To think live in the moment and live everyday as if it’s your last, is quite a bit of nonsense

I mean I do get aspects of it
like let’s stop worry about the past we can’t do anything. About it

let’s try to stop worrying about the future as it can stop you enjoy the present

but it just just really feel that realistic
as people still gotta earn money etc

What you do in the present can affect your future. By all means, try not to be too anxious, but you throw the baby out with the bathwater when you take it too far.

I think it is more about trying to build an enjoyable life day to day, rather than deferring enjoyment to some future day when things will be perfect.

So, yes, save for retirement. But also, take steps towards a job you enjoy, so you are not counting down the days. Buy the nice dress/join the sport team now, don't wait until you have lost two stone. Don't wait until the kids are the perfect age to book the holiday, as by the time you book it, they might not be as excited any more. That sort of thing.

I agree with pp. it’s about enjoying every day and not waiting for big events. My grandfather died a couple of months ago and one of the last things we talked about was the importance of not putting things off. You always think you have more time but that’s not true.

Mysticguru · 01/10/2025 18:19

You actually do live in the present moment. Things are happening to you now and you're making decisions at the moment.

The past and future are just in the mind. So thoughts about the past and the future are being thought about at this moment in time.

On a practical level we need to organise ourselves for things like appointments and time management but once organised they should be forgotten about until we need to be in that moment in time.

I found it quite useful for when I was being treated for anxiety. Not the live everyday like it’s your last, but being able to stop being plagued by compulsive thoughts and just to be able to do something like enjoy how my toes feel in the rug pile. It did make me happier tbh.

My uncle did this and got his electricity cut off 67 times for non-payment Grin

i kind of go by this mantra. My mum and brother didn’t get anywhere near retirement, and my dad was a month off when he died. I am 53 and have already outlived my mum and brother. I am very conscious that my family does not do longevity well. While I’m not flying around on rollercoasters or learning to play the trombone every chance I get, 1) I do not do unpaid overtime at work, and 2) I do not waste time doing things that are banal and I can get away with not doing. If bailing out of a party that I’m not arsed about means I can read a book that I want to read then I’ll do it. I’m not busy all the time but neither do I waste time, because in my family time is very precious.

I agree @BellRock1234. None of us know what’s around the corner so we should take opportunities when they present themselves-that doesn’t mean chuck in your job and stop paying your bills, it’s more doing things that you enjoy and making near-term, as well as long-term plans.

i realized the importance of this when I had an accident last year. Suddenly, I couldn’t walk without crutches/a scooter for several months and it really made me appreciate my usual mobility. Do things while you can!

It’s a combination of what is being said here. Find ways to make your everyday life fun, but also don’t assume that you can indefinitely postpone your big wishes. The latter can go for anything, but the first thing that goes to mind is dream travel destinations.
