and be struck dumb that a 12 year old thinks that a 119 GHD set is essential- she wants them for her birthday.

well thousands of sets have been sold so your 12 yr old is not on her own on this one

DarthVader · 04/06/2008 19:28

try the babyliss version around £30 - gets good reviews

CountessDracula · 04/06/2008 19:28

you are meant to get them round your hair, not your head!

do you have curly hair?!!

LambethLil · 04/06/2008 19:31

LOL- I am almost prepared to convinced, but am depressed that a bright beautiful pre teenager wants that much grooming! (scratches unkempt bird's nest).

I love curls. Don't understand the trend for poker straight hair. However, I am in the minority on this one...

LynetteScavo · 04/06/2008 19:32

Are birthday pressents about getting essentials? She really wants them (so do I- I have Babyliss). She will never forgive you if you dont get her the GHD's.

Mines not, neither is DS1's. I can see the effect is lovely. I guess there are 2 issues here- that she thinks its reasonable to ask for such an expensive present, and what said present represents.

Not curly that is.
NDTH- my issue is that at 12 she should have better things to do with her time. Did you spend as long on grooming aged 12 as you do now?

LynetteScavo · 04/06/2008 19:48

I spent a lot longer grooming my hair when I was 12 than I do now!

I had loads of time before school, now I have 3 DC's to get ready. When they've left home I shall have great hair every day. (If I'm not bauld by then!)

Just because she doesn't use them every day,(when she gets them) doesn't mean they are just a fad.

I remember being 12!

savoycabbage · 04/06/2008 20:00

£120 is a lot to spend on straighteners for a twelve year old (but they are great). I would be inclined towards giving her some cash towards saving up for them I agree with Lynette though that birthday presents are not about practicality. Also she will probably have them forever.

onelittlelion · 04/06/2008 20:02

I love my GHD's but I had some cordless Morphy Richards ones which were fab too. My neice got some lovely pink Morphy Richard ones fomn their offers online and said they were good too. £120 seems a lot but guess depends how much you usually spend on a birthday present too as there are worst things!

Divvy · 04/06/2008 20:08

FHI's are the same but alot cheaper and can be got from ebay for around £50

They come in pink too

My2Weegirls · 04/06/2008 20:12

i have a mass of frizz and ghd's are the only straightners i've found that work when i do it...and i have used a lot of straightners in my quest to be frizz free!

could you do a deal with her that you will pay for half and she pays the other half - either from birthday money/pocket money/chores?

chocchild · 04/06/2008 20:13

Perhaps give her enough cash for a cheaper set and ask her to save the rest. But the truth is, as already mentioned, the others are nowhere near as good and are just not worth buying so in the long term, the Ghd's are a good investment.

scootermum · 04/06/2008 20:17

GHD's do less damage to the hair because they are more effective thus you need to use them for less time.
(Well thats what I tell myself anyway to justfy the cost)
My neice is 14 but she has been mad on hair and makeup and what not since she was about 11.Quite scary but I think they grow up younger these days >>rocks in rocking chair, Granny stylee

2point4kids · 04/06/2008 20:19

I've got very curly hair and I like it curly.
I do have a pair of GHDs though and have had them for years now. I straighten my hair once in a blue moon and they are fantastic. No other straighteners do anything like as good a job.

If that amount is what you would normally spend on her and GHDs are what she really wants then get them, even if its not what you would want as a present.

TsarChasm · 04/06/2008 20:23

I read the other day that curls are back in in a big way.

Shame I was enjoying the straight hair thing cos mine is.

Hope I don't have to resort to any more 80's perms. If curls are going to be that 'in' I'm waving a white flag of defeat right now. I can't go through all that malarky again.

LynetteScavo · 04/06/2008 20:35

Curls are back. Could someone please explain this to haridressers? They seem to hav espent so long perfecting the stright look that they seem reluctant to let it go.

SlackSally · 04/06/2008 21:00

I have personally found that GHDs have no equal (luckily they were a present).

I also LOVE curly hair, wish I had beautiful ringlets (as I did when I was a toddler.

However, my hair is now somewhere between straight and wavy. Not wavy with a gentle curl but wavy in random, very dry looking kinks. It honestly does look bloody awful.

Hence for work/out I straighten.

Would def not straighten proper curls, though.
