To not go in this supermarket again after this?

I know it won’t be a loss to them..

I went to my local by myself Morrisons and picked up some bits for me and my little one. I didn’t get too much, just a basket full. There was only one check out open and it was quite busy so went for the self check out.

As soon as I got there, the shop assistant I felt was like hovering over me. Then the unexpected item thing went off. I know this occasionally happens for no reason, but he came over to help and then checking through my bag. It then went off again. I think possibly as I’d moved the bag slightly. He starts checking through my bag again. He pointed to some smoothies and asked ‘’have you scanned these?’’ When I clearly had as it said kids smoothies on my scanned list. I’d scanned everything.

I know some might think he was doing his job but he wasn’t hovering near anyone else. I’d done nothing to seem suspicious. Just made me feel like he thought I was a criminal

I would love someone to ‘hover’ near me. Our Morrisons can get really busy and is understaffed, so you end up with one person having to manage all the self service tills and they are run off their feet. I would love not to have to wait for someone to come over.

You haven’t overreacted, it’s the way you were made to feel, I’m sorry.
You can go in there again, just try it out, see how you feel & maybe just go to the till queue.
It’s ok to have felt the way you did, especially as you had the responsibility of having your child with you. I hope you feel better soon, if it’s appropriate- gentle hug 🙂.

DiscoBob · 11/10/2025 11:19

If he was checking your shopping bag that you'd placed in the bagging area which was empty bar your shopping from there, then that's fair enough. It's not ok if he was checking another bag, like handbag or rucksack that wasn't being used in bagging area.

Tagyoureit · 11/10/2025 11:24

Flounce all you want, no one else is going to be particularly bothered by it.
Or maybe just move on in life, seems the easiest thing to do.

ThankGodItsAutumn · 11/10/2025 11:28

Knew this would be Morrisons before I opened the thread.

They are absolutely shit and I wouldn't touch their stores with a barge pole after too many examples of crap customer service, rudeness and sub standard products from my local one.

She wasn't "made to feel" anything. Her reactions are her responsibility.

However she can of course choose to shop where she likes.

My local Morrisons the security guard follows me around the entire shop like we're in a sitcom, I turn around and he pretends to be stacking the shelfs whilst wearing high vis.

He hovers by the checkouts even if I'm using a staffed one, he then follows me to the exit of the store and takes back up at his desk when I'm safely out the shop!

Every. Fucking. Time.

Family & friends have grown to think it's hilarious just how brazen it is, I find it really embarrassing so very rarely go there 😂

I must look like a criminal, or maybe someone else who frequents the store to steal, i dunno. I've never so much as not paid for a carrier bag. 😆

Very similar happens to my son (young adult) in our local Morrisons. I realise my son falls into the "high-risk for shoplifting" category but this guy sticks to us like GLUE. but has never followed me when I'm on my own.

My son and I joke that he should turn around and ask the guy if he wants his number 🤭 but never been brave enough to do it!

spoonbillstretford · 11/10/2025 11:30

I come in quite smartly dressed from work sometimes and feel like some assistants hover/are watching more than others. Shoplifters come in all shapes and sizes.

spoonbillstretford · 11/10/2025 11:32

Of course it could just be stereotyping. "50 year old woman, I'm going to have to approve a gin in a tin in a minute.'

Needmorelego · 11/10/2025 11:35

That sounds like a perfectly normal everyday supermarket experience that neither myself (customer) or a member of staff would even give a second thought too - other than "ffs these blasted machines".

megacat · 11/10/2025 11:40

There are some snarky comments on this thread, there is doing your job and also being a jobsworth arsehole which the assistant seemed to be.

Ive had this before in aldi, the assistant dealt with the unexpected item thing going off a couple of times for no apparent reason and clearly had me down as a blatant shoplifter as when I’d paid and was loading my things back into my trolley he was horrified when he saw the steak I’d bought and loudly exclaimed ‘have you paid for that?!’ Erm yeah look at my receipt.

Unless this has happened to you and the assistant made you feel like a shoplifter then you are in no place to accuse op of being dramatic.

Nothing whatsoever that was done by this guy sounds anything like ‘jobsworth arsehole’.

Overreaction. They do it to everyone. I always put my food directly onto the counter and pack once paid as packing in to bags sets the system off too much.

To be honest, they don’t do it to everyone, they seem to target teenagers and middle aged women. The threatening looking men that fill bags with alcohol bottles are left alone because they could punch the security guard.

This is what annoys me.

youalright · 11/10/2025 12:01

Nobody thinks your stealing smoothies. Its blatantly obvious when people are stealing or not your being oversensitive.

Just not true though is it if someone is aggressive they may be left but the cctv will be passed onto the police as if the person is being reasonable it can be dealt with at store level. Also teenagers its different a teenage under 16 can't be let go they have to be held until a parent or guardian comes to collect them or if not available the police

paradisecircus · 11/10/2025 12:07

I'd be annoyed but it doesn't sound serious enough to boycott the shop for, particularly if that's the most convenient one for you. I had something similar in Sainsburys where I thought I was being accused of stealing & got quite affronted. Still went back there.

saraclara · 11/10/2025 12:07

He was simply trying to find out what had set the warning off. There was absolutely nothing untoward in what he said.

Honestly, this happens to me very often, and that assistant will have to deal with the same alert a hundred times a day. It means nothing to him

I echo others in saying that this is a massive overreaction on your part, so please let it go. I'm guessing that you struggle with anxiety, but please be reassured that this is a nothing event. I'm amazed that it's never happened to you before.

saraclara · 11/10/2025 12:11

I actually walked out of Tesco with a trolley full of shopping that I didn't pay for. I'd reached my car when the security guy came to find me. I'd used my Tesco credit card for the first time, tapped it and left.
I didn't know that with that card, the first tap acts as a clubcard and adds your points. You have to tap it a second time to pay!
I was horrified, but I still go back to the same supermarket several times a week!

Vates · 11/10/2025 12:20

Don't take it personal and I certainly wouldn't stop going if that is the nearest shop. It has happened to me plenty of times and they are just doing their jobs. The staff get just as frustrated with the machines playing up as the customers.

I used to get followed by the security guard in my local Boots store, every flipping time, but still returned to shop again when I needed something. The latest security guard there doesn't follow me. It was annoying but did my best to ignore it.

jen337 · 11/10/2025 12:31

You needed help and he helped you. Go back, don’t go back who cares. You don’t need permission from mumsnet.

Shr3dding · 11/10/2025 12:32

If we all stopped going to a particular supermarket because of unexpected items checks we'd never go anywhere 😂

Do you suffer with anxiety?

Netcurtainnelly · 11/10/2025 13:32

SoScarletItWas · 11/10/2025 09:49

I guarantee he will have forgotten about this within 30 seconds.

Agree, move on, hes just doing his job.
Nobody knows whose stealing or not.

toomuchfaff · 11/10/2025 20:50

Theres a reason the check out was busy, because the self check out is always like this. Use the check out. Tells supermarkets to keep the check out vs add more self checkouts.

Theslummymummy · 11/10/2025 21:46

Slow news day?

LousyGolfer · 11/10/2025 21:53

You seem to have a massively inflated opinion of yourself. Why do you think you’re above a pretty standard check?
