Sobbing with the pain, sore throat?

I have 0 experience with sore throats or ears but just need some advice

I’ve had some sort of virus for the last week. I’m mostly over it now but have a horrendous sore throat. It has been a 6/10 painwise for the last few days and then over the last 24 hours has genuinely shot up to around a 100/10. I’m not exaggerating when I say I’ve never felt this level of pain before in my entire life. I’m basically climbing the wall with it. Cocodamol/strong nurofen (ibuprofen 400mg) was keeping the pain manageable but over the last few hours it’s become horrendous and nothing is touching it. I’ve genuinely never been in this level of pain before. I’ve looked in my throat- my tonsils are not swollen, no white spots, no quinsy. So it’s just viral. Does that mean there’s no point contacting nhs24 since antibiotics etc won’t help anyway? I really don’t have it in me to go through the whole contacting and waiting for a call back and to go along to an appointment and then for them to say it’s viral just give it more time

the worst part is I still have a bit of a cough (I’m asthmatic so the virus to my chest) and I keep needing to cough but everytime I cough it’s absolutely horrific. I’ve been sobbing all afternoon with it. And I can sort of feel the pain through both ears now too

has anyone ever had this before and got any advice? The closest I’ve ever had to this was a massive deep dental access which was excruciating but this is far far worse

The way you describe the sore throat is like when I had glandular fever. It was like swallowing knives. I was 18 and I'm now mid 50s butcid never felt pain like it in my throat.

A simple blood test is all that's needed to see if you have it.

I hope you feel better soon - it sounds horrendous.

I had similar last year and it was a throat infection. Absolutely awful, couldn’t swallow either. Pain 10/10.

Back21970 · 06/10/2025 01:18

I had similar years ago, couldn’t even swallow my own saliva and had to spit - I was also actually crying with pain.

I phoned my doctors surgery and picked up antibiotics about 2 hours later - the receptionist said there was something going round.

By the time I went to bed that night most of the pain was gone and I could actually swallow again.

Definitely phone your doctor.

Don't worry qualified nurse practitioner, another poster has already diagnosed covid and has advised that the patient should get some strepsils as they worked for her.

😂

Nothankyou2025 · 06/10/2025 02:15

Get lozenges with local anaesthetic in them. I was gobbling half a packet a day when I had the Covid throat, and it helped a lot. Also use anti inflammatories and pain killers,

Mixing ibuprofen with panadol, combining the two types of pain relief has a much stronger effect.

And see a doctor ASAP.

coxesorangepippin · 06/10/2025 02:57

I'd get an appointment asap

It looks like tonsillitis and yes the pain is horrendous

Jasmine222 · 06/10/2025 05:46

OP regarding your question the tonsils are the red inflamed bits around the sides, but googling and analyzing isn't the answer, you need a doctor. Strep A tonsilitis is just red and inflamed, not white puss.

HeyThereDelila · 06/10/2025 06:25

Ring 111. If it’s tonsillitis or strep throat you need to be seen asap. Don’t put it off and don’t be fobbed off in case it’s a bad infection which spreads.

Before I was diagnosed with coeliac disease I used to get the most awful sore throats roughly every 6 weeks. My immune system was just fighting on too many fronts. Now I’m gluten free the problem has gone.

That’s not a suggestion about you going GF! But you should ask your GP about screening for auto immune diseases.

I had bacterial laryngitis a few months ago and it was very much like what you describe. It was so horrifically painful that I couldn’t sleep. Went to the doctor and got antibiotics right away. The pain diminished in about 12 hours.
Pain killers didn’t help at all.
Best of luck. I’ve been there and wish you a speedy recovery

euff · 06/10/2025 06:45

Another vote for drinking/ gargling with soluble aspirin if you can. None of the pills/ sweets touched mine. Haven’t tried the sprays though.

liveforsummer · 06/10/2025 07:19

There are other types of throat infections, not just tonsillitis. Mostly viral but you won’t know unless you go to the dr. Get yourself an emergency appointment today. Hoping you get sorted soon

not4profit · 06/10/2025 09:53

My young adult son had similar but his throat was extremely swollen and he couldn't speak and was barely able to swallow anything. GP referred to A&E where glandular fever was diagnosed but he was given IV steroid and antibiotics while there which began to help really quickly to reduce the swelling and pain.

Sassylovesbooks · 06/10/2025 11:25

Could very well be Strep Throat. You need to see a GP, as you'll need antibiotics. The level of pain you are experiencing isn't a normal sore throat, it's a bit more than that, in my opinion.

Violinist64 · 06/10/2025 11:29
