Sobbing with the pain, sore throat?

Strawberrysauce3 · 05/10/2025 18:16

I have 0 experience with sore throats or ears but just need some advice

I’ve had some sort of virus for the last week. I’m mostly over it now but have a horrendous sore throat. It has been a 6/10 painwise for the last few days and then over the last 24 hours has genuinely shot up to around a 100/10. I’m not exaggerating when I say I’ve never felt this level of pain before in my entire life. I’m basically climbing the wall with it. Cocodamol/strong nurofen (ibuprofen 400mg) was keeping the pain manageable but over the last few hours it’s become horrendous and nothing is touching it. I’ve genuinely never been in this level of pain before. I’ve looked in my throat- my tonsils are not swollen, no white spots, no quinsy. So it’s just viral. Does that mean there’s no point contacting nhs24 since antibiotics etc won’t help anyway? I really don’t have it in me to go through the whole contacting and waiting for a call back and to go along to an appointment and then for them to say it’s viral just give it more time

the worst part is I still have a bit of a cough (I’m asthmatic so the virus to my chest) and I keep needing to cough but everytime I cough it’s absolutely horrific. I’ve been sobbing all afternoon with it. And I can sort of feel the pain through both ears now too

has anyone ever had this before and got any advice? The closest I’ve ever had to this was a massive deep dental access which was excruciating but this is far far worse

Sounds like covid to me. Strepsils worked for me.

I’ve tried stepsils etc and it’s literally doing nothing unfortunately. The painkillers were keeping it at bay but that’s completely stopped working

I thought it was Covid but I’ve done 3 tests on 3 separate days and all negative

Can you get hold of a difflam spray or similar? I have had a lot of issues with sore throats since having glandular fever as a teen and as horrible as they are the sprays do help numb it.

ResusciAnnie · 05/10/2025 18:22

If it’s in your windpipe/lungs then nothing you eat or drink ie strepsils is going to help (unless they have painkillers in which obviously will be absorbed into your bloodstream via your stomach).
Agree sounds like Covid.
Just think this time next week you’ll most likely be all better!

RandomMess · 05/10/2025 18:22

Yes the numbing spray is amazing as is gargling with dissolved aspirin

londongirl12 · 05/10/2025 18:22

Sounds like tonsillitis pain wise. Is it red? Maybe contact the doctor tomorrow. I had a horrendous case of it a few years ago. Really painful even to sip water. Lost a few lbs though 😂

Cadenza12 · 05/10/2025 18:23

Phone 111 and get some advice. That level of pain needs medical attention. Hope you're feeling better soon.

Westfacing · 05/10/2025 18:23

To help ease the pain eat some ice cream.

LakieLady · 05/10/2025 18:24

If you've got some soluble aspirin, gargling with it may help.

I get a really sore throat with every cold, and it definitely seems to make a difference.

Honestly I can barely even talk let alone swallow, I’ve never had anything like this before it’s awful!

You might have a quinsy @Strawberrysauce3
Peri-tonsillar abscess.

Call 111 and get yourself seen today.

Peritonsillar Abscess (Quinsy): Symptoms, Treatments & Causes

A peritonsillar abscess is a pus-filled pocket that forms near one of your tonsils. It causes pain and swelling. In severe cases, it can block your throat.

Yeah it looks red to me but I don’t know if that’s normal or how red it’s supposed to look if you see what I mean 😭

Is it possible to have that if my tonsils look normal? I googled it and looked at the pics and I don’t have any white spots like in the pics x

I remember having an horrendous sore throat years ago. Swallowing was so painful that I had to keep spitting into the loo. Dh brought me home a what I can only describe as an anaesthetic type mouth wash. You gargled it to basically
numb your throat. I'm hopeless at gargling so wasn't for me. Not sure if you still can get something like this.

Strawberrysauce3 · 05/10/2025 18:27

I tried the spray the other day when the pain was actually milder but it didn’t help then, I’ll try it again to see if it makes a difference

Bambamhoohoo · 05/10/2025 18:28

I don’t think this sounds in any way normal

do you have a temperature?

when you say10/10 pain what’s your previous experience of that? How is it compared to childbirth, pneumonia, broken bones etc?!

ConBatulations · 05/10/2025 18:29

Try ice cubes.

Strefen may help but you can't take them with ibuprofen.

You can try the difflam spray but chances are it will be very short lived relief but maybe long enough to eat or drink something.

Hope you feel better soon.

Laffydaffy · 05/10/2025 18:29

Your level of pain needs to be looked at. Also, your asthma could become a problem, especially if it hurts to cough. If nothing else, anxiety and pain can make it worse. Please call the doctor or go to emergency.

Theextraordinaryisintheordinary · 05/10/2025 18:30

Aspirin gargle to numb

I’ve never had any of them but I had a really nasty large deep abcess under my tooth which at the time was the worst thing I’ve ever experienced pain wise and I was one step of smashing it out my face myself. At the time that was probably the worst thing I’ve ever felt but this easily tops it

OP posts:
Bambamhoohoo · 05/10/2025 18:30

And if Cocodamol/strong nurofen was only just keeping the pain controlled, a numbing spray or ice cream isn’t going to touch the sides 😭

Yes, you need a doctor to look right down your throat.

I think you need to call 111- this pain isn’t part and parcel of a virus. I think you must get it checked x

Cerialkiller · 05/10/2025 18:31

Just because you can't see anything doesn't mean it's not severe enough to see a doctor. A sudden increase or very severe pain is a hall mark of bacterial infection. If could be peri tonsillitis (I've had this and would honestly rather go through labour again!) or any number of things. Go to the doctor.

Stagger doses of painkillers. Save a dose of cocodamol for bed time as it's a cough suppressant. Alternate hot drinks and iced water, take an antihistamine in case the cough is an immune reaction, take a decongestant in case it's something causing the irritation. Double check you aren't overdosing anything, they put paracetamol in lots of things now. I try to buy just the single ingredients eg decongestant now to avoid this. Ibuphrophen is anti inflammatory so will help swelling and pain. I alternative this with codine/cocodamol.
