Men violently preventing women from congregating, communicating and networking, is what the Taliban do. Why is it happening in the UK?

The FiLiA Women's Liberation Conference was targeted overnight, the attackers even live tweeted the violence.

Local politicians are so far silent.

This is literally terrorism, using fear and violence to shut down legitimate peaceful discussions.

Live: Venue vandalised and protesters demonstrate at feminist conference

The Brighton Centre has been vandalised as a feminist conference begins there today.

Who are you (or any of us) to decide what people should or shouldn't get angry about? They quite obviously do have their reasons, you just don't agree with them.

Not all reasons are valid or justifiable.

Who is saying it should be shrugged off?

Some people in this thread!!

If they wanted to scare them or stop them from speaking, they'd have done something during the day, during the conference, when they were actually there.

Ridiculous comment. But they were also there during the day, with their megaphones and signs.

Nobody was hurt, nothing has been disrupted. I'd say it's a good thing that the media haven't given it the time of day.

It has been in major newspapers. The BBC has reported on it.

In the past, TRAs have disrupted and hurt people. It's actually a bloody miracle it didn't escalate this time, but maybe the vandalism (which is no big deal to you) had the police on their toes for once.

Yeah I saw it just below the story of the dog that got stuck in a fence, and Celebrity Traitors 😅

It’s such a double standard. When the supreme court judgement came out I read many accounts of trans people who were apparently terrified / too afraid to leave the house over a clarification of rights.

Whereas violent, destructive behaviour designed to intimidate women attending the conference should just be shrugged off.

Exactly this.

FirstCuppa · 10/10/2025 21:00

That's been the biggest change among my friends, the gay and lesbian support for them has almost completely dried up. Straight guys don't really care, some straight women don't care but their "allies" in my friend group now roll their eyes if trans "ishoos" are bought up. That was very different in 2022. They've lost all the good will.

I think most people are definitely over it.

TheProfoundlyPeculiarPointOfPete · 10/10/2025 22:34

But you know full well it's not those specific people/issues they're mad about.

Oh, were the windows some sort of code? Break windows and use spraypaint of pantone 14-1911 TCX to express acceptance of research into the immigrant experience, discussion of non-state torture but reject the notion that sex exists.

Should you also wish to communicate your hatred of travellers and support of people who don't indicate at roundabouts, that's 3 windows, hack a water main, and the spraypaint must be chartreuse.

Bit of a laborious system to communicate what you're mad about, but until anyone can think of a more efficient way I guess we're stuck with it.

JaquelineHide · 10/10/2025 22:34

Megaphones and signs?? Oh no! What are they going to do, shout slogans that are so crackley we can't understand them?

The fact of the matter is, no matter how vehemently you disagree with them, no matter how little you think of them, they have every right to be there with their megaphones and signs, as long as their actions remain within the law. Just like you have every right to get a megaphone and sign of your own, and stand on the other side of the street to counter-protest.

I never said otherwise. That was merely a response to your claim that they only appeared at night.

TRAs are TRAs. Some of us have had plenty of experience of them. We know how they can escalate. This group has already said they will. People downplaying their behaviour will embolden them.

See my follow-up posts above.

Violence and vandalism are unacceptable and of course illegal but describing this as terrorism is a stretch. And this is nothing like life under the Taliban, where rape and violence against women in their own homes is considered perfectly acceptable. Let's keep things in perspective.

you are a man, right ?
according to you robbing women of their voices and right of speech and discussion is just a minor thing...

littlbrowndog · 10/10/2025 22:37

But what are these men protesting about. ?

women having a conference ?

are there cities in the uk that women are not allowed to hold a conference ?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 10/10/2025 22:37

94% of people in the poll don’t appear to agree with poor old Kimura for instance, and their “I’m not bothered” need to downplay the bullying of feminist women by misogynistic men and ridiculous posho children who’ve never been told no.

MPs have tweeted about it too.

I'm glad for you that you find aggressive men so funny and inconsequential, though. Must be nice to be in that position.

A feminist conference is not trans women’s backyard.

Brighton, basically the UK's capital of inclusivity, is their 'backyard'. It's the equivalent of holding a Ranger's fan club meeting in the carpark of Celtic's ground.

It is about women and for women. Nothing to do with men identifying as women. If they want to be represented and to be heard, they have to organise their own conference.

I agree. But the way protesting works is that those who don't agree try to disrupt the thing they don't agree with.

So no, they have no reason to be angry.

Who are you (or any of us) to decide what people should or shouldn't get angry about? They quite obviously do have their reasons, you just don't agree with them.

@Kimura No, Brighton is not their backyard. Trans people are a small percentage of the population so majority of people in Brighton are not trans. If Brighton is the capital of inclusivity it should not be made a hostile place for a feminist conference. Unless inclusivity means excluding feminists.

No, they don’t have a reason to be angry.
If a violent male gets angry and beats up his wife, does it mean he has a reason and we just don’t agree with him???
Just because those people were violent and vandalised public property, does not mean they have a reason. Their behaviour was unreasonable.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 10/10/2025 22:48

Hahaha it’s so fucking funny when men who are angry for totally reasonable reasons, because women told them no, bully, threaten and intimidate women, not that I’m justifying it or anything, perish the thought!

Apparently so. And yes it was predictable. That doesn’t mean women should therefore change their behaviour, because men can’t behave themselves.

Well, it's great that you think that, but you know full well what Brighton's reputation is when it comes to LBGTQ ete etc. It has the largest non-straight population in the UK. If it's not their backyard, then they don't have one 🤷🏻‍♂️

No, they don’t have a reason to be angry.

Unfortunately you don't get to tell people what they can or can't get angry about.

If a violent male gets angry and beats up his wife, does it mean he has a reason and we just don’t agree with him???

Yes? An awful and unjustifiable reason. Almost everything we do happens for a reason, or we wouldn't do it.

Just because those people were violent and vandalised public property, does not mean they have a reason.

Reasons aren't just things you think are morally correct.

I don't find it funny. I'm just not scared of people with signs exercising their right to express their views. And if I believe in something, or disagree with something strongly enough, I will - and have, many times - get out into the thick of it and made my voice heard.

Are you going to Brighton tomorrow to stand up to these bullies and show them that their tactics aren't working?

Women are attending a conference. In Brighton. Right now. Have you been on the wine? 😅
