To buy a qashqui?

Posting for traffic, and really hoping that I might be able to get some opinions. My last car, and Nissan Micra, has died, and I’ve made the decision not to replace her with another Micra. I am hoping to go slightly bigger, and have been looking at the qashqui. I wondered if anybody had any opinions about it, particularly in terms of space, reliability, and economy!

And also whether you have a diesel or a petrol.

I’d love some opinions, also does anybody have dogs and have a quashqui and therefore have a dog guard, I’ve done quite a lot of research, and I really fancy one, and tend to like Nissans as a whole.

I just find the whole process of car searching really overwhelming, and it feels like the website‘s always tell you all the good bits!

Thanks ☺️

I have a quasqai, have had 2 and also it's bigger brother, the Xtrail. I find it's reliable, a nice little runner, mines petrol, (semi hybrid) easy to drive. Doesn't use loads of petrol but then I WFH so not doing excessive miles. Not too small, quite spacious inside. Only issue is that the lithium ion battery has had to be changed 3 times. Luckily, it's under warranty so no charge. I've also got 2 big dogs but they sit on the back seats. They're a bit squashed in the back but it's doable.

Thanks so much for this, what is lithium iron and battery? Is that just the usual car battery, or is that to do with it being hybrid? Also, if you don’t mind me asking how big are your dogs, our dogs are small/medium! Think cockerpoo sized!

Sorry, I didn’t mean that to read like I didn’t see that you said you had two big dogs, I was just wondering what defined big!

We have had a qashqai for 8 years now. Have two kids and all the stuff that goes with it. It’s a great car - ours is petrol, automatic. Easy to drive, looks nice, comfortable, spacious. It doesn’t feel like a small car to me.

TheoriginalMrsDarcy · 13/10/2025 08:24

There's an extra battery sat underneath the drivers seat in addition to the regular battery u have to run your car. I think because it's a semi hybrid, so stores up electric for you to help power your car so in effect, using less petrol. I think it auto generates itself as I don't need to plug it in. To replace it can be around £1500 to £2000 but mine was under warranty. My dogs are labs, much bigger than your Cokerpoos so yours should fit in comfortably.

Thank you!! This is very helpful! It feels like on paper the right fit!

I have a Juke and my dog walker has a Qashqai...both excellent cars. (I used to have a Micra too). Mine's a diesel and the fuel economy is fantastic plus it is very nippy.... And my large dog fits the boot perfectly. Not small cars tho, even the Juke is quite chunky!

MyIvyGrows · 13/10/2025 08:34

I have a diesel, about ten years old now and still going well although it’s had a new exhaust and a few battery changes like a PP has mentioned. Spacious and I like driving it. The back seats fold flat so you can pack a lot in if you’ve been over-enthusiastic at IKEA.

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 13/10/2025 08:43

Thanks so much for all opinions. It’s much appreciated! On a diesel what sort of miles to the gallon would you say is realistic to get, again, I’ve been all over honest John, but I’m always a bit disbelieving of any online MPG reports, although I accept that this is also online, but it just feels a bit more personal!!

Economy is massively important because of the amount of miles we do. Probably have reaching about 10,000 -15000 a year

We had a Quasqui for 9 years and loved it. Then the engine broke.
Cost us nearly £5k to replace the engine and we never trusted it again.
If you get one get the timing belt changed way ahead of the 60k miles it says to. Ours broke when it had only done 45k miles.
Now upgraded to new electric Ford Explorer which is absolutely gorgeous but expensive.

Depends on what kind of age you’re looking at. Older ones aren’t bad, newer ones are utter dog shit.

Liondoesntsleepatnight · 13/10/2025 08:54

Just got my second Qashqai, first was diesel, great for motorway driving, did 10k miles a year. Latest is hybrid, love it.

I have a cockerpoo, he did sits in his seat, strapped in on back seat (looking like a king)

Isn’t Nissan considered one of the least reliable car manufacturers? WhatCar always seems to absolutely lambast them!

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 13/10/2025 08:56

We’re looking at one between 2019 and 2021 but not younger than that!

Thanks for the timing belt tip!

I didn’t know this! We’re a family of Nissans and always found them the best out of the other brands we’ve had over the years! 😱

There’s a bit at the end about reliability of Nissan in general (28th out of the 31 featured)! @TheBeaTgoeson1 - hope that’s helpful!

Doesbt that deped on the age of it? MY DD used to have one but I don't think it had extra battery,

Are they any good when do so ilitte mileage? Most diesel sare more worthwhile when you do a decent amount of miles

BertieBotts · 13/10/2025 09:13

No idea what the space is like for dogs - I know they are a nightmare for child seats if you need to fit multiple, particularly if you need three.

BoredZelda · 13/10/2025 09:15

We loved our Qashqai. It never had to go to the garage once in the 4 years we had it.

The only thing to watch is that the boot lid has quite a slope in it so won’t be great if you have big dogs. You can take your dog along to the showroom and try it out though.

Seeline · 13/10/2025 09:18

I hated mine!

Very cramped interior, especially in the rear seats. My teens were really cramped.
Awkward shaped boot made it difficult to fit stuff in.
Random warning lights kept coming on the dash - the garage said everything was fine and to ignore as was a known fault, but then I didn't know if there really was an issue.
Poor visibility
I found a lack of power, particularly going up hill or trying to overtake on the motorway.

Replaced it with a Seat Ateca a couple of years ago, which is so much better in every area.

QforCucumber · 13/10/2025 09:31

I have a 68 plate 1.5 diesel, had it for 5 years now and it's great (so far) its on about 58k miles, I only do around 6k miles a year in it. averaging 50mpg. only annoying thing is for the size of it it seems to struggle to get 3 suitcases in the boot for going on holiday!

Flakey99 · 13/10/2025 09:35

I always buy Japanese cars as they’re so reliable. I had a Honda CRV for over 12 years and now have another Japanese SUV.

Recently on holiday I hired a Toyota Corolla hybrid electric/petrol and was impressed with how fuel efficient it was.

When buying a new car, ideally visit several garages and have a few test drives to see how a car feels.

You might find that you prefer a different car to the one that initially ticked all the boxes on paper.
