Sexualised lyrics on mainstream radio

I am far from a prude, but I'm really shocked by some of the lyrics I've been hearing on mainstream radio 1 at school rush hour times this week.

From Sabrina Carpenter with "tears run down my thighs" (yes it bleeps out you get me wet) but still leaves the other part which is equally bad. The Billie Eilish / Charlie XCX - I love your black lacy panties, want to pull them to the side, lick it, kiss it, get up all on it, ride it... and then there's all the much publicised fuss about Taylor Swift's Wood.

I don't see an issue with these women writing these songs. They're grown adults. But surely the radio stations have a responsibility to either play more family friendly edits or not play at all during mainstream hours. What the heck happened to the concept of a watershed?

It just makes me a bit sad what we're doing to our kids if they're listening to this constantly, going round singing it.

Generally , most female pop stars nowadays are talentless bimbos who get their deals by performing in as few clothes as possible whilst singing about sex.
Yes, there are exceptions but it is so depressing to see the likes of Sabrina Carpenter, Dua Lipa etc etc playing the whore to stadia full of youngsters.
Taylor Swift is as bad. The female rappers are horrendous.
Female artists have taken hundreds of steps backwards.

I don't agree that they're talentless bimbos, well, I don't think SC is anyway. Which makes it such a shame that she resorts to these sleaze-filled, unintelligent lyrics that pre teen girls listen to

Which songs from pre 2000 can you show as an example that are as explicit as the ones quoted above

Salt-n-Peppa let’s talk about sex? I want your sex by George Michael? Do me, baby by Prince…. Are they ample examples?

Look up my neck my back.

This wasn't played loads on the radio though...

Oh it was 😈

Let's Talk About Sex does have a good message though. The lyrics aren't dirty. They're saying it's ok to talk about it

That’s fair, still would be cringey for an 8 year old to sing out loud though perhaps!

S & P's 'Push It' was definitely dirty, though.

FreyjaOfTheNorth · 11/10/2025 17:17

Change the radio station then.

Tealpins · 11/10/2025 17:18

OP, I couldn't agree more.

On Greg James' breakfast show, 'since I was a little girl, all I wanted was to be sexy' by CMAT. What the fuck is that?

Greg does a regular feature of shouting out to kids who hit double digits, ie 10 year old birthdays, and then plays Guess. There's no misunderstanding the very sexual lyrics and tone to that song. It's completely different to Pull Up to the Bumper.

Exposing kids to songs about sex is different to songs that are sexual - sexual songs feel inappropriate, super cringey and a bit borderline abusive. Let's not push kids' boundaries. And let's not do it at school run time on shows that clearly are addressing children as listeners. It's massively fucked up.

I saw the Purple Rain video on old TOTP last week and I blushed to the roots of my hair. It is actual soft porn. Was OK for TOTP it seems.

I would say that Radio One plays all the new stuff . If yiuvwant more 'family friendly' stuff, I'd seek a different station . Heart , perhaps...

How we scoffed at Mary Whitehouse. She wasn’t wrong though was she?

Maybe in your opinion...

PuppyMonkey · 11/10/2025 17:34

It always amazes me when I point out rude or indeed stupid lyrics (mostly Oasis songs) to people I know how many say “oh, I’ve never really listened to the lyrics”. So many people just don’t tune in to what’s being said, they just hear the beat and the tune and the general vibe. It’s really weird.

“Darling Nikki” from Purple Rain is immediately what I thought of when reading this thread. So explicit it led to the creation of the Parental Advisory sticker on records!

Piggywaspushed · 11/10/2025 17:35

Yes, I remember all the fuss about that one!

HeadsWinTailsLose · 11/10/2025 17:43

I remember when I watched Grease as an adult being quite shocked. As a 8 year old I didn’t give it a second thought.

ConnieHeart · 11/10/2025 16:13

I don't think those lyrics are too bad. Are you saying they're perfectly OK after the children are dropped off at school?

Well I disagree. Other people are talking about sexualised lyrics which would mostly go over young kids' heads but this is actual vengeance on a partner. My daughter was stalked by an ex partner so this is triggering for both of us. Yeah, teach young kids listening that if their partner upsets them, go get your revenge. I only mentioned the school run because that's when I heard it. Loads of songs don't get played any more because of their message - Delilah for one. Another revenge song.

TheWiseAmethyst · 11/10/2025 17:46

The Next Episode - Snoop Dogg & Dr Dre.
"Got my drink and my smoke and go home with something to poke on". Pair of charmers! The video is pretty explicit too. I have to admit I do love the music it's put to though.

Ginmonkeyagain · 11/10/2025 12:48

Ha ha bless your innocent cotton socks @Butteredtoast55 TBF the wikipedia entry says rather po-facedly that the lyrics are "not neccessarily a metaphor for anal sex"

😂I'm happy in my naive little world!

AngeloMysterioso · 11/10/2025 18:15

They literally played Sex On The Beach at my primary school disco when I was 11

BadWoIf · 11/10/2025 18:38

I agree with you, OP. I'm old enough to remember the BBC refusing to play Frankie Goes To Hollywood's Relax due to its implied sexual content, the precise nature of which went over my head for many years. That was actually quite subtle in comparison to the lyrics that are around now, and I agree that they should not be played at times when children are likely to be listening - and school run time is a prime example of this.

It's all very well saying turn the radio off/change stations, but that relies on the parent who is driving the car (and trying to concentrate on the traffic, cyclists, pedestrians etc) noticing the lyrics. It also draws the child's attention to the song, and they are likely to look more closely if they notice that Mum always turns the radio off when Sabrina Carpenter is playing.

No wonder young people feel they have to go along with rough sex and choking from the start (thank you Jack Harlow for Lovin On Me) and children's mental health is in freefall

Sometimes though the diction is really bad so it's hard to make out the lyrics

Just remembered another awful song: Shout Out To My Ex "I hope she's getting better sex, hope she ain't faking it like I did". Who's the fool here?

Plus some of Little Mix's videos made me want to hurl. Really objectifying women

user1476613140 · 11/10/2025 18:57

I totally agree. But then I wondered what she will write about when she hits menopause and dries up.

I stilll hate the song in the summertime by mungo jerry it makes me fume every time I hear it.
And I often wonder if don't stand so close to me should still be played.
When my grandson age 7 recently got into Eminem I turned on parental controls on Spotify and only one radio edit song became available!

No reason why Don't Stand So Close To Me shouldn't be played. Next people will be complaining about Every Breathe You Take
