Sexualised lyrics on mainstream radio

myotheraccountsa · 11/10/2025 09:10

I am far from a prude, but I'm really shocked by some of the lyrics I've been hearing on mainstream radio 1 at school rush hour times this week.

From Sabrina Carpenter with "tears run down my thighs" (yes it bleeps out you get me wet) but still leaves the other part which is equally bad. The Billie Eilish / Charlie XCX - I love your black lacy panties, want to pull them to the side, lick it, kiss it, get up all on it, ride it... and then there's all the much publicised fuss about Taylor Swift's Wood.

I don't see an issue with these women writing these songs. They're grown adults. But surely the radio stations have a responsibility to either play more family friendly edits or not play at all during mainstream hours. What the heck happened to the concept of a watershed?

It just makes me a bit sad what we're doing to our kids if they're listening to this constantly, going round singing it.

Remember Relax by FGTH? How bad was that? The media frenzy caused it to sell over half a million copies. I think this is why a lot of artists have followed suit. The kids love bad language or sexualised lyrics and the coffers come flying in as a result.

I didn't understand the lyrics to Relax, I was only 14 in 1984 and in those days we were very naive and we didn't really have sexualused songs or if we did they flew right over my head 😂

I loved that era. Dolls in pushchairs, robotic dogs on leads, space hoppers, Girls World. I'd hate to be growing up in this world now. Its evil.

Edited

I think that's rose coloured glasses. Don't forget the 80s was also the time of the IRA (school evacuations for bomb threats were common) and then in the evening we used to cosy to watch Jim fixing for kids. There was plenty of evil around then.

tulippa · 11/10/2025 09:50

It's always been like this. I remember I Wanna Sex You Up by Colour Me Bad blasting out over the radio on the bus to school in the 90s. The lyrics mentioned above will likely go over the heads of most younger children.

HobnobsChoice · 11/10/2025 09:50

Chain Reaction by Diana Ross is pretty explicit

"You make me tremble when your hand moves lower
You taste a little then you swallow slower
Nature has a way of yielding treasure
Pleasure made for you, oh"

That was 1985 and pretty sure that unlike Relax it wasn't edited or banned from radio playlists.

I think there's more music now that's quite erm.... descriptive of bodies during sex and especially women's bodies usually sung by women. I very rarely have music radio on so I only tend to hear about it via threads like this. WAP did shock me!

Ginmonkeyagain · 11/10/2025 09:51

Also for goodness sake don't listen too closely to the orginal version of Tutti Frutti by Little Richard!

Devilsmommy · 11/10/2025 09:52

Personperson · 11/10/2025 09:45

LMAO that's tame compared to the song in my teens.

Look up my neck my back.

We thought we were the shit listening to that. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🙃🙃🙃

This was the song I was thinking of when I read the thread title 🤣 we must be similar ages. That was about as in your face as you can get 😅

Seagullsandsausagerolls · 11/10/2025 09:54

Laid, Ebenezer Goode, Face Down Ass up, Let's Get it started and that's only a few off top off my head.

My DH thinks it's hilarious that I only worked out in my forties All I Want to Do is Make Love to You and it's meaning (and Ebenezer Good embarrassed 😳).

Cardi B WAP. Ds was convinced the poor pussy needed a MAP as he was lost 😂

Ginmonkeyagain · 11/10/2025 09:54

Tutti Frutti - not about ice cream - "Tutti Frutti, good booty, if it don't fit don't force it. You can grease it, make it easy"

Tutorpuzzle · 11/10/2025 09:54

Pop songs have always been filthy (‘Come on Eileen’, ‘Ah, Push It,’ etc, etc), but that Sabrina Carpenter one, with her blow-up doll aesthetic, is just a bit too biological. Catchy tune though.

beaniebabby · 11/10/2025 09:55

What makes me laugh is they bleep out some parts but not others, what is the point

beaniebabby · 11/10/2025 09:56

I was a teen in the 00s as well and listened to all of them but I don’t remember it being so blatantly obvious what they were singing about, yes innuendo etc but Sabrina is very very obvious what she’s on about I just don’t like her and other artists (if you can call them that really) are doing the same

Agree, most videos these days are soft porn. Britney in her school uniform looks completely innocent!

I forgot this one! Filth!! 🤣 Satisfaction too.

beaniebabby · 11/10/2025 09:59

This wasn't played loads on the radio though...

gannett · 11/10/2025 09:59

The first Madonna song I heard was "Erotica" - "erotic, erotic, put your hands all over my body" and more - it was 1992 and I was 8. Loved it then (without quite understanding it), loved her ever since.

I find it more shocking that some adults apparently can't remember the music they grew up to because sexual lyrics in pop are nothing new.

More interesting to ask if the artist in question does it well. Sabrina Carpenter's lyrics are very very funny, she mostly writes about sex and relationships as a source of humour and it's all very knowingly bawdy. The Taylor Swift song on the other hand is pure cringe (mostly because she seems to be aping Sabrina and can't do it). Charli XCX and Cardi B are working in genres (club music and rap) where getting down and dirty to sexual lyrics has been the point for decades.

I have fond memories of my class being lined up for our end-of-year school photo and yelling the lyrics to this because we were bored. Our poor teachers.

I might play it at my wedding.

Sus808 · 11/10/2025 10:04

I get that a lot of it goes over the kids heads, but that they’re listening to these lyrics and repeating them while singing along is gross.

Dontcallmescarface · 11/10/2025 10:08

"This bed is on fire with passionate love, the neighbours complain about the noises above, but she only comes when she's on top" - Laid -James. One of the best songs of the '90's IMVHO.

What about Christina and Dirty?

What about when Sir Mix-A-Lot declared his love for Big Butts?

And then Rachel from friends sung it to her baby to make her laugh. 😆

geekone · 11/10/2025 10:25

“I don’t want anybody else,
when I think about you I touch myself”

The Divinyls 1990 not banned from the radio and I remember knowing EXACTLY what it was about as a teenager.

the problem we have in this country is that sex is taboo, when it’s pretty much the most important thing we have to do as a species.
Maybe if we were less pearl clutchy about it all we would be able to talk about it better. We would be able to say no much easier we would be able to explain that as we age the need disappeared that sometimes we need it as much as we want it. Maybe if we talk about it more at a younger age it will be something women do and not something that’s done to them.

yea I know plenty women do I do maybe less now I am older but I tried to own it. But I remember how I felt pressured how I felt out of my depth because it wasn’t normal for girls to discuss it with women who had done it before. I never had a conversation with my mum about sex ever that was something she just did because she was married as far as I was aware. She would have been mortified to say anything other than don’t have sex until your wedding night you don’t want a baby and no husband.

GooseOnMyGrave · 11/10/2025 10:27

Erm Like A Virgin???
I can list endless songs from the 80s and 90s with overtly sexual lyrics.

And middle-aged blokes getting it on with 13 year-olds was a bit of a 'laugh'. According to the press at the time. The 80s were NOT a utopia.
