To bloody love a bath

It's my favourite leisure activity atm, even more than sleeping (which is usually my favourite).

I can lay back, relax in the hot water, listen to music or browse the web on my phone, read a book, have a glass of wine, take care of myself in a calm way eg shave, exfoliate, wash my hair (not all at once obvs 😆)

Best thing is, ALONE TIME, my kids are now old enough not to want to join me in the bath every single time! 🍾🍾🛁🛁

I don’t have a bath in my current house & can honestly say in the 5 years I’ve lived here I haven’t missed it whatsoever

Thepeopleversuswork · 12/10/2025 19:45

There are two types of people in this world: bath people and shower people.

I like bathing more than almost any other activity: I find it incredibly restful and therapeutic and would do it for literally hours if I thought I could get away with it.

I like a bath above all for the relaxation and a shower just doesn't cut it for me because you're standing up, faffing about and you don't get the ability to kick back and chill. I'll only ever shower if I am very pushed for time or can't afford to get my hair wet.

yetanotherrandomname · 12/10/2025 19:48

I love baths. Used to read in them for ages. Not the same now I need reading glasses which steam up immediately.

familyissues12345 · 12/10/2025 19:49

I love a bath, but the bath in my en suite is short (and I’m not) so it’s not really one to wallow in. It’s nice though if I’m cold or feeling under the weather.

However, I do love a bath when DH and I go away to a nice hotel, those I do love!

BellyPork · 12/10/2025 20:03

I didn't really "get" baths before I lived in Japan...
Now I bathe every evening before bed: No soap, no bubbles, very hot water.
Bliss.

Readyforslippers · 12/10/2025 20:07

I love a bath, I come out feeling fully clean, much better than a shower. I like to run them extra hot, then I put on my audiobook and relax, lovely.

hby9628 · 12/10/2025 20:13

Yessss absolutely. One of my friend laughs at my bath obsession at this time of year. I bloody love it. What do you use in yours? My fave is Jo Malone bath oil. I don’t have any at
the moment actually but it lasts ages. I must put some on my Xmas list.

I love my bath , I spend far to long in there and often fall asleep .
I don't have a shower but if I did I'd probably only use it if I was in a real rush

I also fall asleep in the bath! I stopped telling people though because they always seem to fret about the possibility of my drowning. Sometimes I save valuable time by scheduling my nap time during my bath, if I'm tired 😁

I do have two showers in my house and I do use them, but they're strictly for utilitarian purposes- Getting Clean In A Hurry. And very good they are too, for that.

But a long (hour to an hour and a half) bath is bliss. I do roughly a third of the time reading, a third 'meditating' (sleeping) and the last third washing hair/the rest of me. And @yetanotherrandomname , if you have bog-standard reading glasses (as opposed to ones from the optician), if you drop the glasses in the hot water as it's filling, it equalises the temperature. When you get in the bath, dry them off with a towel and they won't get steamed up.

Showers and baths have different functions in my opinion. Showers are for getting clean. Baths are for relaxing.

Baths aren’t relaxing. Uncomfortable. Boring. But not relaxing.

As is the ‘baths are relaxing’ statement. An opinion.

Yes, which is exactly what I said in the post you originally quoted. I used the words ‘in my opinion’.

DarkRootsBlue · 12/10/2025 20:23

I love them, have one every day. I don’t read, or drink, or eat, I just lie there and think about stuff and relax.

I really don’t like showers, I only have one if I’m away from home. I don’t get the attraction - you’re standing up, and not even covered evenly with water there’s bits of you out in the cold.

Lonelycrab · 12/10/2025 20:25

Totally get you OP. Yanbu.

Showers are obviously quicker but the feeling from a long soak and the depth you can get your skin clean is imo more thorough than a quick in and out of the shower, which can bit a bit chilly and brrr unless you crank your heating too.

One thing about showers (in their favour) they are one of the only activities when you can really be left alone with your thoughts, and not be distracted by a phone.

One of the only times I can be alone with my own thoughts (as long as the fam leave me some ofc). I value this too!

Goodness, you "lay" in the bath, do you actually produce eggs?
Having had to have a bath as a child, since showers were not regular currency in the UK in those days, I was happy to get in and get out with a quick wash in between.
I haven't had a bath since November 2018, when I came back from a meal out and the temperature was around freezing, so I was cold. I ran a hot bath at my hotel and probably only stayed in for 5 minutes just to warm up.
I am really surprised at someone on Mumsnet advocating having a bath, as that would surely be up there with loo brushes on the height of unhygienicness?
Having said all that, my parents (married in the late 1950s) always used to bath together in the evenings to "talk". According to my mother, it was almost impossible to stay angry with someone, when in a bath together!
At the other end of the spectrum, my toyboy (together 19 years and now both over 60) gets really turned on having a shower together.
Horses for courses?

Funnywonder · 12/10/2025 20:35

YANBU to love a bath. But I HATE everything about them. Just lying there with my inner cacophony of dialogue. It’s really really boring. The water never stays hot enough. I don’t feel clean when I get out. I seem to suffer with some weird paralysis where I don’t want to move in case some body part or other gets cold, so the water ends up like ice. Also, I don’t think my skin is waterproof because it just refuses to dry after a bath🤣 I could stand in the shower all day long though.

SouthernNights59 · 12/10/2025 20:46

I hate baths and haven't had one for years. The water is never right, it cools down too quick, I don't find it relaxing at all. I lived with just a shower for years and when we bought a house with a bath I really looked forward to having one - no, the reality didn't match the dream. I can't even begin to imagine spending ages in one reading and drinking wine.

A quick in and out of the shower you say? No, I spend ages in there and love every minute - and it's far from chilly.

I used to hate having baths when I was younger, because the water got recycled between parents and children, and I never felt quite clean afterwards.

However... now that I'm a grown-up, I think that I'd hate to live in a house without a bath. I don't have them very often (I usually just shower after work, as I want to sit down and relax ASAP, having been on my feet all day), but after a long stretch in work, when my muscles are too tense, when I need to defrost in winter*, or I've had something awful like the flu, a warm bath is just what I need!

*I work outside, and snow days are not an option, sadly!

AhBiscuits · 12/10/2025 21:17

I couldn't tell you the last time I had a bath. I just prefer to do my relaxing on the sofa under a blanket, much less faff.

musicalfrog · 12/10/2025 21:20

Just a note on baths not staying hot for long enough. I think this is a modern bath problem. I have a 1970s ceramic covered bath which retains the heat amazingly! My previous (plastic) baths did no such thing.

TwistedWonder · 12/10/2025 21:22

Me too. I’m in process of viewing new flats and shocked how many don’t have a bath.

Its dealbreaker for me - I love a long hot soak on a cold evening

notanothernamechangemother · 12/10/2025 21:25

Timely thread for me as I am just debating whether to change our only bath into a shower. I'm not a bath lover, especially as our bathroom is cold and it's not the least bit relaxing to have my shoulders out when in the bath.

I think I will remove the bath and put in a power shower as I feel it will be get more use with 3 teen dc. I prefer the speed and efficiency of a shower. I prefer to relax on a heated blanket than bath that's semi cold after a few minutes.
