairy, at least the tractor one was educational!

Go to the library and chose some good books every week so you have more options?

Oh sorry you are right it is spelled Peppa (another way in which she is annoying!) That’s a fair point if there are no redeeming qualities and if Bob’s lack of moral direction is actually encouraging nose explorations!

I used to love Fungus the Bogeyman when I was a kid, I bought a copy for my kids who were just terrified of it!

Today she brought back an Indian version of Rapunzel, the story looks the same but the pictures are very colourful with Indian characters wearing traditional Indian dress. Looks like bedtime tonight will be much better!
