Sexualised lyrics on mainstream radio

I am far from a prude, but I'm really shocked by some of the lyrics I've been hearing on mainstream radio 1 at school rush hour times this week.

From Sabrina Carpenter with "tears run down my thighs" (yes it bleeps out you get me wet) but still leaves the other part which is equally bad. The Billie Eilish / Charlie XCX - I love your black lacy panties, want to pull them to the side, lick it, kiss it, get up all on it, ride it... and then there's all the much publicised fuss about Taylor Swift's Wood.

I don't see an issue with these women writing these songs. They're grown adults. But surely the radio stations have a responsibility to either play more family friendly edits or not play at all during mainstream hours. What the heck happened to the concept of a watershed?

It just makes me a bit sad what we're doing to our kids if they're listening to this constantly, going round singing it.

Ebenezer good?.I thought that was about drugs

It is. I was talking about explicit songs in general.

"This bed is on fire with passionate love, the neighbours complain about the noises above, but she only comes when she's on top" - Laid -James. One of the best songs of the '90's IMVHO.

This song still gives me goosebumps

cornbunting · 11/10/2025 10:44

If you've never listened to Oh Jean by The Proclaimers, you should. It's the closing song of their superb album Sunshine on Leith, and although the lyrics are sexual they're not particularly explicit. The song itself, however... Basically sex/orgasm noises to music.

Sexual references in music is nothing new. Mozart was at it in the 1700s... And that wasn't just a one off, there was more where that came from.

LOVE this song 😍

Pop song is about sex shocker!

There have been explicit lyrics for decades but I think it was mainly from men in the past, and there’s been a shift currently with more women singing filthy lyrics.

Some people may think ‘good for them’ but I personally think that, as we’re living in a society where sexual abuse of women is rife, it’s sending a message to men that many women are ‘up for it’! I really don’t like it and when any man tells me he likes Wet Leg I just cringe.

Nah, plenty of female artists were singing filthy lyrics in the past - Britney, Maddona, Rihanna, Lady GaGa, Christina Aguilera, Lil Kim, Nicki Minaj, etc.

"Cause I may be bad/But I'm perfectly good at it/Sex in the air/I don't care/I love the smell of it/Sticks and stones may break my bones/But chains and whips excite me.”

As “up for it” sounding as you can get. All over the radio in 2010. Not even censored!

Tutorpuzzle · 11/10/2025 09:54

Pop songs have always been filthy (‘Come on Eileen’, ‘Ah, Push It,’ etc, etc), but that Sabrina Carpenter one, with her blow-up doll aesthetic, is just a bit too biological. Catchy tune though.

I’m not sure Come on Eileen is ‘filthy’. But to be fair I didn’t even realise it was about sex and it’s a song from my childhood/teenage years 😂

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 11/10/2025 11:33

I think the music in our childhood was just as bad - spice girls two become one, another level freaky, tweet oops there goes my, I wanna have sex on the beach vengaboys etc etc

spoonbillstretford · 11/10/2025 11:38

Have you been on the moon in the last 50 years?

It is very moderate compared to the innuendo in mainstream music in the 1970s to 1990s.

FiloPasty · 11/10/2025 10:36

This has cracked me right up

I was laughing about this with DD (16) the other day. She said what a good tune it is but OMG the lyrics, mum 🙉😅

East 17 Deep was quite raunchy if I remember

Me only realising right now at 40 what these songs were all about. 😂🙈

They are not singing about it in the same way as men though, and absolutely none of it is about sexualising men and boys half their age or calling them sluts which was normal in mainstream music for years.

Deeprug · 11/10/2025 11:54

I was getting ready for work when this came on radio one! It was too much!!! I guess, at least have a bit of class!

KimberleyClark · 11/10/2025 11:54

TheaBrandt1 · 11/10/2025 09:26

How we scoffed at Mary Whitehouse. She wasn’t wrong though was she?

No I don’t think she was. I grew up in the 60s/70s when most song lyrics were either innocuous or nonsensical, there were those that weren’t so innocent as they sounded but they were nothing like as blatantly sexual today and they were much more romantic.

maddening · 11/10/2025 11:58

welshcakesandtea · 11/10/2025 09:33

Maybe it wasn’t as blatant to us because we had inexperienced brains, I’m sure our parents would have disagreed though and knew exactly what they were singing about! 🥲

Which songs from pre 2000 can you show as an example that are as explicit as the ones quoted above

Hurryupwearedreaming · 11/10/2025 12:00

And yet the other day, Bowie’s Five Years had the word queer faded out/censored on the radio.

I also love this song - and it is in no way as sexually explicit as the songs quoted

TheFoodLife · 11/10/2025 12:04

It’s disappointing, yes. I prefer to listen to older songs, there’s more vocal range and better lyrics. I love Carole King and James Taylor, Nick Drake, everything but the girl, I absolutely love early Brian eno’s early albums too, where he sings.Damien Rice, Joan Armstrading.

none of this helps with radio though! I avoid the radio!

NerrSnerr · 11/10/2025 12:05

Macherie53 · 11/10/2025 10:33

Do people even still listen to the radio?!?

No. Nobody listens to the radio. The BBC Radio stations and commercial ones like Virgin, Radio X etc just broadcast for fun and pay their DJs £££ for lols. What do you think?

Luddite26 · 11/10/2025 12:12

I totally agree. But then I wondered what she will write about when she hits menopause and dries up.

I stilll hate the song in the summertime by mungo jerry it makes me fume every time I hear it.
And I often wonder if don't stand so close to me should still be played.
When my grandson age 7 recently got into Eminem I turned on parental controls on Spotify and only one radio edit song became available!

That’s not the message I’ve got from Wet Leg tbh

Butteredtoast55 · 11/10/2025 12:15

I think the lyrics have become cruder and the meaning more explicit. Then there's the in-your-face videos that have all the subtlety of a Carry On film. I know I'm old fashioned, as evidenced by this thread educating me that Pull Up To The Bumper' isn't about flirting whilst in a tiresome traffic jam 😁
I get that there's an equality to women being overtly sexual in their lyrics, but I think some female artists are deluded if they don't realise they're creating porn by any other measure. I think Sabrina C is very talented but the overt sexualisation, done with the full knowledge that most of her fans are children and young women, helps no-one but her and her bank balance.
The 'tears run down my thighs' lyric is just disgusting and, frankly, idiotic.

Interesting given how that word is generally used today!

TooBigForMyBoots · 11/10/2025 12:32

Madonna and Prince were all over sex back in the day.
Salt N Pepa were talking about it.
My Ding A Ling by Chuck Berry is pure filth.😱

Hankunamatata · 11/10/2025 12:36

The song 'im horny' 1998.
Even worse when have wee kids singing it
