Just that really, are supermarkets now taking the absolute Micky?? I know I don’t have to buy it. I know no one is forcing me to. But seriously how can they actually think it’s ok to demand that price for a Beef wellington that serves 6. Granted it’s in the celebrity chef Christmas range and I’m well aware that we all have different budgets and I absolutely expect to pay for quality but come on, that’s a scandalous price. AIBU to think we have lost the plot with food pricing or would you pay it?

Why though?

Because you'd be paying a fortune to have Tom Kerridges name stuck on it.

But if people want to and can afford to, that's up to them.

Fortnum and Mason's BW serve 6-8 and "only" costs 120 pounds! I think the Marks one must be an inflated price, probably because of the celeb-chef branding.

The fortnum one is 33 percent smaller, and comes frozen , it also doesn’t have rhe truffles, red wine gravy or chicken.

A piece of fillet large enough to feed six and of excellent quality will cost £100ish. Bear in mind that all the work is done for you, and I don't think it's too bad. Beef Wellington in a decent restaurant for six is going to be about £55 to £60 per head.

And here, I give you an example of the “haves”…..😆

You could make your own for about a tenth of that price!!

No, you couldn't not if it included good quality ingredients including filler steak

beanbaggirs · 11/10/2025 17:57

Aldi always do a good one for four, at Christmas.

i've never been able to get this

You could make your own most things for significantly cheaper your paying for convenience

beanbaggirs · 11/10/2025 17:58

I order a few bits including Turkey from the M&S Christmas list & Sainsbury's too.

DreamyTealGuide · 11/10/2025 17:59

I really think we should start paying the price of what actual food cost.

Do you need to buy an expensive beef wellington? No
Should a cut of beef be priced realistically and fairly? Yes - meaning you won't be able to afford to eat it every day, so what.

Why do we insist we MUST eat "treat" food everyday, but then at bottom prices (translating in unhealthy and poor quality food)

APTPT · 11/10/2025 17:59

Such a wanker food.

A steak bake from Gregg's is not substantially different.

DontCallMeLenYouLittleBollix · 11/10/2025 17:55

It's not very likely to sell tens of thousands so it won't be 'mass produced' - they will likely sell very few, that need to be made locally by very trusted contractors and be very high quality given the demanding kind of customer that will buy them. These sorts of specialised event foods are made by independent butchers and caterers and usually in this price range. M&S is obviously looking to get a corner of that market.

Yes, and I suspect they're pitching for people who'll order other Christmas food from them and want everything from the same supplier for convenience. Someone who'd prefer to spend a bit more and only need one delivery rather than shopping around and ordering the meat dish from a local butcher, the starters from M and S etc.

I’m away for Xmas this year, but if I was home and serving six I’d consider it. I think for what it is, the ingredients, and its size, it’s a decent price.

and I’d not be thinking oh gosh those on a state pension can’t afford it. So I can’t treat us. I mean who actually thinks like that. Some people have no money so I should only buy what they can afford at all times. No one. That’s who.

FriedGreenCourgettes · 11/10/2025 18:00

Yesterday I saw two joints of beef (topside I believe, being veggie I don't know much about it) that were in some kind of a lattice cage that looked like chickenwire and were chained to the chiller compartment.with a tag that needed to be removed by staff. 😮

nothing to do with "haves"

A piece of fillet HAS a cost. You don't like it, don't buy it.
But the real price is a thing.

We voted for Brexit knowing full well this would happen (food price rises generally of which this is an obvious and extreme example).
This is the price of freedom I guess. We as a country need to own our choices.

Seems a poor kind of freedom for prices to have increased so dramatically.

We the individual have very little choice pre or post Brexit all we can say is that things have definitely not improved.

apart from the quality, the taste and the content. Pretty much the same really 😂

Lidl had a deluxe version for £9.99 - maybe for Valentine’s Day

Sigh, the op picked the most expensive one. They sell one for 60 quid as well.

You're a wanker if you think the difference is anything other than being enough of a knob to part with £200 for a steak pie.

It's what it fucking is.

CrystalShoe · 11/10/2025 18:02

PP are saying well, what about product x and y, they're luxury goods too. But they aren't food; the idea of food being SO expensive is what sticks in the craw. The idea that only the rich can afford this crazy dish, when all human beings need and benefit from good food. Yes, I know that no one needs to eat this BW in order to have great health, but there's just something really sickening about food costing this much.

And it's very hard to believe that this is a fair price for BW. As we can see with Fortnum's offering the exact same thing for 75 pounds less.

It's also a bit of a non-response to say, well don't buy it then. OP is aware that she doesn't have to buy it. The point is, we all know when something is a fair price and when companies are trying to rip us off. It's perfectly reasonable to express outrage at a company trying to pull a fast one. Like Marks charging 62.5% more than Fortnum's for the same thing.

I could afford the BW too, but I wouldn't buy it, because I think it's outrageous.

beanbaggirs · 11/10/2025 18:03

yeah, definitely the only difference 🤔

Yes, but that still doesn't make the price reasonable. A Birken bag is unreasonably priced, people still buy them.

crossstitchingnana · 11/10/2025 18:03

Is there a decimal point missing?

flowrrpoh · 11/10/2025 18:03

BlueSlate · 11/10/2025 17:51

I know.

I was just adding that you wouldn't even need to be wealthy just choosing to prioritise buying that.

Personally, I'll be buying a chicken because I don't like turkey but love a decent roast chicken.

Edited

Gotcha. 😊
I agree. I'm not wealthy and could afford it too.
I'm not buying it because I'm the fussiest eater ever and rarely eat meat but if I really wanted to I could! And I'm working class.
