To ask if anyone else eats all day?

user112256479 · 06/10/2025 16:43

I've always been a grazer, most days the only real meal I eat is dinner. I'm not a big breakfast person, so am up by around 6:30 and mostly don't eat before noon. Not fasting, though, as I have a tea with a splash of milk first thing and then a coffee with a spoonful of creatine and some cream after I walk the dog.

It seems to work ok for me, but almost no one seems to eat that way.

I do, in addition to normal mealtimes, and it seems to be a genetic thing with the women in my family! It is with great surprise that we are all of normal weights and in good health.

Fortunately, for me, I have a very physical job that means I have more trouble keeping weight on! Thus, I never have to worry about my waistline... just potential diabetes or some other health problem linked to diet!

Yes, I do think there's a genetic component to it as my Mum is similar and one of my DC is too, and we're all of normal weight and healthy too.

just potential diabetes or some other health problem linked to diet!

Do you mean because of the food choices or from frequency?

I don’t eat breakfast and never have since I left school. In the beginning it was because I worked shifts and started work at 7.15am so couldn’t face getting up early enough to have breakfast and now it’s because I take medication that has to be taken an hour before food so again I can’t be bothered to get up an hour earlier to take it just so I can have breakfast before I leave the house.
i couldn’t snack like this during the day though - I think it I’d end up over eating by grazing constantly but also never feeling full.
Clearly it’s fine for you OP as you are a healthy weight for your height. We’re all different.

Yes, I think it's partially everyone seeming to monitor their blood sugar and talking about the benefits of fasting that's got me thinking about this.

The only days I have like this are when I have a bit of a “nothing day” and I’m bored, thankfully very rarely!

Mywindow · 09/10/2025 09:33

do you have a daughter?

I mean, each to their own if this is what suits you then crack on. Personally, it will drive me a bit mad all this nibbling here and picking at something there and never properly sitting down to eat anything (I know you said you have dinner, but you get my point).

I like to eat and then forget about it until the next meal. I would find it really impractical to have to constantly have snacks on me in case I need to nibble something.

But it doesn’t really matter what would suit me. If you’re happy like eating like this, then I don’t see that there’s anything much wrong with it.

I don't actually bring snacks out with me. I'm perfectly capable of going without, but then still fill up quickly at meals.

It's my preferred way to eat, but I can cope on the frequent occasions life doesn't lend itself to that.

Yes

And have you told her as many times as you’ve mentioned on this thread how you quickly you get full up and can only handle small portions?

Mywindow · 09/10/2025 10:13

Presumably you’re at home…. A lot

Sagaciously · 09/10/2025 10:27

I guess I’m a faster, although I don’t label it as such, it’s just the way I eat. I never, ever graze.

I don’t have breakfast and typically, won’t eat anything until 2pm at the earliest. Yesterday that comprised of two rice cakes with houmous. I then have dinner at about 8. I didn’t bother with dinner yesterday as my husband is away and he’s the cook. But normally it would be something like salmon with lentils or baked vegetables.

I’m thin, but I really have to watch what I eat as I put weight on very easily. So yesterday, I ate sod all, but most days I aim to stick to 1000 calories or fewer.

And have you told her as many times as you’ve mentioned on this thread how you quickly you get full up and can only handle small portions?

Until university, she'd been living with me since birth, and she's not unobservant, so it's not like it's happening in secret. It's a bit of a family joke that someone else will always finish my meal in a restaurant, and sometimes they tell me (jokingly) to order something they like. But she's more of a meal eater than I am, so if you're hoping I've created an eating disorder in my DD I think you'll be disappointed.

Presumably you’re at home…. A lot

I work mostly from home, so tend to be home about 2 or 3 days a week, although that varies depending on what projects I'm doing, and in and out on weekends. I assume you're making some kind of unpleasant, unhelpful implication here, but it's going over my head. Would you like to spell it out?

And have you told her as many times as you’ve mentioned on this thread how you quickly you get full up and can only handle small portions?

This thread is literally about that. It's the point of it. I suppose everything that everyone posts about is assumed to be a constant topic of constant conversation irl?

I've just tallied up what I've consumed today since noon. Each line is for a different foray.

1 Hard boiled egg, 1 organic rye cracker with butter
left over steamed tender stem broccoli dipped in yuzu mayo
1/2 mug of left over vegetable barley soup (homemade)
1 apple dipped in kefir yoghurt
a few roasted pumpkin and sunflower seeds
4 Haribo gummies
1/2 leftover chicken thigh (with skin) and a few forkfuls of kimchi
1/4 of a mango
1 cup matcha
1 cup tea with milk, organic rye cracker with nut butter and thin smear of raspberry jam

I honestly have no idea what the calorie count of this would be. Going to try to add it up later. It seems like a lot more food than most people on here eat in a day.

