Shamelessly posting for traffic sorry.

Presenting as DVT, 83 year old female.
Been to G.P twice and to the hospital (because of the potential DVT). Have been advised no DVT following a scan but they’ve no idea what it is. Feels like the blood is boiling, hot and painful, unable to sleep, feels rough, painful at the back of the leg where strangely the skin looks normal
Bloods done, heart checked, blood pressure checked. She’s had antibiotics, steroid creams, emollients to no effect.
Affects the left leg only.
Happy to pay privately but hospital Dr didn’t know which speciality to direct us to. I asked about a dermatologist but he said no I don’t think it’s the skin, but you could try it.
Image will take time to load. Help!

Are all the foot pulses present? Back of the ankle and on the foot? Skin goes white when pressed and immediately returns pink?

I don’t know, about the pulses I’ll have to try this tomorrow. The leg is so hard I’m not sure I’ll feel a pulse but I’ll try.
The skin is discoloured and almost purple black and hard in areas I’ve massages the foot/leg and would say no it doesn’t go back pink. It remains purple, black, rock hard and hot to touch.

Cellulitis?

toomuchfaff · 01/10/2025 20:34

If they have been to GP twice id be massively surprised if they haven't checked pulses (and they are fine), because if they werent you'd have been referred to vascular.

Title is click bait. Would have been better to call it ‘help with identifying this medical condition in older person’

We were referred to DVT clinic ? Is that vascular? She’s had a scan of the leg to look for a clot. I didn’t see them hold /touch the foot to be honest, they don’t seem interested in anything apart from clot detection. They’ve booked her for another scan but said they think it’s unlikely to be a clot.

Cellulitis?

Hospital said no they don’t think so.

It could be vasculitis where the blood vessels are swelling. My sister required 6 weeks of steroids to get it to settle. Doctor thought it was a reaction to an antidepressant.

Not heard of this, off to google.

Sounds like she needs to go to vascular….
No fever or weight loss though.

It was meant to be. I wouldn’t have posted in aibu but it gets more responses than other topics unfortunately.

Can you not put a warning that you will be showing photos of a medical condition on the internet?

nomas · 02/10/2025 11:37

Poor OP, sorry you're going through this. No advice but I would keep going to A+E or a clinic or GP until they take it seriously.

You could have just asked MNHQ to do that in the time you posted to OP.

She could have done this herself?

You're the one who wants the trigger warning!

It's too late now, I have already seen the photo! OP should be doing it if she is planning on posting photos like this in places where people are not expecting to see them.

Is the skin/flesh a reddy brown colour, hard to the touch and painful? Is the surface different in texture? Leg and foot swelling? It looks like it could possibly be venous insufficiency. They need a doppler ultrasound. Their practice nurse should be able to do this. If it is, it is helped with prescription compression hose and elevation. My elderly parent has it.

Yes it is- thank you. I’ll ask in the morning.

@nomas thank you, it’s not me it’s my DM and she’s getting really depressed due to the pain it’s causing. She has a high pain threshold so I know it must be bad.

@LoveWine123 Be thankful it isn’t your medical condition. Posted out of sheer desperation. Ask MN to put a warning on if it offends you.

It’s the bottom of a leg , bit red and swollen , not exactly a limb hanging off.
