£195 for a beef wellington!

Just that really, are supermarkets now taking the absolute Micky?? I know I don’t have to buy it. I know no one is forcing me to. But seriously how can they actually think it’s ok to demand that price for a Beef wellington that serves 6. Granted it’s in the celebrity chef Christmas range and I’m well aware that we all have different budgets and I absolutely expect to pay for quality but come on, that’s a scandalous price. AIBU to think we have lost the plot with food pricing or would you pay it?

That looks amazing! You are spot on saying relying on cash rich skill poor

They won't be making thousands of them.

They won't be on shelves taunting the pensioners.

They're not relying on anyone buying them.

It's just one item in one of their ranges which people are free to choose or ignore as they wish.

I’m not sure anyone would think it’s “excellent value” I am not sure when someone buys a luxury item they are looking for “excellent value” they are looking for other things, the quality, size, convenience etc.

No, excellent value doesn't mean budget-range. It means excellent value for what you are receiving, compared with other luxury goods of the same quality. You could have two designer handbags with the same amount of leather, handmade, great stitching etc. - basically pretty much equivalent in terms of quality and brand name - but one is 20k and one is 30k. And most handbags of that quality and name are 20k. Then maybe the 20k one is on sale for 17k. The 17k one would be excellent value for what it is, not excellent value out of all handbags you could possibly buy.

Brilliant! And I bet yours tastes better than the fancy-pants-yet-factory-produced Marks one!

Are you sure it's factory produced?

A fifty-pound turkey pie is not basic!

I think there are people who like to get value for money and there are those who don't care about that or pay no attention to it. And never the twain shall meet, as shown on this thread!

And the two attitudes often don't match up with how much money someone actually has.

If someone wants to buy an enamel dish/ Turkey pie/ stuffing/ pigs and blankets
for 6 people
for £50

I really don't see what's so outrageous.

I'd rather buy a Beef Wellington for £90 in Cook, and their pies are cheaper, but again, life is pretty miserable when the only thing you look at is the cost.

You might as well have Aldi's own brand beans on toast for Christmas, they must be cheap

The attraction to Fortnum and Masons frozen version as the appropriate standard is a bit bemusing. It's not like they've got the patent on beef wellington.

I’m not sure it’s a standard - it’s just something to measure the M&S one against. And, per kilo, there’s not a lot in it :)

Yes, it has to be, by law. Tom wotsit isn't whipping them up himself in his home kitchen.

No, but they're a byword for high-end quality.

maybe that many cash rich people have chosen to concentrate on earning money, not faffing with learning useless (to them) skills.

If DH didn't cook, I certainly would not put a foot in the kichen on Christmas day 😂

There've been multiple posts from people decrying this as overpriced because of something to do with Fortnum and Masons...

I don't know what the enamel dish and pigs in b have to do with it, but I know I could make an absolutely delicious turkey pie for much less than fifty pounds, turkey leftovers or no.

Well you've brought in the cost of living crisis and state pensions - both of which are irrelevant because the people it's aimed at won't be either struggling financially or relaint on the state pension.

If people want to pay for it, it's irrelevant.

If it were the only thing on the market or all Christmas food were suddenly this expensive, then you'd have a point.

If it were just your observation, why the emotive stuff about the cost of living and pensions?

Sorry it wasn’t meant to be that emotive just me thinking out loud really. You are are absolutely right the market it’s aimed for probably won’t bat an eyelid. But there has to be a point when we say enough! Surely? I’m just interested at what point people say enough!
maybe we have just had food too cheap for too long, or maybe it’s an age thing but I still think that is a huge mark up.

Yes, we know that people are free to choose or ignore as they wish, but it's normal to apply cognition to prices.

You have to be skill poor to buy prepared food? Gosh, someone may want to inform Michelin!

I'm not familiar with the law on pre-prepared supermarket stuff, but there are places that food gets produced other than factories and Tom Kerridge's kitchen. Are they not allowed to use 3rd party caterers who'd make things from scratch?

It IS a huge mark-up, OP.

Some people just aren't bothered about value for their money.

Cara707 · 11/10/2025 18:48

YANBU, I thought £80 was a lot last year- M&S really shouldn't charge so much.

Flowerlovinglady · 11/10/2025 18:49

£30 for two from Cook! so that's £90 for six. Vote with your feet and let M&S know your limits!

RoseDog · 11/10/2025 18:49

When you read the ingredients and do the maths, the beef is only about 700g of the 2.1kg, so you are paying for over a kilo of pastry and mushrooms!

Don’t rubbish a skill set that’s really not kind - you know the same skill set that’s making the ruddy Beef wellington in the first place that you think is reasonable!!!

Sorry, I meant food that's sold commercially has to be factory-produced. They can't guarantee food safety any other way.

The food that caterers use will also be factory produced. I mean, caterers probably aren't slaughtering their own pigs for their sausage rolls.

I have a friend who made amazing jam, and she ended up selling it in supermarkets. It had to be made in a factory for her to do that. The factory used her recipe.

Now that is poor, as there’s no way 700g of fillet (pre cooked weight) is a generous serving for 8 people! F&M all the way ;)

flowrrpoh · 11/10/2025 18:51

Tryingtokeepgoing · 11/10/2025 18:40

I’m often a just make it yourself person, and for a beef wellington it’s not that hard or that time consuming. But when we used to have it at Christmas I would always buy it, because I didn’t want to spend any more time than necessary in the kitchen while entertaining. Now one can make a beef wellington the day before and keep it in the fridge…but that takes more time as you have to make sure the fillet is completely cool after searing, and dry. Or eventually some blood will seep through and give you a soggy welly! Easier to rely on F&M or whoever, and accept you are paying £30 or so more than it might cost you to cook from scratch (possibly £50 for this M&S monster). In the cost of Christmas entertaining I think that’s a fair trade - but completely accept others have a different view. Though if £30 makes or breaks Christmas then I’m not sure beef wellington is good choice :)

Very true although accounting for weight there isn't much difference in price.