@AmusedMember Just about to go for my run now!

DH is making dinner. It's going to be roasted sea bass, creamed spinach, salad and mushroom risotto (apparently). I'm a small portion dinner eater.

That's not a lot of food. Just frequent eating mayb, try eating full meals should help you go 3 to 4 hours between eating.

Meadowlands · 06/10/2025 22:15

Although I'm not really hungry at breakfast, I make myself eat some - usually a bowl of porridge with mixed seeds and banana.
I find that if I don't, I am so hungry by about 10 that I eat the contents of the kitchen !!

similar story here, so I made myself some simple granola and a simple blueberry compote (going to try strawberry then cherry next) to freeze and add Greek yog to a jar the night before, top with a cube of frozen compote so it defrosts and in the morning I mix it with flaxseeds add some granola and its a very fast breakfast. Breakfast was always a chore. I have it with water and tea. Lunch is always the issue unless I have left overs.

I’m not clear whether the op thinks it’s a lot or a little? 😵‍💫

Chillychock · 09/10/2025 14:09

Fine if WFH and no especially preoccupied

But what about the 2/3 days you’re in the office? Do you pack a suitcase of little snacks?

If you have something to add that's pertinent to my question, I'm happy to engage in good faith. If you're just coming on because you think it's an opportunity to be rude to someone, maybe at least read all my posts first? It's not difficult.

I've answered that question at least once.

How far off retirement are you? Looks like you’ll spend it in the kitchen grazing!

all the back and forth back and forth…. Sounds so tedious to me to spend a day like this. The total food consumed though seems healthy and adequate by the end of the day but I honestly don’t have the time or inclination to be spending 2/3 days a week eating like this.

I’m definitely a 3 meals, done, dusted and get on with living type.

Mangoduck · 09/10/2025 18:09

Oooh massive kimchi lover here!

but not just a tablespoon and then depart kitchen!

I have it with two poached eggs on sourdough and either avocado or smoked salmon. In fact… that’ll be dinner tomorrow! Deeeeeelicious!

Thatmoves · 10/10/2025 06:19

My great aunt is like this whenever I pop in to see her. Nibble nibble nibble. You can only eat like this if you’re at home most of the day and surely quite bored or at a loose end.

Next time you find yourself wandering to the kitchen, divert course to front door and go out for a walk, return home and make a sandwich?

Thatmoves · 10/10/2025 06:20

Although if you’re happy with spending so much of your life in the kitchen with your head in the fridge or cupboard, which you appear to be, crack on

We’re complete opposites. I LOVE food and love eating lots of different things through the day rather than just three big meals. I’m quite small and struggle to eat a lot in one go so grazing allows me to eat all the different things I would like to eat in a day without feeling stuffed or overfull. I’m not saying this is the right way, but it has always worked for me (until the menopause hit and now I’m having to accept that I can’t eat all the things I want to it a day without getting fatter 😢)

Yes, it's pretty much exactly this for me!

@Mangoduck

I don't know. I don't have any real plans to retire as I love what I'm doing an only take on projects that I'm interested in. And, as I've said several times, it tends to be when I'm trying to really synthesise a lot of information into a coherent whole and I tend to get up and pace around, look out at the garden, etc. while I'm thinking. Out of curiosity, what does 'get on with living' mean? I'm curious what you think I'm missing out on.

I've never mixed kimchi and smoked salmon, might have to try that!

As I've said, it tends to be while I'm working, so neither bored nor at a loose end, just fidgety and hungry (I think). I don't know. We live in London so I tend to do quite a bit of walking - I already walk the highly energetic dog, walk to shops, the gym, yoga, coffee, friends' houses, meetings for the charity I'm involved with. I'm not sure I need more.

so why start a thread about how you spend the day with your “head in the fridge or cupboard” and “eat all day”?

but then go to pains to tell us how actually.,, you don’t!

Baffling

A mixture (I admit that I like chocolate, and there is sugar in everything these days!), plus a genetic test suggested possibly being more prone to diabetes.

Premiumflopped · 11/10/2025 15:13

I can’t make head nor tail whether @user112256479 eats all day and spends her time peering into the kitchen cupboards for food to graze on…. Or she doesn’t because she lives a very full life meeting friends, doing yoga and on charity meetings!!
