To think it's ok for DS to use a jug to rinse his hair in the bath?

DS is 11 and takes baths and uses a jug to rinse his hair. It's still the same jug from when he was a baby. It lasted well, but it's finally starting to fall apart.

I told DH I was going to buy a new jug, but he insists that jugs are only for babies and DS should now do without. DS disagrees strongly.

As far as I can find, even for adults, rinsing hair with a cup or jug is a reasonably normal thing to do. On the other hand, the only shampoo-rinsing jugs I can find in shops are in the section for baby stuff.

YABU = Jugs/cups are for babies. DS needs to rinse his hair another way.
YANBU = Rinsing hair with a cup/jug is fine.

YANBU. Of course it’s okay to use a jug. There’s 2 in my bathroom and we have showers. We had a jug in there before we had our child. Teen DD uses a jug during her shower to help rinse her hair. I use a jug to rinse down the tiles and shower screen.

My grandparents always had a jug for the bathtub and I used it when I stayed overnight. It was baths only. I don’t think they had a shower fitted until they were about 70yo.

@ILoveMyGonk Give your DS a jug. He’s getting himself clean. That’s what’s important. Tell your DH he can get himself clean however he chooses and to leave DS alone. Only for babies is rubbish.

Personally I have never used a jug as we don't have a bath and got our kids used to showering from day 1 (we had a small seat to put them in as babies but they were used to the sensation of the shower from when they were tiny). But I see no problem if your DS prefers to do it this way, and he is getting the job done properly. Cleanliness is the most important!

I use a jug all the time! Wasn’t aware this made me a baby 😂
Sometimes it’s just nice staying in the warm bath water and not having to stand up to shower!

zingally · 08/10/2025 09:23

You don't need a specific hair-rinsing jug for an 11yo - your DH is right on that. A plastic £1 jug from Poundland/IKEA would do the job just as well.

My mum washes her hair in the kitchen sink (I've no idea why, each to their own), and uses a washed-out yoghurt pot to rinse hers!

"Swooshing" hair in the dirty bath water is far more babyish (not that it matters) than using a jug to rinse with clean water -your DH is being really weird about this. Such a bizarre thing to get worked up over. It's actually none of his business.

I dont think OP has said that she needs a specific hair rinsing jug, just that the previous one was from when he was a baby

Babykidneys · 08/10/2025 10:22

Ridiculous. I am mid 30s and only got a jug for the children. But it’s a revelation. Finally makes baths doable. I will keep my jug forever now 😂

Stompythedinosaur · 08/10/2025 12:05

It isn't hurting anyone, he should be able to wash his hair like he likes!

Thelnebriati · 08/10/2025 12:10

Why does your DH think jugs are for babies, does he feel ashamed at the thought of his DS being babyish (even in the privacy of his own bathroom), and is he going to try to toughen him up as he gets older?

Hankunamatata · 08/10/2025 12:28

Never used a jug. Can't remember what did when dc were small. Prob just tupple wear tub

What on earth is wrong with your DH?

Or the op to post such an utterly dead boring non event.

Exactly. It just made me realise I have no idea what "normal" people do. Bathtime shampoo rinsing isn't one of my general conversation topics with most people Smile

Yet you still felt the need to comment

Choice4567 · 08/10/2025 13:39

But surely laying down and slooshing means your washing your hair in dirty water?! I actively don’t let my kids do that! Jug or shower head rinse, otherwise your hair isn’t clean!

ShodAndShadySenators · 08/10/2025 13:50

You've just reminded me of the light blueish greenish plastic tub we had for this when we were growing up and that I haven't thought of for over forty years

Your son's method is fine, a cheap plastic jug will do the job just dandy, your DH is being odd about it and there is always the shower backup in case of unexpected jug failure anyway

soupyspoon · 08/10/2025 21:11

A side issue but peoples bath water really isnt 'dirty'

People dont get dirty these days, we're not working down the mines

A few professionals will result in dirty bath water Im sure, like builders etc but not for the majority and certainly not for a small child.
