To think we should be allowed two cokes as part of the Nando’s bottomless drink deal?

It’s now illegal. Surely people can make their own mind up.
as an occasional treat of course - DH doesn’t drink diet drinks as prefers to just have normal sugar to artificial sweeteners. He’s healthy weight and, exercise regularly and eats well most of the time

im a bit overweight and prefer Diet Coke.

we went to Nando’s today (DS’s (8) choice) as birthday weekend) - and both got soft drinks which come as bottomless - with extra hot chicken.

It seems unfair that I could have refilled 10 times with Diet Coke if I wanted, but DH couldn’t refill a second coke as no longer legal.

I do believe artificial sweeteners are bad as well

The sugar tax needs to be abolished, I am so sick of nanny state britain trying to give me cancer instead of possibly consuming extra calories from a drink. It's a huge migraine trigger for most people and I can't believe the govt are happy for children's food and drinks to be full of artificial sweeteners and UPFs instead of normal sugar and salt Confused well, I can, because they are clearly now dependent on the money raised!

Mrsoftandhisstrangeworld · 05/10/2025 21:34

I don't know how people drink 2 glasses of anything without needing a wee all the way home.

LittleOwl153 · 05/10/2025 21:34

Surely 'you' could have had the sugar coke, and 'dh' had the sweatner coke for your second drink... obviously they look the same so who knows which you'd pick up at the table...

I too would have just had the second. But I'd imagine the single servings are coming nandos way...

Or just don't drink fizzy drinks

Gwenhwyfar · 05/10/2025 21:36

"If OP's DH fancied two cokes he could have bought a second. Just don't see the big deal"

Exactly this.
Free drinks are a bonus, not a human right!

Dont even get me started on the salt obsession!!
Not everyone has high BP....!!!
And maybe more children would eat more veg if- shock horror- they were allowed to season it!

The mind boggles. I drink plain water or unsweetened hot drinks 99% of the time.
If, on the very rare occasion, I want a full sugar coke, then I want a full sugar coke.. not some sugar free artificial sweeteners shite! And if im eating out and eating junk, then please dont patronise me and say i can only have one. Fucking ridiculous but what can you do.

This is exactly the same as me.

Normally I only drink water, tea or (occasionally) wine.

But like your DH, on the rare occasion I want a fizzy drink, I want the sugar version. I really can’t stand artificial sweeteners, I can really taste it even if it’s only a little bit, and it sends me a bit fuzzy in the head.

There's a toilet in the restaurant? You go before you leave...
How do you think people manage after a night out drinking?

An 8 year old should never be having bottomless full fat coke….!!!

He had water as his second. He doesn’t drink diet drinks, but would have happily had a second Coke if the signs weren’t there.

If it's from a machine it bears no resemblance to actual Coke anyway

SunnyWarrington · 05/10/2025 21:41

I used to work for Pizza Hut… I’d have to spout that It’s Pepsi, ok? with a big smile knowing full well it’s never ok!
Staff got unlimited soft drinks on shift, and posting this has reminded me of our work-around the Pepsi issue… equal amounts Pepsi, 7up and tango in a pint glass. Looked revolting, but really kept you buzzing on a 1am closing shift!

TheWonderhorse · 05/10/2025 21:43

I drink Coke, proper coke, but as advice for next time, if you get the refill machines which do flavoured Pepsi Max, get the Pepsi Max and add the lime flavouring. It's really nice. The sweetener aftertaste is almost entirely gone.

I don't know about the Nando's machines, I haven't been for ages.

MyElatedUmberFinch · 05/10/2025 21:44

Illegal as in under arrest illegal?

shhblackbag · 05/10/2025 21:45

And don't get me started on calorie counts on menus. My daughter is a recovering anorexic and she doesn't need any reminders of what she might be consuming. She just needs to look at a menu and choose what she fancies/what her body needs.

This resonates. I'm the same. And I do choose my food based on the calories on those occasions, even though I try to ignore it. I can't. I still have some recovering to do.

All the best to your daughter and your family. It's a long road.

ohyesido · 05/10/2025 21:47

I’ve been drinking fat Coke for years and am a size 8. It’s probably not the drink making people fat, it’s the full English, multiple bags of crisps and white bread toast before bed daily that’s responsible

She said the kids had fruit juice. But as a one off why not. It’s unlikely they are going to drink pints and pints of the stuff.
I personally prefer Coke Zero, just from a taste point of view, but I would much rather my kids drink the sugar versions than the artificial sweetener. I remember searching the supermarkets as sugared squash became rare. My kids aren’t overweight, in fact at least one is underweight. Weight is not the only health issue.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 05/10/2025 21:47

He could get another sugary coke if he wanted, he'd just have to pay for it. if something's free/ unlimited people will be encouraged to have more of it than they really want/ need, sugary drinks aren't good for people and not everybody finds it easy to moderate themselves. Banning unlimited sugary drinks means people aren't going to drink it just because it's there, but of course someone thirsty who wont drink the sugar free stuff can choose to pay for a second drink if they prefer.

Shatteredallthetimelately · 05/10/2025 21:48

I was at a Nandos recently and they no longer include full sugar cola in the bottomless drinks offer, they haven't done for a few years now as said due to the sugar tax.

They just give you the glass and assume you'll have one FS then choose a different drink.

As its been so long now I'm not sure why they don't just serve FS cola from the counter and do away with the FS at the refill station.

Some people prefer draft coke over other forms as of course they all taste slightly different. DH, is quite fussy with it - his order of preference is:

  1. glass bottle (best)
  2. draft (like Nando’s /McDs) - assuming the syrup/CO2 setup is correct
  3. can (assuming well in date and stored correctly)
  4. plastic bottle (worst)

I'd go for a wee in the restaurant and then need a wee half way home. But I can't hold more than a pint, as evidenced by my 12 week scans where they ended up having to ask me to drink 1/4 of what they recommended as my bladder just can't take it! I've also never understood how people can have rounds and rounds of drinks on a night out. One half pint of any beverage could easily see me through from 8-11
