I'm currently sat in a and e and I have nothing to think about.

My husband said do you think and a e doctors and nurses treat more then one person of the same name each day.

Not just doctors or nurses but teachers, sales people. How many times a day see or treat someone with the same name

Please forgive me I am very bored. My son has fallen asleep while waiting to hear of max fax.

I worked for a large international company as a trainee. I got some complex queries on US taxation I didn't know where to start with. It was a relief to discover I had a tax colleague in the US with the same first name, middle and surname 😅.

spoonbillstretford · 04/10/2025 06:03

My grandmother didn't have to change her name on marriage as she had the same surname as my grandfather. A common one. Makes genealogical research more tricky!

Once I was in a&e with someone with a very similar name, same surname and first name was very similar began with same first letter and they kept getting us mixed up. It was actually really dangerous

Well this is something ID cards would actually help with! In my country you don't need to worry about having the same name as someone else in a&e because the staff will always check your identification number and all your notes will be connected with that number. When someone comes to take your blood they don't ask your name, they ask for that number instead as that can't be mixed up. Same with giving medication, always checking the number.

I was looking at someone’s name the other day, it was like Claire Jones or something, and I thought god I bet there are at least 5 of those in this town alone! Pretty good if you don’t want to stand out but I can’t even remember it as it was that much of a nothingy name.

I see multiples of first names all the time in my job - Ian, Tom, Charlotte, Sarah, Sophie and Emily and Jane! But not the same first and last.

Not as common as Gary Jones. I suspect.

But I do know a Claire jones

Ghhbiuj · 04/10/2025 06:13

Perhaps think about how many people you know and how many have the same name.

BreakfastOfChampignons · 04/10/2025 06:16

I live in a small town (population about 11,000) and there are 3 of us with not just the same first and last name, but also the same middle initial. How do I know? We all married into the same family! When my GP notes are accessed, a huge warning flashes up on the screen with MULTIPLE PATIENTS OF SAME NAME!

My mother in law had a similar problem. Same first and last name as someone else, including spelling of the first name which has multiple variants, but also the same day and month of birth. Caused no end of issues with hospital letters, dentist appointments, banks etc. before data protection rules were tightened up.

We had 2 sisters start at school with the same names as my girl cats. 😆

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 04/10/2025 06:29

In my son’s primary school class there were 6 girls and 7 boys. 2 of the girls had the same first and last name.

Same name patients are quite common, even on same ward at same time. It’s something to be aware of, especially if you have a common name, to avoid medical mix ups which unfortunately do happen.
if I am aware a patient has a same name other person in the hospital at the same time I always warn them. Especially if you might need a blood transfusion or special drugs and tests.
Make sure the nurses check your NHS number as well as other details. If they are taking blood for tests make sure they label it at the bedside. This is especially important when taking blood for cross matching for a blood transfusion. It’s one of the rules - nurse who takes the blood must label it themselves at the bedside. Don’t let them wander off with unlabelled tubes of blood for someone else to stick he labels on. It’s how mix ups can and do happen.

Everyone in the uk has an individual NHS number which can and should be checked, especially for tests, samples and specimens, drugs and blood transfusions.

Although I'd hate to be 9ft tall I'd have to choose that over being just 9inches. Being that tiny everything would be out of reach all the time, it would take ages to walk anywhere having tiny legs, cutlery would be massive, god everything would be hard.

My friends son (aged 7) asked me if I’d rather have lollipops for fingers or roller skates for feet! 😂 Can’t do much with lollipops can you?

When we moved into our new house we were in the garden calling the name of our missing cat 🐈, and the little boy next door answered! We hadn’t met the neighbours at that point.

Yeah it should be checked but if people with the same name are getting mixed up then they aren't checking it all the time. No one (probably) their nhs number so you can't ask the patient to confirm whereas everyone memorises their id number here, as well as carrying their health insurance card with it on, so can confirm with patient every time.

Would you rather be 9 inches tall or 9ft tall? (One of the ridiculous questions I’ve been asked at work recently!)

9" - I always wanted to be a borrower ever since I saw the film as a child

Hesma · 04/10/2025 06:45

There is another girl in DDs year at school with exactly the same name. It sometimes gets confusing

FeatheryFlorence · 04/10/2025 06:57

I am yooneek. There appears to be no-one anywhere else in the world with my name. I’ve only ever met two people with my date of birth, and one of them is my cousin.

A lot of my extended family surnames are very rare, which has made drawing up my family tree very easy. One is so rare that there are only about seven people in the world with this surname.

Blueberrymuffinsforthewin · 04/10/2025 07:01

Glad to hear you're home.

I work in A&E and literally had this the other day. Exact same name, spelt the same way at the same time. Really confused myself writing their notes.

My DS an A and E resident Dr did, one day had two patients with same name , it did cause a lot of double checking. To make sure they weren't mixed up.

Many years ago in hospital my urine test results were mixed up with an elderly lady’s as we had the exact same name. Lead to me incorrectly being discharged, told there was absolutely nothing wrong with me and was I sure it wasn’t just my period (young male doctor, I wasn’t even on 🙄) despite being in incredible pain, and sent home at 3am. Turns out I had a pretty nasty kidney infection, GP I went to see the next day was livid and encouraged me to put a complaint in to the hospital but I didn’t want to make a fuss.

Wowzel · 04/10/2025 07:26

I work in a&e, we once had two patients with the same name at the same time- we kept them separated and put one in resus so we wouldn't make any medication mistakes etc

I have a very common name - think Jane Smith.

A few years ago; I was at the fracture clinic. I saw the consultant and a junior doctor. As I was walking out through the door, one of them said to the other "we haven't seen Jane Smith yet". I indignantly turned round and said "yes you have! I'm Jane Smith." They laughed and said "oh no, there is another Jane Smirh. She is about 30 years older than you."

I continued on my way, wondering if they were telling the truth or if they were very quick with making up tall tales.

At my next appointment, a few weeks later, I asked the consultant if he had 2 of us Jane Smiths on his books and he assured me he did! I told him I had been wondering if he had simply made up a story to look less embarrassing.

A couple of years later, I was talking to a friend, who started telling me what a coincidence it was because his parents' next door neighbour was called Jane Smitb. And yes, it was the same woman from the fracture clinic.

Your response is odd.

You have a very common name and yet you think a consultant is making up 'tall tales'?

You were 'indignant' about it? Weird.

FightingInAVatOfJellyBabies · 04/10/2025 07:36

Sorry OP, meant to say hope your DC is ok.

Ratafia · 04/10/2025 07:44

Tip for any future visits to A&E with someone else - always chuck a book or two into your bag.

I don’t understand why you think it’s odd.

i would think it highly unusual for there to be two Jane Smiths in the same small group of people. We’re taking a handful of people here not 100s or 1000s.

I would've thought in a predominantly Asian area, the chances of treating more than one Muhammad are quite high.

Only as high as treating multiple smiths, Jones, greys in a predominantly white area
