and be struck dumb that a 12 year old thinks that a 119 GHD set is essential- she wants them for her birthday.

If you get her the GHD's they will last for ages! I got mine 5 years ago I think - well worth the money and if she has got reasonably straight hair she won't have to use them every day. If you can afford them go for it - it will be a good investment (and you could you use them too!)

imo, and i know straightners i have been using them since about 12 myself if not before, saks do much better ones and they are much cheaper. they heat to same temp as ghd, have never been recalled due to the fact that they have been known to blow up and are heavier so grip the hair better. every one i know with ghd's always commentys on how straight my hair goes and i have naturally very wavy hair.

dont get them in store though their website [http://www.sakstogo.co.uk/ here] does them loads cheaper, kif she has long hair the jumbo ones are best if not then go for the thin ones.

Jackstini · 04/06/2008 21:23

Even if curls are back GHDs can produce the most fabulous ringlets as well as waves, flicks, poker straight..... She will never need another hair styling appliance!
If you know she is likely to get bday money, agree you will put in half and so can she?

LambethLil · 04/06/2008 22:10

Hmm looks like the consensus is I'm being unreasonable.... TBH its the principle- its such a lot of money. We got her an ipod shuffle last year, not the Nano she wanted and she barely hid her disappointment- I guess I'm shocked she's upped the ante and sad that such things are so important to her. Back to my muesli knitting I guess.

hair straighteners changed my life, seriously! i went all the way throughhigh school with very, very crap hair that had naural waves , not curls. which basically meant my hair had a life of its own. it was a revelation when a hairdresser first straightened my hair, it could be tamed!, went out afterwards to get my own set to maintain the look. wish to goodness had them when i was growing up, would have done so much for my confidence. 30 squid should get a decent set, as long as they're ceramic with a temperature control.

CocoaCloset · 05/06/2008 00:25

I can't imagine what I went out like without GHD's - they are definitely an investment

Tinker · 05/06/2008 00:38

I've been straightening my hair (not constantly!) for 20 years I've just realised. If straighteners had existed when I was 12 I would have begged and pleaded for them. Frizzy, randomly wavy hair is not an asset. Get She straighteners; half teh price of ghds and exactly the same.

BonkersHonkers · 05/06/2008 11:32

You can get GHD's online for a lot cheaper than £120. I think the going rate is about £80. Just type GHD into Google and you will find loads of hair websites that sell them.

LazyLinePainterJane · 05/06/2008 11:39

She should save up for them, and put birthday money towards it.

DirtySexyMummy · 05/06/2008 11:44

Buying GHD's is an investment. You can either spend £50 now, and £120 later, or spend £120 now and never have to buy straighteners (or curling tongs) ever again. I've had my GHD's for 9 years, and they work as good now as they did on the first day.

I read your post about getting her a shuffle instead of a nano - there is a huge difference, firstly shuffles have no screen, which to me, and obviously your DD, is a big problem. I can see why she was upset, I love my iPod, but would hate to have a shuffle.

Don't make the same mistake again - get her GHD's!

Oh - and bonkers - if you can find them for £80 please link to that site - I've never heard of getting them for £80.

DirtySexyMummy · 05/06/2008 11:45

Oh - and FWIW - I used to use them for straightening and now I use them for curling.

DirtySexyMummy · 05/06/2008 11:48

here is a good deal - £119 and you get a bag and some products.

here are some I managed to find for £63.74.

Don't understand why these ones are so cheap, but they seem to be authentic.

Or, for £79, you could get this one is a lovely bag with loads of extras.

HTH

llynnnn · 05/06/2008 17:33

FHI straighteners are exactly the same (however I probably wouldnt have wanted an 'unknown' brand when i was 12!
I have thick frizzy hair and my straightners are my fave possession! I think I wouldve been happier at school if my hair had looked 'normal' and straight like all my friends and not big, thick, out of control and frizzy!

they are worth the money!

DeeRiguer · 05/06/2008 17:38

crikey my hair is poker straight i didnt know it was 'in'...
it was curling tongs when i was 12! they just fell out
i think 12 is okay to start tinkering with your image and how you loook
they are expensive, but from what folks say they sound worth it..
can everyone who normally gives gift put in to help? with you putting in what you would have spent get others to give little towards them? she might just get em then?.. and you can try them out too!
am quite intrigued myself now

DarthVader · 05/06/2008 17:50

Try Babyliss - GHDs used to be the best but that was ages ago, others are now just as good.

Also your dd might only use them a handful of times in reality

MrsGuyOfGisbourne · 05/06/2008 17:53

I totally understand where your DD is coming from. When I was 12, my curly (frizzy) hair was the bane of my life - I often think I WOULD have been discovered by Hollywood if we had had straightners in those days .I certainly would have had more confidence. Believe it or not, when I was 14 and went for a Saturday job in BHS, I was RELIEVED when the person who interviewed me had hair like mine, because i geniuinely thought it would stop me gettin the job . Moy mother who had straight hair could not understand why it would be an issue.
Sorry, may seem shallow/inexplicable but it really matters.
Many (ahem) years later, I have a very happy life, enough money, lovely family etc, BUT I still feel better, and do my job better when my hair is straight and shiny.
If you can afford the GHDs, please get them. if not, like the other posters have said, give her some money and she can save for the rest.

DirtySexyMummy · 05/06/2008 19:55

I really have to add again - None of the other brands are as good as GHD's. No matter how many people say they are just as good - they really, really are not.

The iPod situation will happen again unless you get her the ones she wants, not a cheapo version.

u really should try FHI, they are EXACTLY the same, honestly!!
same temperature, same style, same ceramic plates etc etc

madmuggle · 06/06/2008 11:57

I think maybe your daughter should learn the value of money by being forced to pay for her own. If she wants to be blinded by a label she should at last pay for it by herself. 12 is far too young to be insisting on such extravagant presents.
