Sobbing with the pain, sore throat?

Strawberrysauce3 · 05/10/2025 18:16

I have 0 experience with sore throats or ears but just need some advice

I’ve had some sort of virus for the last week. I’m mostly over it now but have a horrendous sore throat. It has been a 6/10 painwise for the last few days and then over the last 24 hours has genuinely shot up to around a 100/10. I’m not exaggerating when I say I’ve never felt this level of pain before in my entire life. I’m basically climbing the wall with it. Cocodamol/strong nurofen (ibuprofen 400mg) was keeping the pain manageable but over the last few hours it’s become horrendous and nothing is touching it. I’ve genuinely never been in this level of pain before. I’ve looked in my throat- my tonsils are not swollen, no white spots, no quinsy. So it’s just viral. Does that mean there’s no point contacting nhs24 since antibiotics etc won’t help anyway? I really don’t have it in me to go through the whole contacting and waiting for a call back and to go along to an appointment and then for them to say it’s viral just give it more time

the worst part is I still have a bit of a cough (I’m asthmatic so the virus to my chest) and I keep needing to cough but everytime I cough it’s absolutely horrific. I’ve been sobbing all afternoon with it. And I can sort of feel the pain through both ears now too

has anyone ever had this before and got any advice? The closest I’ve ever had to this was a massive deep dental access which was excruciating but this is far far worse

Covid. My sister and parents have had this very recently, and all said it's the worst they've ever felt with a virus. My mum is one of those people who is never ill, and if she is just carries on as normal, and this one put her on her arse. It will pass -keep on with the painkillers, water and as much sleep as you can manage. All of my lot said they it was improving after about a week.

Spidey66 · 05/10/2025 19:00

Sounds like tonsillitis

CameForAVacationStayedForTheRevolution · 05/10/2025 19:03

Dequacaine lozenges are the best thing ever for a sore throat, much better than strepsils. Have googled and think they’re now called dequadin….not sure if they’re exactly the same. But agree if the pain is this bad you should see a dr in case it’s a quinsy.

AnnoyedMum2 · 05/10/2025 19:03

I would also suspect a quinsy. I had one once and I was crying in pain, asking my parents not to go to work and leave me - I was an adult who had left home and went back to stay with them as I felt so unwell. Go to A&E, hope you feel better soon.

I’ve tried stepsils etc and it’s literally doing nothing unfortunately. The painkillers were keeping it at bay but that’s completely stopped working

I thought it was Covid but I’ve done 3 tests on 3 separate days and all negative

I had this with Covid, it was awful
I tested negative too

AxolotlEars · 05/10/2025 19:05

A quinsey, maybe? They are horrifically painful.

DelilahBucket · 05/10/2025 19:10

This does sound like at best tonsillitis, at worst quinsy. I used to alternated ibuprofen with soluble cocodamol (mixed with some squash as it tastes awful). About the only thing I could swallow was really thick chocolate milkshake (the fresh stuff). I couldn't even swallow my own saliva and the ear pain was the worst. You do need media l attention here OP. That level of pain isn't normal for anything. I did have quinsy misdiagnosed as glandular fever, similar symptoms I believe.

WimbyAce · 05/10/2025 19:12

I would call 111. My colleague had quinsy and was struggling through but luckily it was discovered on the cusp of it bursting.

BitOutOfPractice · 05/10/2025 19:13

Oh goodness you poor thing. My mom had this last week and says She’s never felt a sore throat like it. A throat spray worked for her. Can you get hold of one? I think it might be Covid.

hope you feel better soon 🌺

ComebackStory · 05/10/2025 19:16

How do you feel other than the throat pain op. I had this a couple of years ago, couldn’t even sip water. I also felt like I’d been hit by a bus. After 5 days i couldn’t cope anymore and ended up at minor injuries for help. I had strep throat and was put on antibiotics, by that evening I was much improved I was amazed!

Ceejay9 · 05/10/2025 19:17

If your struggling to even swallow saliva, could it be glandular fever?

