To think we should be allowed two cokes as part of the Nando’s bottomless drink deal?

It’s now illegal. Surely people can make their own mind up.
as an occasional treat of course - DH doesn’t drink diet drinks as prefers to just have normal sugar to artificial sweeteners. He’s healthy weight and, exercise regularly and eats well most of the time

im a bit overweight and prefer Diet Coke.

we went to Nando’s today (DS’s (8) choice) as birthday weekend) - and both got soft drinks which come as bottomless - with extra hot chicken.

It seems unfair that I could have refilled 10 times with Diet Coke if I wanted, but DH couldn’t refill a second coke as no longer legal.

I was at a Nandos recently and they no longer include full sugar cola in the bottomless drinks offer, they haven't done for a few years now as said due to the sugar tax.

They just give you the glass and assume you'll have one FS then choose a different drink.

As its been so long now I'm not sure why they don't just serve FS cola from the counter and do away with the FS at the refill station.

It must be recent because I was last in Nandos a few months ago and there was no notice and nothing said about only having one. I did notice that they'd given up on charging more for real coke, as they'd been doing since the sugar tax. Probably because it was impossible to police and many were paying the lower price regardless of what they had. Can't imagine them policing it now, either.

It's not "illegal", it's now against Nando's rules and they're not the police.

However, as someone who avoids sweeteners I agree it's dumb.

In Nando's I get free ice water anyway. Not paying £4 for sweetener shite when I can refill ice water for free.

It is illegal; it’s covered under legislation.

It’s not the government making it illegal. It’s Nando’s removing an item from a bottomless drinks promotion. They could add the extra tax into the cost if they wanted. 🤷🏻‍♀️ They just don’t, because there will be a reason it’s better for this big profit making multinational corporation to not do so. No one is going to stop you paying for 2 drinks, like you would at the pub. And no one is going to stop you swapping drinks, so he gets you a Diet Coke and you get him a full sugar one.

It is the government, not Nando’s. It’s covered under legislation which came in to force at the beginning of October.

This is so mental.

I think it's been a few years, 2022/23, but clearly it's not policed.

JLou08 · 05/10/2025 22:16

Ridiculous law. Surely there are more important things for the government to be doing. Is it still legal to have a Bottomless brunch with unlimited alcohol? Or buy 10 shots of alcohol on an offer?

PorridgeAndSyrup · 05/10/2025 22:16

I DESPISE the taste of sweeteners. They make everything they are in taste vile. Most days I drink nothing but plain tap water, and tea with milk (no sugar). But when I go out for an occasional treat, I want a nice sugary fizzy drink. I used to love a Fanta, but that's got sweeteners in now (even the "full fat" version) so it tastes revolting.

Greggsit · 05/10/2025 20:39

Why wouldn't he just ignore the sign and get a second one? Who going to notice or care?

This

CinnamonBuns67 · 05/10/2025 22:23

I don't see how they're going to police that seen as it's self serve unless they are going to remove the full sugar coke from the machine now.

Glasgowmama88 · 05/10/2025 22:25

A sticker on the machine ain’t stopping me taking a 2nd coke … what they gunna do - phone the police 😂

I can barely tell the difference

I guess you have no tastebuds 🤢 one taste of a drink and I can tell you if there’s sweeteners in it of any kind. Not even just taste, it has a horrible drying sensation in the mouth.

They are both full of chemicals and rubbish.

OK thanks. There was no notice on the drinks machine. I didn't look at the menu.

I enjoyed having proper fanta in Greece. Spain's has sweeteners. Disgusting.

Right now there’s a big sticker on the coke saying it’s illegal to refill. I’m assuming in due course they might take the coke away from the main machine and have it behind the counter?

They probably won’t. But in the mean time just refill it? The police aren’t going to come out and arrest you for having an extra coke 😂

DiscoBob · 05/10/2025 22:59

It's really daft. Coke is the only big brand soft drink left that doesn't have sweeteners.

It's ridiculous. The idea that cramming in around 2000 calories worth of chicken, chips, rice and sauces is a really healthy diet that is only being sullied by the addition of some sugared liquid.

I honestly don't think coke makes people fat. If someone drank nothing but coke but ate very little they wouldn't be fat. I was stick thin when I drank two litres a day.

I bet if you ask in nandos for some sugar sachets they'll give you loads for free. 🙄🤣

FluentOP · 05/10/2025 23:13

If he had water as his second drink that’s a good thing. Coke is full of crap and very unhealthy. Rots your teeth too.

You drank 2 litres of coke a day ! You have a serious sugar addiction. You may have been slim but you were filling your body with rubbish and setting yourself up for future health problems.

DazzleRazzel · 05/10/2025 23:26

What is the difference in price between the regular coke and the artificial shite in Nandos?

I did yeah. Now it's about three cans a week. Glad I reined it in!

OnTheBoardwalk · 05/10/2025 23:31

It’s not allowed as proper coke is not part of the meal deal for a refillable drink

this is what they should say rather than it being illegal

it’s not part of the deal for tax reasons

DazzleRazzel · 05/10/2025 23:32

The sugar tax is

  • Higher Rate:
  • 24p per litre applies to soft drinks with a sugar content of 8g or more per 100ml.

Surely they know how much coke each customer drinks. Assuming it's about a litre why don't they just charge 24p more!

Mustreadabook · 05/10/2025 23:36

CloudSky · 05/10/2025 20:57

It’s getting fucking ridiculous. I hate sweeteners, they taste like shit. They ruin any drink they are in. There is nothing left now that’s untainted, just wait til they reveal more and more issues with all these sweeteners they’ve been poisoning kids with all these years. Let people drink what they want ffs. It isn’t going to stop anyone being fat.

Beer doesn't have sweeteners in!

Ladamesansmerci · 05/10/2025 23:39

Who is going to police it? Just pour a second coke!

Fupoffyagrasshole · 05/10/2025 23:40

I had 2 glasses at Nando’s yesterday even though there was a sign saying 1 only

uh on the met police are probably gonna come for me now
