Just that really, are supermarkets now taking the absolute Micky?? I know I don’t have to buy it. I know no one is forcing me to. But seriously how can they actually think it’s ok to demand that price for a Beef wellington that serves 6. Granted it’s in the celebrity chef Christmas range and I’m well aware that we all have different budgets and I absolutely expect to pay for quality but come on, that’s a scandalous price. AIBU to think we have lost the plot with food pricing or would you pay it?

Is Tom to M&S like Heston is to Waitrose.

Yes. Each has their celebrity rip-offs!

Of course you don't have to buy it, but I noticed over recent Christmases that many food retailers have taken note of the financial squeeze we are experiencing, and have moved away from pushing the more indulgent food items in their advertising. M and S were the outlier, still peddling all of the expensive items that it "wouldn't be Christmas" without. I think people like to show off their wealth by serving all of this unnecessary rubbish. I'm a bit old-fashioned, I suppose, but I think that Christmas is more about how you spend the time and who with. M and S are irresponsible for encouraging overspending. Their Christmas "food porn" adverts really get on my nerves.

Tempted to order myself one now and send you all a review after the event.

Haha do! I'm too much of a peasant for this, I actually prefer roast chicken anyway, but I kind of want to know what it's like now! Maybe I'll order one but only if they provide exact details of the supply chain.

So does anyone actually know how these BWs are going to be produced?

Nope. That information is not available. Which means they're factory-produced. Tom Kerridge is not whipping up each one in his AGA himself. A food manufacturer will be making it to his recipe. Which is why there's no info. about the fact that this terribly expensive BW is made on a soulless production line with ne'er an AGA or a bunny or a meadow in sight! 😂

Thank you I do know how expensive it is I do buy it

It’s all relative. I’ve just had a fillet steak for tea, it cost £8 for one. Some people would think that’s obscenely high, some not.

MrsWhites · 11/10/2025 19:36

Charlenedickens · 11/10/2025 19:23

No, you need to pre book it and say where you want it, ie book the location. So they will make to order then deliver to that location on the date you request.

Or they might mass produce them and keep them in an industrial fridge until your collection day!

DreamyTealGuide · 11/10/2025 19:36

femfemlicious · 11/10/2025 19:10

Ya but, why do you care, its not aimed at you, its aimed at rich people and that's ok.

The rich people you have in mind have private chef or buy food handmade for them - when they dont' cook - they hardly go to a supermarket to buy supermarket food.

Cakeandcardio · 11/10/2025 19:37

Beef wellington seems like such a crappy waste of good beef too

Exactly! Really stupid price.

RedRiverShore5 · 11/10/2025 19:39

I doubt they will be individually knocking up beef welly's because Mr Smith has ordered one at to collect at 12 pm on Wednesday.

You had a fillet steak sandwich? That's an odd choice for tea! It's usually tuna or ham and cheese etc in a sandwich.

@CrystalShoe food that is sold to the public does not habe to be made in a factory.
You can sell from your kitchen if you have registered with your local authority and have fiod hygiene practices in place.

To supply to larger businees like supermarkets, you generally have to be BRCGS registered. Or at the least SALSA registered.

Your friends jam could have been made at home. It may be that they found a factory to make it if they wanted to sell to a supermarket as registering and maintaining the above accreditations is time consuming and expensive.

I did wonder about that, but didn't say it as am not an experienced cook. Wrapped in pastry doesn't seem like the best use of such an expensive cut. Why not just make a steak pie if beef and pastry is what you want.

Thanks, Seaside. Maybe the rules changed since my friend made her jams. It was a few years ago.

I wonder if there will be reviews in magazines.

As long as it doesn't have mushrooms in it...

My Mil made it for us last Sunday. I did eye her suspiciously while asking where she got the mushrooms 😆

Seaside3 · 11/10/2025 19:50

@CrystalShoe they have been around for years i believe.
The business i work in started 20 years ago from my bosses kitchen, the rules were the same then. I know as I worked with her then. I work with her now. It's much bigger now, hence I know the rules around food manufacturers.

It’s madness.

Agree that no one has buy it but what a lovely way for a supermarket to underscore the ‘haves’ vs the ‘have-nots’. Lovely spirit of Christmas that.

Oh come on. "Have nots" as you put it aren't doing their food shop in M&S.

It serves six people. Six beef fillets would cost more than £100. This is a luxury, limited, pre-prepped dish. So not ridiculously priced either.

Is a car dealership that sells second hand Nissans not stock brand new Mercedes? Should Tesco not have a Value and Finest range? Should nothing expensive exists Incase it upsets people who can't afford it?

BunnyLake · 11/10/2025 20:04

Blueskybird · 11/10/2025 16:32

Yep M&S honestly in the middle of a cost of living crisis !

So lets take it further and ban designer clothes, high end jewellery, the sale of mansions and booking 5* hotels.

This M&S range is aimed at those who can afford it. My ex could easily afford to buy from it, I on the other hand will be doing my shopping at Lidl because I can’t afford it.

It’s just a pie really, or a very fancy sausage roll. 😁

I have in the past made a steak sandwich with fillet steak - a Gordon Ramsey recipe. One steak did about three sandwiches. It’s a really good recipe.
