To think it's ok for DS to use a jug to rinse his hair in the bath?

ILoveMyGonk · 07/10/2025 13:44

DS is 11 and takes baths and uses a jug to rinse his hair. It's still the same jug from when he was a baby. It lasted well, but it's finally starting to fall apart.

I told DH I was going to buy a new jug, but he insists that jugs are only for babies and DS should now do without. DS disagrees strongly.

As far as I can find, even for adults, rinsing hair with a cup or jug is a reasonably normal thing to do. On the other hand, the only shampoo-rinsing jugs I can find in shops are in the section for baby stuff.

YABU = Jugs/cups are for babies. DS needs to rinse his hair another way.
YANBU = Rinsing hair with a cup/jug is fine.

Jug is normal without a showerhead. Maybe dh can hire a plumber to fix a shower head hose to the facet pipe if a rinsing jug bothers him. I have no idea how, but my friend had it like that for years, until he married. Shower over bath now.

YANBU. Fill jug with fresh and clean water from the bath tap and rinse out. Much better than "rinsing" hair by laying back and dunking it in soapy/dirty water.

I have a shower after a bath for that reason, you’re just festering in your own dirt 🤣 I do have a shower head attachment on my bath as well but just easier to hop in the shower, do my hair and rinse the dirty water off me.

I don’t tend to have many baths at all, find them a faff. Quick shower - done!

mathanxiety · 07/10/2025 14:14

Why not buy an ordinary plastic jug and skip the special 'shampoo rinsing' jugs?

What is wrong with your husband? What issue does he have with your son's maturity level? Does he think you're baying the boy?

Bathwater is full of soap, skin cells, and dirt. It's not what you want to rinse your hair with.

HugelyExpensiveCrystalDuck · 07/10/2025 14:15

I can’t imagine this even being a conversation. How someone rinses their hair. It’s up to the person whose hair it is how they rinse it.

I used to just lie down and swoosh about.

That’s fine but it’s not as effective at getting shampoo out. The moment put you hair in the water you’ve made the water shampooey, and to rinse you need plain water with no soap or shampoo suds in it.

I don't have much hair. I know this doesn't work for those with long hair, but I have very very short hair. Think head pubes.

Oh me too, I'm not a bath person at all! Showers for me. There's no way I could wash my hair in the bath as it's really long and really thick, I'd never get the soap out with a jug.

TheLizardQueen · 07/10/2025 14:33

Washing your hair in the bath using your dirty bath water is not washing your hair properly. The water is full of dirt, soap, skin cells etc. yuck 🤢

Exactly. I use a small washing up bowl. Which stays in the bathroom. Long thick hair and a bath is all i have.

Vodka1 · 07/10/2025 14:35

Some people hate water on their face (i'm some people!) I don't like baths but if I did, i'd use a jug

My eldest showers, my 7 year old uses a jug & my 5 year old just lays down.

Each to their own, I would never take his jug away 😂

mixedcereal · 07/10/2025 14:36

How is this even a conversation?!

It’s fine. He needs to pick his battles, this is a complete non-issue

And you don’t need a ‘hair rinsing jug’ a basic plastic measuring jug will do nicely

That’s how we did it before showers were invented 😂

IPutASpellOnYou · 07/10/2025 14:37

Who cares if it’s unreasonable or not, if that’s how your son wants to wash his hair that’s his business. Your husband needs to get a life.

JenniferBooth · 07/10/2025 14:37

Replies on this thread are VERY interesting when rinsing long hair when it comes to waiting for a HA repair

Imbusytodaysorry · 07/10/2025 14:38

@ILoveMyGonk I also think dh is weird .
How is this even a topic

Toofficeornot · 07/10/2025 14:40

I don't understand the logic that to rinse your hair with a jug is for a baby. Its for anyone with hair that needs to get water on it. Do you have a shower attachment? Is that what your DH is meaning for him to use? That id an equally valid way of getting water onto hair.
However, shower every morning for a boy coming up to 12 and 14 is probably the way to go rather than a bath.

diddl · 07/10/2025 14:40

What does your husband think that your son should be doing?

As an adult if I washed my hair over the sink or bath I used a jug.
(Plastic measuring jug that usually lived in the kitchen)

PhuckTrump · 07/10/2025 14:45

I use one, and I’m nearly 50. I use it to rinse my shoulders/back. It’s not a baby jug per se, but a large plastic cup. Your DH is picking odd battles here.

CandidRaven · 07/10/2025 14:45

Seems like a complete none issue to me, if he wants to wash his hair with a jug I don't see what the big deal is, your husband is strange

Spookyspaghetti · 07/10/2025 14:45

My dad is in his 70s and has rinsed his hair with a jug his whole life. You can buy a plastic kitchen measuring jug and it won’t look babyish.

Unorganisedchaos2 · 07/10/2025 14:47

I often wash my hair this way as I prefer baths to showers and we've always had a crap shower so its normally more efficient.

I grew up in a council house in the 80's so it was always done that way anyway and if its not broke don't fix it 😉

Seems a bit strange he's so bothered about it though..

Tdcp · 07/10/2025 14:59

I use a jug if I'm having a bath, as does dp and dd... it's really not a weird thing to do.

😆'head pubes' 😆thank you for that image!

MumoftwoNC · 07/10/2025 15:05

It's completely fine. He's not using it like a bath toy, he's using it to rinse his hair.

And even if he was... I love baths and sometimes splash around with dc's toys even if I'm on my own. We've got hook-a-duck, pipes with water wheels, and every shape of cup and jug. If you drop an upside down cup onto the water it goes BLOOP.

Why should fun be restricted to under 5s?!

diddl · 07/10/2025 15:07

Is the issue that you want to get him something animal shaped & the water comes out of it's mouth?
