Day 1 of holiday. Hell.

This will come off really bad I appreciate that but sod it I have to speak my truth.

Day 1 of our family holiday we came to Greece. Have been excited for it. It’s all inclusive which is our second time, last year we did all inclusive and same thing I hated it. Don’t know why I thought it would be different but anyway.

I hate it. The hotel is just crap. The clientele are typical of what you would expect at an all inclusive and I just seriously regret it.

The thing is, I get I’m being a snob. Let’s be honest clearly we have the same budget as these people I’m slagging off (100k combined income) so should probably be a bit more humble, but I can’t. Every fibre of my being feels like I’m not built for this. I want better. I want luxury. I’m sooooo much more at home at high end places, where as the people here would probably feel uncomfortable there and like this better.

is anyone else like this?

What do I do, just avoid all inclusive from now on and stick to nicer hotels but just breakfast, eat out and explore more?

What do people do who are like me but equally don’t have the Dorchester budget?

This is why we never do all inclusive and never will. We are in our fifties and have avoided this hell and stayed in nice hotels of all budgets and sizes but haven’t had to endure awful guests and ‘entertainment’.

You know any evening entertainment is optional right?

I just don't get this sneering attitude. It's so weird. It's like saying 'we would never do self catering. Urgh all that having to stay in someone else's dirty house and having all those rules to follow'.

It's just so weird and it's truly an MN thing. This abject horror, the 'i couldn't last two minutes' - what on a beach?!

The last AI we went to before we had a piano bar so DH and I went ever evening before dinner with a cocktail. You know in a glass with actual proper spirits in etc. last one we did with kids we had a lovely balcony overlooking the beach so we sat there after they'd gone to bed and played cards.

MyElatedUmberFinch · 04/10/2025 13:05

I love an all inclusive for a week once or twice a year. I like to go an excursion/sightsee every other day and then have dinner out the inbetween day. I have a nice little routine, I enjoy many other types of holiday too.
Household income is three times OP’s and I’m not opposed to Tui.

I know, some people are very small minded. Ah well, it means I'm unlikely to encounter them on my holiday so that's fine! We had an amazing AI hotel in Turkey, Barut B Suites. Big apartments, lovely food & drink and own private space on the beach so no fighting for sunbeds!

sciaticafanatica · 04/10/2025 14:04

@PortSalutSherryHelloso you went to the same bar every evening and sat on a balcony?
sounds absolutely shite!

Um no that was different holidays. Can you not read? Literally what is wrong with you?

PortSalutSherryHello · 04/10/2025 14:08

Same bar, 9 different restaurants.

But why the need to call other people's holidays shite? Why? It's just so weird.

Pipsquiggle · 04/10/2025 14:25

Maybe @gilesday has started having a lovely time on holiday.

I think I am a snob, however, I do try to have an open mind as some of the best people I meet on holiday are those who I wouldn't necessarily socialize with at home

sciaticafanatica · 04/10/2025 14:32

@PortSalutSherryHello because I don’t like aI or cruises.
its just not a holiday to me.. I think they are shite!
you would think my holidays are shite!

PortSalutSherryHello · 04/10/2025 14:36

Why? How would you know what holidays I go on? Why would you think you can pigeon hole someone based on a holiday they've been on?
That's what I don't get.

sciaticafanatica · 04/10/2025 14:39

I don’t pigeon hole them, they all group together in their compound / hotel or ship and by doing so pigeon hole themselves @PortSalutSherryHello

PortSalutSherryHello · 04/10/2025 14:41

Compound

Fucking lol. Just utterly bizarre.

I wouldn't think to put do not disturb sign on in evening time before dinner . He walked in by unlocked my locked hotel door opened the closed bathroom door and walked right in. I was actually on the loo at the time. I said shower as it seemed more dignified. I made sure it didn't happen again! Their housekeeping was generally very poor given the amazing eds of the rest of it b

Omg! 😬🫣

Definitely use the DND sign in future whenever you are in the room!!

its the fact that they changed the towels every evening at dinner time rather than when they were cleaning the room in the morning. It makes no sense. I also didn’t want to say in case i am misremembering but there were no DND signs available. There was quite a lot of stupid things I remember being unhappy about in the Ikos odissia in spite of the amazing restaurants and most beautiful beaches.

How can it be shite if the PortSalutSherryHello enjoyed it?

Notagain75 · 04/10/2025 15:37

Stay in somewhere self catering and eat out.
That's what we always do. We earn a lot less than you do. But I would never go on an all inclusive holiday . We like experiencing different food in different restaurants and food cooked freshly not the leftovers from last night's dinner for breakfast or lunch.

Can safely say I've never experienced that.
This is so utterly bizarre.

Me neither. But I am extremely fussy about where we go. I research the holiday with a fine toothed comb before I even think about booking

One might go to the same bar every evening on a self catering holiday, whats wrong with that?

Or one may stay in their villa and go nowhere every night, again nothing wrong with that.

HighLadyofTheNightCourt · 04/10/2025 18:12

MN is so weird about AI and cruises. I read some of these responses and thank fuck I’m unlikely to ever come across them while on holiday!

AI can be amazing, I’ve been to some really luxurious AI hotels and I’ve also done the cheap and cheerful. Always managed to have a good time. Eating in the AI restaurants, going to the entertainment and speaking to other guests has always been optional!

MzHz · 04/10/2025 18:27

You could write off the AI aspect of your hotel and get out and explore a bit? Get onto Tripadvisor for some good suggestions, taxis are usually reasonable or you could rent a car for a couple of days

Generally in hotels like that housekeeping come twice per day: in the morning to do a more thorough clean and change bedding/ towels as needed and then again in the evening for the “turndown service” where they replace any used towels again, do a quick tidy up, turn down the sheets and leave you a chocolate on the pillow usually. Are you saying housekeeping didn’t come during the daytimes? That would be very odd as they’d not have time to clean all the rooms in the evenings while people are out at dinner given some may be back quite early.

MainframeMalfunction · 04/10/2025 20:46

The OP hasn’t replied for two days so I hope that’s a sign she’s having a better time now!

I have already explained what happened and am unsure why you have such an investment in ikos hotels. Tbh i didn’t even leave a review or a complaint of any kind. I was generally happy but their housekeeping was crap. I have no more to say @MainframeMalfunction
