To ask you to explain the logic - Gary Neville and flags

BewaretheKraken · 06/10/2025 21:19

The people putting up the flags are all about freedom of speech, apparently.

Gary Neville says he removed a flag that was being used negatively.

Now the people who love the flags are encouraging us to cancel Sky Sports to get him sacked - for expressing his opinion.

Almost like the whole “freedom of speech” schtick is a load of bollocks.

There are a lot of Y Ddraig Coch going up around Wales and I really can’t tell if it’s a reaction against Raise the Colours, or people using our flag in a similar way to be a intimidating. If they ARE using our
flagto be twats i’ll be livid.

The latter, I think

Yes I have a horrible feeling you’re right, and it makes me feel sick.

I've got a view about "raising the colours", the shorthand is, I agree with Gary Neville.

But I'm posting on this thread about the stance some take that retired footballers should confine themselves to talking about football.

that view, I think, is utterly and completely misguided.

retired footballers of his ilk, played football to earn a living. By far more important tha n what his occupation was, is the fact he's a human being and has as much right to voice his opinion as anyone of us does.

you might decry the fact that the media takes more notice of a retired footballers opinion than they do of yours, but that's no fault of Neville.

and just in case anyone thinks I'm defending him because I'm a Man U supporter, I have a few letters for you - YNWA. That's where my footballing allegiance lies.

Rylan the tango twt, can't think of anyone's opinion I care less about, he's annoying and he seems to be in *ing everything, random ads, Supermarket Sweep, the revival of Ready Steady Cook (what was wrong with bringing back Ainsley Harriott? I know some people found Ainsley annoying but he's not Rylan annoying and he's not orange with glow in the dark teeth), go away.

Rylan haopens to be a really decent person- kind , generous and funny in real life.
He is absolutely entitled to his opinion and I love to watch him on TV.

hollyblueivy · 08/10/2025 04:54

Gary Neville is right in every single word he has spoken on this clip. He pointed out how much he love this country. He completely gets that the flags being put up at the moment are being weaponised by racist idiots. They are very unfortunately a very loud and overpowering voice on social media at the moment and I really hope it is not a case of those who shout the loudest gets heard.

Zanatdy · 08/10/2025 05:17

Neville is right, and good on him. You’re also right, very hypocritical.

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 08/10/2025 06:46

Terrorist attacks have been occurring here for a long time, so, i think he’s talking out of his arse, if he thinks that the recent flags are anything to do with the latest one.

He’s particularly wrong due to who the victims were, what day it was, where they were killed; and who the perpetrator was.

Gary Neville is a property developer these days. Some contractors had put flags on one of his building sites and he ordered them taken down. That's why he brought the topic up.

ScholesPanda · 08/10/2025 14:02

The only free speech they care about is their own.

He was from a working class family originally and played for a football team partly financed by the kind of men he is now hating on. I think they are annoyed and he could have made his point without targeting ‘angry white men’.

Edited

I take offence that you are lumping football fans in with the "angry middle aged white men" he references. They are a small section of football fans and an even smaller section of society. He is well within his rights to remove flags from his development sites if he feels they are not being used in a way appropriate to his business.

I think cancel culture is wrong. I think it would be wrong for sky's advertisers to get together and all say they will pull away from sky unless they sack neville.

I do not think that individual consumer boycotts of people or companies is cancel culture - it is the only tool we have.

Softcitrusfruit · 08/10/2025 14:07

Our British Values, which surely the ‘flag bearers’ support and our flag represents - include tolerance of others. (amongst other things).

GasPanic · 08/10/2025 14:07

No sports fan is going to cancel their sports channel because a presenter may express political opinions they don't like off channel.

Well, almost no one. You might find a couple out of the millions of subscribers.

That said I do like my sport to be as free as is reasonably possible from any sort of politics. If I want political opinion/discussion I'll watch some people who actually know something about it on Newsnight.

You are right and therefore he hasn't done anything wrong.

All flag flying is subject to some standard conditions
All flags must be:

  • be maintained in a condition that does not impair the overall visual appearance of the site
  • be kept in a safe condition
  • have the permission of the owner of the site on which they are displayed (this includes the Highway Authority if the sign is to be placed on highway land)
  • not obscure, or hinder the interpretation of official road, rail, waterway or aircraft signs, or otherwise make hazardous the use of these types of transport
  • be removed carefully where so required by the planning authority

Subject to compliance with the standard conditions, there are 3 categories of flag:
(a) flags which can be flown without consent of the local planning authority
(b) flags which do not need consent provided they comply with further restrictions (referred to as “deemed consent” in the Regulations)
(c) flags which require consent (“express consent”)

Yanbu - Gary Neville is right.

MoFadaCromulent · 08/10/2025 14:25

Because the right are absolute snowflakes who get triggered by people who don't agree with them.

They hate free speech and are absolutely desperate to promote cancel culture wherever they can

LlynTegid · 08/10/2025 14:31

Gary Neville I agree with on this. I know it is still a bit of a surprise to find a footballer or former footballer be articulate on a political issue, even so, there is nothing wrong with using being well known to speak about such matters.

IamaBluebird · 08/10/2025 14:37

I have a flag , it’s up ready for football tomorrow. It will then be put away safely, it’s very old and precious to me.

I must have imagined all those videos of people losing their minds and having a meltdown when Trump got elected again. Also must have imagined people trying to get JKR cancelled for years. I don’t think it’s the right that gets triggered and believes in cancel culture.
