To not go to work tomorrow if I'm still ill?

I've been full of a cold all weekend. I've had 13 days off ill since April so I could do with taking no more time off, ideally, but also if I'm too ill to work, I'm too ill. Aibu to be off ill tomorrow if I'm still like this?

Nearly three working weeks off with illness since April is a hell of a lot. You need to go in if it's a standard cold. There will be a lot more over winter.

If your ill your ill. Only you know if you can work or not

Depends if she has a lot of medical conditions or cancer or something

If your ill your ill. Your just a number in your workplace- so quite frankly I'd be putting myself and health first and I'm sure your colleagues will appreciate you doing so.

I really don't get this attitude some people have in the uk of we must force ourselves to go in unless absolutely dying- id hoped the pandemic would change that attitude but sadly hasn't - old habits die hard it seems!

Are you on any performance plan due to that amount of days off? Are the individual days or 1 block of 13?

I'm assuming not as that would have been hugely relevant information and a massive drip feed.

If you're ill, you're ill. Can you get signed off by a GP? If you go in and take the whole company down, they're going to piss and moan anyway.

You can't get signed of from a gp for 1 day you have to self certify for the first 5 days

For a cold I'd go in. Norovirus and the winter bugs are around the corner and you definitely can't go in if being sick.

user2848502016 · 05/10/2025 19:42

High temperature, flu, D&V stay off.
With a cold I would tend to dose myself up with cold & flu meds and get on with it

Pleasealexa · 05/10/2025 19:45

I think it depends on what you do, how long you have been at your workplace and what's your symptoms.

I.e if you work with vulnerable people but if you are in a desk job and its a cold, just take paracetamol and get through. There is chance you will feel better tomorrow after a good night's sleep.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 05/10/2025 19:50

I’d go in for a cold as I did last week! I did struggle a bit for the first couple of days but I got through it and I would have felt so guilty going off sick. I just went to bed early.

I had flu last December and that was the last time I was off sick. I physically couldn’t have worked when I had flu, I whereas I knew I could muddle through with a cold.

CarrotCrusader · 05/10/2025 21:07

Thank you for all your replies. I think I'll be going in unless I get any worse. We're short staffed at the moment so I think the remaining staff member would have difficulty having to do everything themselves.

I feel your dilemma.
I'm currently ill, not back at work until Tues, I hate missing work, funny thing is I always seem to fall ill on a weekend, maybe because I'm "on" all week then relax come the weekend.
I haven't been off since May 2024 but still feel funny about going off sick.
In your case it depends on how poorly you are, if you're too ill to go in that should be the deciding factor

BlueberryLatte · 05/10/2025 21:22

If it's just a cold, I would go in. Different if you have flu or D&V