CornishTiger · 05/10/2025 19:17

Might be worth getting a strep throat test. They won’t test you at doctors generally and sent me away. I did an e consult after friend suggested getting a test from Tesco. It was Strep A. I was so ill with it. Cried in pharmacy queue and husband went instead

AngelsWithSilverWings · 05/10/2025 19:20

I've got Covid - had it for a week and a half now and still getting over it. I tested on day two of symptoms ( we get free tests because DD is immunosuppressed )

The sore throat was dreadful. I got DH to go out and get me an anti inflammatory throat spray as soon as I felt the pain coming as I remembered from the last time I had Covid that it really helped.

Ilikeviognier · 05/10/2025 19:32

I’ve had quinsy theee times, was like swallowing glass. Never felt pain like it - but could not see anything in my mouth. You need someone with experience to take a look if the pain is that bad. You need hospital if it is quinsy. It will not go away - regular antibiotics do not shift it,

Nestingbirds · 05/10/2025 19:52

You need to have this checked op

We have just had the new strain of covid and all experienced agonising throats. Mine swelled up and I couldn’t actually properly swallow.

Our tests were negative - but once I was hospitalised (I had heart issues) they are now monitoring and it was Covid.

Yours may not be, and you should be checked this evening.

TheExcitersblowingupmymind · 05/10/2025 20:04

Gargle TCP dilute it'i forgot to do this when I gave to DW .
Chlorasceptic spray works for a wee while.

CrystalSingerFan · 05/10/2025 20:06

Not sure if this is helpful, OP, but I had something like this years ago. (Pre-Covid.) No idea then (or now) about quinsey.

Hugely painful sore throat for days. Had a few in the past. Nothing as bad as this. Then I managed to eat a small bit of crispy toast. And something happened (I presume crunchy toast broke the abscess.) I could feel some nasty liquid move down my throat. And the pain was gone!

Go back to your GP or A&E.

menopausalmare · 05/10/2025 20:10

Icy water might numb the pain.

Halloumicheeseislife · 05/10/2025 20:12

berrypop · 05/10/2025 18:45

I had Hib Disease a few years ago which started with a horrendous sore throat and developed into a cough. It needed antibiotics. I would contact 111 this evening or GP in the morning.

Edited

I was admitted with epiglottitis last year due to Hib. It was so painful that I couldn't swallow and couldn't finish a sentence. A&E were a but dismissive of me until ENT passed an endoscope and then i was admitted! I echo the comments of please seek medical help as it could be more serious than you think.

WaryCrow · 05/10/2025 20:13

Get thee to a dr, if painkillers have stopped touching it. Mine turned out to be strep throat when it was like that, and I was told it could have been glandular fever too. That was before covid. Plenty of things it could be.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 05/10/2025 20:13

Have you gargled salt water???? That helped when painkillers didn't touch my sore throat x

Newname71 · 05/10/2025 20:15

Please go and get yourself checked by out of hours. I ended up with sepsis from tonsillitis last year. I honestly thought I was dying.

rainbowsandraspberrygin · 05/10/2025 20:34

Strawberrysauce3 · 05/10/2025 18:39

Yeah I think I’m going to. I could just cry at the thought of no doubt waiting 10 hours for a call back and having to speak over the phone because it’s so bloody painful, and the online option doesn’t cover Scotland 😭

Do you have anyone who can speak on your behalf?? With you next to them for vital bits.

gargling salt water is always my go to for sore throats. But this sounds more than your standard sore throat and I’d worry about swelling affecting your breathing. You also need to keep fluid up to prevent dehydration and if you can’t swallow then that in itself needs medical attention

Topjoe19 · 05/10/2025 20:40

Please do get seen OP. Let us know how you get on.

Tulipvase · 05/10/2025 20:41

I don’t think a lack of white spots means it can’t be bacterial tonsillitis.

Generally though I don’t think AB’s are needed for tonsillitis as it is a self limiting illness but that’s assuming it is tonsillitis and nothing worse.

But it is horrible and I hope you get better soon.
