Aibu to have booked a hotel because of woodlice?

We are staying in a cottage for 3 nights, 2 DD's and me. Arrived last night to find place infested with woodlice. There were at least 50 in shower tray and finding them in all rooms.

Owner and husband came out at 10pm, never had issue before, hoovered, bleached drains etc. Dd2 HATES bugs. She had her own room but slept with me - until found one of the wee buggers on the headboard.

I've had no sleep.

Have booked us into a hotel for next 2 nights. Part of me wonders whether we should just put up with it? Would you expect a refund? Part refund? Cost us £800 for 3 nights.

Going to be a long day.

Them and dragonflies, are my worst nightmare insects. I couldn't have stayed and I don't believe that this is the first incident with woodlice. I'd want at least my hotel refunding. Really you should get a refund for the two days.

LancashireButterPie · 06/10/2025 07:33

I am absolutely phobic about these hideous things. I would say the cottage must be very damp to have so many.
YADBU to request some recompense.

Puzzledtoday · 06/10/2025 07:35

A holiday cottage crawling with bugs is not fit for purpose. I’d ask for a refund.

thetooththewholetooth · 06/10/2025 07:37

Not so many about this morning (couple in shower, couple scuttling about the hall) but I had a delightful dream about having lice.

IMO it would have been better to stay one night at the hotel and check out the cottage again the next day. But you’re on your holidays and can see why you just wanted a quick solution.

Yes, I would expect a partial refund. Enjoy the rest of your trip.

Redflagsabounded · 06/10/2025 07:41

Did you take photos as evidence?

My cottage usually has a couple trotting round the hall and bathroom, bugs come with the territory in the country, but that sounds disgusting!

thetooththewholetooth · 06/10/2025 07:44

Not here on holiday as such. Scattering my mums ashes this pm. Cottage was meant to be a nice treat for us while we're here.

We only got here around 9 last night, owners here around 10, too late to find somewhere else

a couple of woodlice I can definitely live with but the numbers you’re mentioning sound like a problem. They’ve likely got some serious wood-rot somewhere. Anyway, YABU to expect a partial refund,

Underthinker · 06/10/2025 07:49

My main priorities are usually a pool and breakfast. Woodlice seem like just a nice to have.

PMBiscut · 06/10/2025 07:52

I love woodlice, find them to be charming little things, but I would not be happy with what you’re describing and would definitely be asking for a refund. If you’re paying to stay somewhere it should be in an acceptable condition which this is not.

JayJayj · 06/10/2025 07:57

I would definitely be expecting a full refund. You should not be expected to stay there in that condition.

TheGreatWesternShrew · 06/10/2025 07:58

I would expect a refund for accommodation infected with insects yes

steamingin · 06/10/2025 08:10

Chuckie pigs are harmless but I wouldn't be happy with that many in a property. It normally means the property is damp. One of my children wouldn't have slept at all. I'd expect a full refund.

All the best for the rest of the trip. Sorry for your loss.

Katemax82 · 06/10/2025 08:13

I wouldn't have stayed there...I fucking hate woodlice

Darner · 06/10/2025 08:15

I quite like wood lice, but I can’t think of the last time I saw even a single one. This infestation is not ok and they should refund you. They probably have damp timber floors and it’s just a bit yuck.

UrticaDioca · 06/10/2025 08:15

I once left an AirBNB room in the middle of the night due to it being riddled with spiders and mosquitos so YANBU. I got a full refund, although the host thought I was being dramatic and she was against killing them.

thetooththewholetooth · 06/10/2025 08:22

Owners think it's to do with storm Amy, blocked drains etc. Place doesn't smell damp. Anyway - I'm off to brave the shower...

OP posts:
squashyhat · 06/10/2025 08:26

He shouldn't be letting the place if the drains are blocked!

saveforthat · 06/10/2025 08:26

I get quite a few in my flat. I don't mind them, they're harmless. They keep ending up upside down and I have to turn them over. 50 is quite a lot though.

CurlyKoalie · 06/10/2025 08:41

Generally I don't mind the odd Chuggie - Pig but 50 is too many and not normal. Hope you have photos as I think you have a valid claim but you may need to prove it.

tonyhawks23 · 06/10/2025 08:47

I think the one on the headboard is the actual problem, thats not nice.

CaptainMyCaptain · 06/10/2025 08:50

Seems like a bit of an overeaction to me, they're not harmful. Don't ever go to Cuba is my advice.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 06/10/2025 08:53

Yanbu - take photos and videos and request your money back!!!

How awful. xx

ChocolateCinderToffee · 06/10/2025 08:54

Absolutely not unreasonable. I loathe them.
