To not go in this supermarket again after this?

I know it won’t be a loss to them..

I went to my local by myself Morrisons and picked up some bits for me and my little one. I didn’t get too much, just a basket full. There was only one check out open and it was quite busy so went for the self check out.

As soon as I got there, the shop assistant I felt was like hovering over me. Then the unexpected item thing went off. I know this occasionally happens for no reason, but he came over to help and then checking through my bag. It then went off again. I think possibly as I’d moved the bag slightly. He starts checking through my bag again. He pointed to some smoothies and asked ‘’have you scanned these?’’ When I clearly had as it said kids smoothies on my scanned list. I’d scanned everything.

I know some might think he was doing his job but he wasn’t hovering near anyone else. I’d done nothing to seem suspicious. Just made me feel like he thought I was a criminal

I’m astonished there was someone hovering at the self checkouts in Morrisons. I’ve given up on mine because on the rare occasions they have anything on the shelves to buy, there is only 1 person running all of the self checkouts and you wait ages for help.

MdNdD · 12/10/2025 20:57

In my experience, Morrison’s is the absolute worst. The scanners seem to be set at ‘everyone’s either incompetent or a thief, assume the worst and question everyone and every item…’
I never shop at Morrison’s for this exact reason.

I guarantee he will have forgotten about this within 30 seconds.

That's not the point or the question I'm afraid, it's about how the experience made her feel....

Outing a little but i work as a team leader in Morrisons and can say that at least 80% if not more of shoplifters are woman aged between 35-60. At least in the store I work in. So it may seem the security “only” target woman but that’s cause they are the most likely to shoplift(again at least in the store I’m in)

100% the same where I work.

PickAChew · 12/10/2025 21:14

I'm not convinced they even have any staff in our nearest morrisons.

Surely that's 80% of their customers!

I've only shopped in Morrison's a handful of times and the alert thing went off once or twice - the staff member told me it sometimes happens when you scan them add the item to your bag too swiftly - as though it hasn't had time to correctly register the 'weight of items scanned thus far' v's bagged items.
I mean, I am pretty quick at scanning but thought that was a bit of a stretch 😅

zazazaaar · 12/10/2025 21:17

HopingForTheBest25 · 12/10/2025 09:12

Don't do self scan OP - Morrisons aren't paying you to work there! You don't get a discount because you've done the work of a shop assistant - all that happens is that shops use us to fulfil their obligations and charge us for the privilege, while they cut shop workers' jobs!

I much much prefer self-scaning. I dont want to interact with more people than I have to. My day is very full of people and I want shopping to be just me and my headphones.

No not at all there will be people in there from a few hours old to well in to there 90s. Men, women, children. Why do you think only middle aged women go into shops

worcesterpear · 12/10/2025 21:33

Most people who are a few hours' old won't be paying for their shopping though will they? If the majority of shoplifters are women in this age range (31-60?) then why is so much emphasis being given to barriers to stop (mostly male) shoplifters from grab and runs involving expensive alcohol etc. Can you give a link to these statistics.

The barriers are mainly there because people tap their card and walk straight of assuming its gone through when it hasn't instead of waiting to check it actually has. Do you actually work in a supermarket or is your perception of what you think happens based on tiktok videos you've seen

worcesterpear · 12/10/2025 21:42

I don't work in a supermarket, or watch TikTok, it's based solely on what I have witnessed first hand. When I have asked staff about the barriers they say it's to stop shoplifters, which I assumed was the 'grab and run' types and not middle aged women sneaking a few items through without paying.

The majority of shoplifters are stopped well before it actually happens the oh i forgot about them bits hidden under my coat or oh i forgot i hadn't scanned the five bottles of wine. Oh my kid was scanning the shopping so didn't realise he hadn't scanned half if it with the handscanner. This is the sort of things women do every day that me and pp are talking about. Trolley pushes are a lot more rare. Putting things down there pants is definitely a man thing and yes they go back on the shelf 🤣🤣

Owly11 · 12/10/2025 22:01

You are over reacting. The buzzer went off and he came over to check. Nothing happened!

mondaytosunday · 12/10/2025 22:18

Wouldn’t bother me. I guess they occasionally focus on what customer or another. Those self scanners go wrong all the time - I always have problems with them! But I know I’ve scanned everything so I’m fine if they need to check.

As pp mentioned barriers are mainly there to stop the people who tap their card to pay and don’t wait to see if payment has actually been taken before walking away. Also trolley push outs and grab and runs aren’t actually that common. Most common shoplifters are people who come though self scan checkouts and don’t scan that bottle of wine or put their £20 steaks through as £1 bananas.

They will relay your picture to other supermarkets just to let them know, best to lie low for a few weeks?
