Expecting too much from a manager?

My team structure is a manager and another colleague. Colleague has been promoted, and this was not an advertised role, our manager just put him forward.

I have no issue with someone getting a promotion at all and I do think he deserved it. My issue is that I found out from an all company email (other promotions in the business).

I think due to the structure of the team a conversation from my manager would have gone a long way. As it could impact my job role with colleague now being more senior and the way the work is distributed. I also feel shit, I can happy for someone whilst also feeling sad that I wasn’t deemed good enough.

Am I expecting too much?

What is your relationship like
otherwise with this manager?

Is it possible it didn’t occur to the manager that you were a candidate and so having a chat with you about it didn’t cross managers mind?

And the colleague didn’t tell you either?
