Why the F should I tell BBC every year that I don’t watch TV ?

Why can’t they upgrade their subscriptions/licencing model like Netflix etc ?

If you look at BBC corporation’s ownership, majority stakeholders are private Ltd companies and individuals. Why the f are they entitled to demand subscription fees from me for services I don’t use!

The language in the emails is quite strong, I’m sure a lot of senior citizens just pay to not get into trouble. That’s extortion!

We cancelled our licence two years ago, I rang them up explained we don't watch BBC as most of their programmes are dire and we don't agree with their policies.
The young man explained it wasn't only the tv, I said I understood that but I still wanted to cancel as we have Prime, Netflix and Disney plus a busy social life and didn't need the BBC.
We received a refund, and have never had any letters, and we do not miss the BBC or live tv at all, especially the news!

Check out ChilliJonCarne on YT, he's great for advice on cancelling the licence.

When they called at my door they says half of prime now requires a tv licence. Never asked why as I don’t really care. I’ll need to check out CJC as I felt very intimidated by their officer

You’d only need it if you watch live tv via prime (like when they have the live sports stuff etc or the live channels) if you’re just watching on demand stuff you don’t need it.

I knew that but he was pushing that so much was live I wouldn’t be able to prove what I watched so just get a licence. Typical bully.

Since the BBC scandals eg Jimmy Saville & votes for animal names that were selected incorrectly and other issues that occurred. Many people have stopped paying their TV licence in protest against the BBC.
The BBC had a news story stating how many more people had stopped paying their licence & they quoted some figures.

In the past I declared via the form that I did not watch TV (10+ years)
At the time, I did not own a TV & worked very long hours & had hobbies.
Nobody visited my property to dispute this fact.
There is more to life than watching the TV !

I believe it is still possible to buy a black & white TV license which is cheaper.

The BBC still does public broadcasting

BBC Sport
BBC interactive (text)
BBC services with subtitles
BBC Big events coverage such as Royal Wedding, olympics,

BBC radio channels (which do not require a license to listen to)
Shipping weather forecast
News
Sport

never had a tv licence in my life and don't intend to start neither do I fill in the no licence needed they came to my door in 2002 and not come near me since and I do watch BBC it still works without the licence so in my book it not needed if BBC don't care why should I

AeriatedAnna · 13/10/2025 15:14

We’ve not had a licence for about 6 years now, they did actually call once but we were out. We’ve had many threats, but nothing’s happened so far. There’s no point filling in the online form if they’re still going to keep bothering you. So I’m going to start returning the monthly letter to them like Tryingtokeepgoing does. Watch the YouTube videos of them going round to people’s homes, they’re hilarious.

CalzoneOnLegs · 13/10/2025 15:46

@LittleCarrot12 they maybe meant the live broadcast on Amazon (if such a thing exists? ) otherwise that’s just lies

ETA your main mistake was just not shutting the door on him though

CalzoneOnLegs · 13/10/2025 15:49

@Coffeetime25 sorry but if you are using their services you should pay, IMO

ETA however. If they leave themselves wide open to abuse it is on them , they need to step up, But I don’t think they are suffering too much with 6 billion a year income

CalzoneOnLegs · 13/10/2025 16:18

@TheSpiceoflife2day they do sound scintillating, especially parliament

I agree. The kids opened the door and I was quite shocked tbh. Will be more alert next time.

Not true - and an ageist assumption. I got rid of my t v over a decade ago, best thing i ever did. I can watch dvds, read books, listen to books for free courtesy of Libby library app, all cheaper than paying the licence fee. I still occasionally listen to Radio 4 extra, all repeats - Beeb isn't really up to making any good new programmes, just same old cr*p, Archers, Desert island bloody discs, endless repeats of the appalling Goons show and similar outdated nonsense. They obviously spent all your license fees on talentless old has been footballers and other dodgy old blokes.
