£195 for a beef wellington!

Blueskybird · 11/10/2025 16:28

Just that really, are supermarkets now taking the absolute Micky?? I know I don’t have to buy it. I know no one is forcing me to. But seriously how can they actually think it’s ok to demand that price for a Beef wellington that serves 6. Granted it’s in the celebrity chef Christmas range and I’m well aware that we all have different budgets and I absolutely expect to pay for quality but come on, that’s a scandalous price. AIBU to think we have lost the plot with food pricing or would you pay it?

From the Booths Christmas Book (which came out last Thursday) £60 and serves four.

I mean, regardless of price, I would choose Booths over M&S any day.

Two years ago I wanted to do a Beef Wellington and asked my local butcher for meat. Hearing the price of loin I changed my mind, we did something else. It was very much more than other beef.

There will always be things in the shops/on-line that people can't afford.

I mean: We were never allowed Cornettoes when I was a child because they were 45p (you have to say that in the right tone of horror) which df thought was ridiculous. I mean ice cream's were only thre'pence when he were a lad.
Should Cornettoes have been banned?

And when you go on holiday, do you think that that holiday's abroad shouldn't be allowed because there's people who can't afford them?
Or what about expensive bottles of wine?
Or expensive cars
Or houses? Maybe people shouldn't be allowed to own a house over £300k because we couldn't afford that...

There seems to be an indignation when "I" can't afford something but no problem when it's something others can't afford.

And I wouldn't pay that amount for a meal, but Beef Wellington is a faff to make, and, if it's got good beef in, may well not be making a lot of profit for M&S, so it may be a fair price for it.

It’s not because I can’t afford it I’m not even a massive fan of BW and you can’t compare holidays etc it’s not comparable each to there own for holidays / possessions. But this is food! I’m simply asking if you think that price for that is a fair price that’s all

Which is almost half the size of the m&s one.

Yet another example of how you’re not allowed to critique the prices of anything on Mumsnet now (or any social media) or you’ll get the “Nobody’s forcing you to buy it” brigade 🙄 Yes I think OP is aware she isn’t being forced to buy it! You don’t need to be forced to buy something, in order to comment on the cost of it! Goodness me

Quite, I just don’t think people are understanding my point at all.

'Fair' is the price that the transaction is completed at. Willing buyers and sellers. No monopoly or cartel or restriction and plenty of alternatives.
But @Blueskybird I agree it seems steep, that took my breath away.
I think we might try game this year. But that will be on a different Thread.

So what it's food?

Do you think it magically comes from somewhere without people having to work to get it to you, and that it shouldn't be priced accordingly? Do you think you shouldn't pay its cost and the work of people involved?

Is an expensive price tag on a luxury, non-essential, top of the range, high end "collection" fair? well yes.. of course it's fair. It's likely cheaper as a supermarket product than as a deli delicacy made to order.

Why would it not be.

If they decide to sell eggs at a cost of £89 per egg, it would also be OK. I just wouldn't buy them 😂

It's actually just over half the size and is less than a third of the price.

Honestly I’ve done it a few times. You sear the beef and let it cool. Make thin pancakes and spread on supermarket pate. The mushroom duxelle is just chopped mushrooms fried in butter and seasoned with salt and pepper, cooled and spread on top the of the pate. Then you wrap up the cooled seared beef in the pancake, brush with egg and wrap closely in the puff pastry. A couple of criss cross slashes in the pastry and a brushing with egg, and bung in the oven for anyting up to an hour depending on the weight of the beef and how rare you like it does the trick.

Believe me that expensive M&S BW won't be made with either supermarket pate or pancakes.

According to Grocery Magazine, the pastry used takes 3 days of rolling and folding to develop over 2,000 layers. Then there's the chicken mousse that the duxelle mushrooms and black truffle are mixed into, and there might be an entire bottle of red wine used in making the gravy.

My mouth is now watering to taste it.😆

Now that really is unreasonable to mention that when we don’t all have access to Booths 😉

ErrolTheDragon · 12/10/2025 00:58

Beef Wellington? maybe Beef Chameau … as with footwear, you pays your money and you makes your choice.

TangerinePlate · 12/10/2025 01:10

Christmas is what you make it. Mine will be probably shin of beff slowly cooked with all the love that goes into prep.

In 5 years time my family won’t remember what we didn’t have. They will remember delicious food and lovely time we had together

SixSeven · 12/10/2025 01:13

The worst thing is it’s only 32% beef!

The M&S £60 version is 43% beef

The Booths £60 version is 56% beef.

Booths Christmas Catalogue!

BankfieldForever · 12/10/2025 01:47

I knew it would be the M&S Tom Kerridge range. I had the individual steak pie and oven chips from that range as a ‘treat’ and wouldn’t bother again -they were not very nice, both far too rich and greasy (I’m not used to that kind of food) and the calories were beyond astronomical.

Seaside3 · 12/10/2025 01:51

Now I need to go get my booths Christmas book.
That's sunday sorted.

flowrrpoh · 11/10/2025 22:59

Thank you

You're welcome. It's always interesting what people think they know when they haven't really checked.
Also interesting when people don't look at like for luke. So don't compare ingredients or weights etc. Tbh I never used to, but it's part of my job now, and it made me really check ingredients. It's shocking what some people will eat.

OhDear111 · 12/10/2025 02:52

You can always make your own! It’s not that hard. Beef is expensive though.

Well that has to be the most 'typical of Mumsnet' Whataboutery ever. Grin

It's not just high housing costs, school places and congestion that makes living in southern England so hard, but that you can't easily get to a Booths that tips you over the edge.

Whatever you do, don't look at this thread where we're all talking about getting our Christmas catalogues and other Mumsnetters are telling me which branch is best.

Bjorkdidit · 12/10/2025 05:50

I don't know about anyone else, but I really fancy trying beef wellington now, despite not really liking pastry, or steak.

But as I'd be worried that the beef wouldn't be cooked to my liking, as you can't see it until sliced up, I think I'm going to just get some fillet steaks and make a sauce that's similar to the mushroom filling, as it seems to be an easy alternative.

Worralorra · 12/10/2025 05:55

We made one last Christmas for 3. It cost £33.00 for the beef (local butcher, 0.6kg fillet steak) plus a further £5.00 for the mushrooms, pate and puff pastry (because life is too short!).

It’s expensive because of the fillet steak, but of course, it is the time saved that costs the money. The Waitrose version was £66.00 for 6 people, so not too far removed from what we spent…

I wouldn’t pay £195.00 though!

ChillWith · 12/10/2025 06:26

Tone deaf in a cost of living crisis, although their usual customers can most likely well afford them.
Otherwise, watch them get sold off for £1.95 on Christmas Eve when they are stuck with so much excess stock.

AhWeNoss · 12/10/2025 06:43

Blueskybird · 11/10/2025 23:45

Quite, I just don’t think people are understanding my point at all.

I think you lost credibility by going on about the cost of living crisis and state pensioners. Perhaps if you made your post without complaining about those who are not the target market being unable to afford it and claiming M&S is ruining Christmas, then this thread might have gone differently.

CeciliaMars · 12/10/2025 07:04

Also when it says feeds 6, it’s probably only big enough for 3-4 in our greedy family!
