To feel sorry for the Slytherins?

Saveusename · 12/10/2025 20:03

Just watching the end of Philospher’s Stone. The Slytherins are all celebrating then bang Dumbledore has thrown extra house points to Harry and mates and Slytherin is cruelly stripped of victory in front of the whole school.

AIBU to think this really isn’t helpful for inter school relations?

You're a Hufflepuff, aren't you?

AllJoyAndNoFun · 12/10/2025 20:04

I feel bad for the Hufflepuffs coz they are obviously the loser kids/ house.

UnhappyHobbit · 12/10/2025 20:05

I feel sorry for Ravenclaw. We don’t get to see how awesome they are 😍

Yes, but then we get Cedric as the Hogwarts champion and he’s Hufflepuff. Maybe there is something other houses just think they’re losers because they don’t value loyalty and fairness like they do intelligence and bravery.

Is bonkers the teacher favouritism. Team Slytherin all the way!

RedLeggedPartridge · 12/10/2025 20:50

Hufflepuffs are the kind ones. Best house. Slytherines actually enjoy being hard done by - they can justify their anger issues then.

Roselily123 · 12/10/2025 20:56

I agree … it did seem very unfair.

KeenGreen · 12/10/2025 20:57

There must be some kinder slytherins… so yeah it’s not fair 🤣

IsadoraQuagmire · 12/10/2025 20:58

I'm a Slytherin 🐍. I can't stand those goody goody Gryffyndors 😡

Househassles · 12/10/2025 21:04

I suspect it's supposed to work out roughly equally - for example, there are plenty of times the Slytherins get away with murder and kids from the other houses are excessively punished by Snape. But yeah, the house points and such are where you really see it because however the other teachers act, Dumbledore is the headmaster and has the most institutional power and he obviously favours Gryffyndor.

I think Tonks is supposed to be a Hufflepuff, too.

Toutafait · 12/10/2025 21:17

Before I knew how the series ended, I thought that after the defeat of Voldemort things would change at Hogwarts. I thought there'd be attempts to heal division. I thought that when Harry's children started at the school the House system would have been scrapped, so that all personalities of children would be living together. The outcome would be that the Slytherin types would end up being better integrated and nicer, rather than semi-segregated with other nasty children. I'm not sure how I feel about the actual ending, but it's probably a more likely ending than my idea. The traditions are a big part of Hogwarts.

Definitely. Slughorn was kind and stayed to fight, whilst the Gryffindor Peter Pettigrew went over to the dark side. Always annoys me when Hagrid says all dark wizards are from Slytherin when at the time they all thought Sirius had gone bad.

I think that the fact that teenagers give a single shot about an inter-house championship is more unrealistic than the magic tbh.

Agree. The sorting hat should’ve been destroyed during the final battle.

They won initially because Snape unfairly deducted hundreds of points from Gryffindor so no not sorry for them!

This also annoys me so much too regarding Sirius! Such a poor inconsistency 🤣

Dumbledore needs to have a word with Snape about his attitude, not disappoint all the kids mid celebration.

I always thought Hufflepuffs were hard done by. They were kind and loyal yet seen as a bit dim. I think from memory Professor Sprout was their Head of House also and I can't imagine she was of much use to anyone really.

latetothefisting · 12/10/2025 21:36

Worse than that is when there's a troll in the dungeons and Dumbledore sends all the kids back to their common rooms while the teachers try and find it, including the Slytherins...whose common room is in the dungeons!

It also doesn't make sense that the main qualifier for Slytherin is being pure blooded but there are multiple students in it who aren't.

On the Ravenclaw side it annoys me that even the official merch always has a literal raven on it rather than an eagle! And that they literally only have one quality, so Hufflepuffs are kind, fair, loyal, hardworking, etc Gryffindors brave, bold, chivalrous, and so on. Ravenclaws are only ever clever, and even then Hermione is apparently the 'smartest witch of her age' (I have my doubts about that) and isn't even in Ravenclaw, which makes them pretty irrelevant.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 12/10/2025 21:38

I don't know... it might be quite nice if all of the nasty 'Mean Girls'-type ones are kept in one House, and everyone else gets to keep far away from them 😁

Weren't the Hufflepuffs described as being a bunch of "duffers" at some point? I imagine that they were the relaxed, spaced-out, hippy-vibe ones, given that the nasty ones were in Slytherin, the academic ones were hot-housed in Ravenclaw, and Gryffindor was full of wannabe superheroes!

scalt · 12/10/2025 21:41

It's true that the ending of the first book was blatant Dumbledore favouritism. But I have some sympathy with the Slytherins for a different reason: all being lumped together as the house of the "ethically challenged". Although there was a hope spot at the end of the last book where nobody sits grouped by houses any more, in the epilogue, we see that the houses are once again of great importance, as is duelling.

And I don't like the way the kids have to do so many things in front of the entire school: sit under the Sorting Hat, eat together, receive their letters together, including Howlers.

It does consider putting Hermione in Ravenclaw. What are your doubts??

Agree Draco and snape are my two favourite characters

Ooogle · 12/10/2025 21:47

They do go back to their houses- cursed child shows that nothing seems to have changed house wise. Harry’s child is put in slytherin with Draco’s

i agree that it was very harsh to decorate the hall and celebrate the slytherins then take it all away and redecorate for griffindor- definitely terrible for inter house relations like you say. 😆
